New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Lets summarise the forum atm, from both sides :

  • horizons planets were both great at times, and a bit crap at times TRUE
  • they looked good from space, but a bit rubbish from srv or more importantly human height at times TRUE
  • odyssey planets are currently both great and a bit crap at times TRUE
  • they look amazing from human height, but there are issues with repeating feature patterns visible from height and space TRUE
  • odyssey live is seemingly not producing some of the features we saw in earlier pre-release version, and atmospheres have been changed TRUE
  • odyssey also has other planet bugs (eg textures not loading) TRUE

Fair?

Here's where I am - Horizons had an unreal alienness to the landscapes, which was quite appealing but perhaps not realistic (and suited those looking for 'hooning' or other weirdness ;) )

What Odyssey has that Horizons didn't is the wow factor on (some) planets, the atmospheres landscapes textures and details. It's those amazing moments that have revitalised exploration and planets for me, and presumably others.

What is the solution?

That's up to fdev, presumably a regeneration of the galaxy in the months ahead to sort the problems and obvious bugs (I'd wager repeating textures is a bug) and satisfy everyone. The reality is there is no satisfying everyone. In fact when they regenerate the galaxy to fix the problems, the amazing planets we HAVE found will also disappear.

Again, there is no satisfying everyone.

Lets just hope that any future 'regeneration' actually enables us who enjoy the hoonin' stuff to still be able to do so. ;)

Flying as fast as you can, low as you can, hard as you can, around the most challenging terrain, FAOff.
It's why Odyssey is a significant disappointment in that regard, and the idea of it replacing Horizons virtually an existential threat to the activity.
It's like
expressing yourself in an extremally suicidal behavior
but hoping to avoid the suicide part.

Partly. It's also about pushing the flight performance of the fastest, most agile ships and yourself to the absolute limit. Enjoying the flight model at it's most extreme, and developing precision in the movement of your ship. And having a few beers with mates whilst you kill yourselves trying to get faster and lower, again and again ;)

Edit: or it was. Now it's just in life support until they switch it off.

Ok
Thank you both

Check the diferent reaction of the comunity.
now this is hell but in 2016 was a take like a joke.
I don't get what point you're trying to make with those pics and link. Here's what I get out of it though. Enough people hand-waved it away in 2016 that it was never "fixed" and remains an issue even with the release of a new planetary construction and distribution technology five years later. Keep going, you might succeed again. Oh, and it looks to me like the folks who "take it as a joke" were the hand-wavers.

I just described how I see it as a not participating commander.

BTW I just almost lost 25 pages of carto trying to fly my DBX in some WIDE canyon.
I know now that first hooning attempts while you are on exploring trip with unsold data are not a good idea :)
It could be argued that starting in an explorer DBX was less advisable than trying hoonin' for the first time with data. ;)
Still...clock's ticking, so I understand :D

I guess we are to far from our potential and ship limits to call it hooning ;)
Well, if you've never tried it before, then that is almost certainly true. As with anything, practice is required to develop the skills.
The ship limits thing is easily hit though in a DBX. It is very limited in terms of speed and agility. I fear we stray off topic though
