New naval rank grind meta working as intended?

A challenge to what though? Your patience? Sanity?
There is nothing challenging or satisfying about doing the same rote, simplistic task over and over just to fill a progress bar.

Yes. I think that's what I said. If I'd been intercepted on each run, or I'd been forced to take an assassination mission, or covert scanning, or anything else it would have mixed it up.

I acknowledge it's my own fault. However not being particularly combat orientated nor wealthy, being able to stack 20 missions each at 133k credits just seemed like a good way of giving myself some capital. Ranking up at the same time felt like a bonus. It doesn't really feel like a bonus now. I can take these other missions still, but in terms of being a King of the Empire, ppsshh. Im not even worth being a king of ngurii.

👏👏👏

This, 100%. If the path to the cutter and corvette was actually engaging and fun to play then I’d be arguing that it should remain a challenge, but after grinding through both I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else. The progression was mind-numbingly boring, and required nothing but patience. I’m glad they lowered the bar.

Holy crap is this real? After playing since dec'14, losing all hope after 2.0(?) grind change, I can finally get access to a cutter?
Now where'd I leave my Courier?

Its a shame the ranks mean nothing other than to dictate what ships you can and cant buy as well.

Being rear admiral of king only means you can buy a cutter or a corvette, nothing else. No other privilages which is a missed oppurtunity imo. Maybe special missions from the systems that you earn the permits for during ranking up. Anything at all really

Wish I could rep you multiple times for this post. This community is so toxic. Constantly trying to dictate how others play this game. Screaming for nerfs. Screaming for PvP to be removed, etc etc. They might as well be chanting "MORE GRIND, LESS PAY! MORE GRIND LESS PAY"

I'm giggling cos all I can think of now is:

"No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!"

Why do I have to be 20?

I found it mind numbing doing those stacked return data missions ad nauseam .... all credit whoever can now grind rank in a short time that way (because the rep for missions has increased), but under the old system it was not for me after reaching a couple of ranks below Duke.

I am Duke now, have been since just before 3.0, but I still don't have a Cutter  From the pictures that are posted, the Cutter looks a fine ship to head out into the galaxy and explore .... the color schemes available for it now are fabulous !

And that brings me to another issue (minor sidetrack) - why no similar love for the Clipper ? :(

Clipper would be a lot more loved if it fitted on a medium pad: price aside, it’s almost the empire’s equivalent of the Python but the large pad requirement cripples it.

sorry commander, deliver these 12 units of tea for freedom and democracy.

Actually, the majority of my rank missions for the Federation involved delivering Tobacco, Beer, Wine, and narcotics to areas where they were illegal. Apparently, each rank required me to supply the local "officers club" with desired contraband.

I honestly don't recall what I had to supply for the Imperial Rank missions. It might have been similar items; I just remember that they weren't illegal, so it wasn't as funny/memorable.

Here... you want it nerfed!?!?!?!?

FDev!!!! But.... the background sim!!!?!?!?! What about the background sim!!!?!??!111/11/1 FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!! THE BACKGROUND SIM!!!!

also

It's affecting power play!11/111111 POWER PLAY!!!!!!!

It will be nerfed shortly. Now you can get back to GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND for your rep and access to game content.

You're welcome

Having done it I realize that's a major game element "done" , forever, with no challenge or real pleasure 

What challenge? What pleasure? Rank grinding is so skull numbingly boring that, no matter how much I want a Corvette, I refuse to do it because it makes me want to quit the game. I refuse to play a game that is more boring that my actual job and rank grinding is WAY more boring than my job. It's absurd that FD and a few players think this kind of "gameplay" is how you retain players when it actually chases them away. Now that earning rank seems a bit more reasonable I might actually get that vette I've been wanting.

I personally did the Federal grind before the update, and I just gotta say I don't begrudge anyone having an easier time of it. I didn't find it too bad myself, and only took me a couple of weeks at most, but it's still somewhat unpleasant and unwelcome; I would not wish that grind on anyone. If you can do the grind much quicker now thanks to the new reward choice system, then good, have at it.

Frontier, please do not change it back - this was a terrible method of gating in the first place, and it's now being relieved. If you're going to make some changes to the rank grind, then make it into a proper gameplay mechanic with a proper naval career.

Slogans are supposed to be repetitive so you can chant them at demonstrations and get the crowd pumped. In my time (my lawn, etc) it was something like "hell no, we won't go!"

20+ years of Game Time service to make Admiral/Duke.....I'm game for that change....:D

It took me about 2 weeks to go from outsider to Duke. It doesn't bother me at all that someone can do it in a few hours now. It's almost like this new mission reward system is working as intended and working well.

took me lees than a week for the cutter, approx 8 hours actual gameplay, admittedly from barron using an exploit of stacking missions and going 50ls between two star systems, but it was certainly never weeks of works if you knew the ways,

Playing the game properly its a joke, an absolute joke to rank up even in 3.0

3.0 is just the same but the exploit of stacking missions suddenly got quicker

do i care? no

Cutters, Cutters for everyone darling

Wait so now stacking missions at all is an exploit? So now everyone just take 1 mission at a time? Lmao

Or do you mean you used board hopping to stack 20? Which isn't an exploit and FDev flat out said they don't agree with it, but they do not care at all.

Or did you choose to use a bugged passenger mechanic to achieve not only naval rank, but exploration rank too?

All I did was find a good pair of systems and played a flying thumb drive, and few deliveries too. Made about 100 mil, and 6 ranks in a few hours a day for about 4 or 5 days on the fed side. Very little board hopping involved, but since FDev has stated they do not care about it (cause they know their mission board is stupid), well nothing is being done wrong at all. But I also don't HAVE to get 20 missions every time either.

I have no real skin in this since I’ve long since made the ranks required for Cutter and Corvette. But the lie that was “just playing you’ll make cutter or corvette in no time!” was just that.

Now? True. Just playing, you’ll gain in a few months at most. Focus? A few days. Grind? Hours. Frontier is wrangling with the burgeoning understanding that stuff takes far far too long to progress anywhere - just playing; if people have to spend all session, hundreds of sessions just to unlock one high rank ship, and then again for the other, maybe that’s not ideal.

It’s required people focus, fixate and grind. And I doubt that was ever a logical expectation. Frontier will no doubt just be trying to find a balance. It might take a couple attempts to get there. But no-one can in good conscience really call this exploiting in the sense that people are breaking game mechanics to proceed. Exploit as in take advantage? Sure. But they aren’t the same thing.

I think, personally, Frontier is on the right track. Stuff like imperial/ federal navy ranks and such shouldn’t really be treated like end game thousand hour progression. There are far more enjoyable things that could and arguably should fill that role.

There is a very unhealthy reliance on thinks like naval progression being required to generate thousands and thousands of hours to keep bored commanders engaged. This is the wrong place for that focus IMHO. There’s this sense you’re only a true commander if you don’t grind, don’t stack missions, only fly cobra and spent 12 hours a day in game.

That isn’t healthy. Designing exclusively for that demographic, isn’t healthy. And it’s clear some of the mechanics we have, make fairly unrealistic assumptions about what people are actually doing.

This is, to my mind, Frontier trying to reset some focused grind back to being more just part of the game where people can progress in reasonably sane timeframes without having to drop everything and grind. I don’t believe that’s a bad thing to change.

The speed at which someone rises through the ranks, makes their credits, buys their ships... none of this concerns me, or should concern anyone else.

"Oh, but the BGS..." The Bulls..t Generation System? What about it? You mortified that Harmless Anaconda or Cutter is going to steal your favorite system away from you? Odds are the fellow flying it is lucky to get it out of the mail slot. Jump in your murdermobile and shoot him down. That's what you're there for isn't it?

"But they can outhaul me..." Aside from you have the same option to do the same thing they've done and get the same results just as fast... you've no one to blame but yourself for holding you back. And as above, shoot them down if you're that worried about it.

"But they play in solo..." Tough? Gather your friends and outhaul them right back. Don't have any friends? Do you have any cookies? Is Cookie Monster sad?

There's really nothing one person can do that one more can't undo.

But this only exposes one of the biggest failings of the BGS - it just won't stay in the BACKGROUND where it BELONGS.

And Navy Ranking handed out by little factions instead of Naval Forces? C'mon... Colonel of the Salvation Army?
