New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Patten in Horizons 2016

now this is hell but in 2016 was a take like a joke.
Interestingly 2016 is closer to the time when I thought I remembered seeing planets with grids of craters, although I'd forgotten that similar patterns were visible right at the surface. It seems almost to be a manifestation of the same issue, but with the craters either generated on the fly or picked from a larger pool of assets.

Subjectively, re-use of assets at ground level never really bothered me. The Horizons rocks and boulders are clearly hand-crafted but generally (aside from cases like the ones above) placed in such a way as to disguise this quite well; same with the early alien flora, fumaroles etc.

And for my preferred SRV playing style I tend to either hang around one small area, where there exposure to duplication is minimal, or to speed across the surface in which case I would either be concentrating too much on not hitting things, or would rapidly move into different terrain. (Apropos of nothing, I tend to notice repeating rock assets more when I'm flying over them with night vision on than when I'm driving over them in an SRV in daylight. Shadow and relative position do a lot of the work when it comes to disguising re-use).

The current Odyssey issue almost seems to be topologically similar to what was reported in 2016, but scaled up in terms of the tile sizes. And for me I think that might be the key. Repeated patters from SRV height or even low aerial flight are harder to spot, or easier to accept, whereas repeated chunks the size of terrestrial islands visible from orbit stick out like sore thumbs.

I notice too that the discussion was in a beta forum and there was mention of LOD and related issues, so maybe FD fixed it, or rendered it so rare as to not be an ongoing problem. Which might bode quite well for them doing the same in Odyssey, if the problem is similar enough.

I wonder if this is related to the grid pattern that's sometimes visible on the SRV scanner in Odyssey? I don't remember ever seeing that in Horizons.

Why is this thread still going? Everything that has needed to be said has been said. They even admitted to the tiling being an issue both through the issue tracker and the tech being broken (on some planets) on stream. There is really nothing left to discuss. This thread just needs to be locked.

Where?

Why though ? there are more issues in planet gen than just the already acknowledged repeating patterns, and the topic title is vague enough to encompass all the issues we have.

Any other issues were acknowledged in the stream that they know its broken. They know its broken. They know what's wrong. They know it needs a lot work. Making any further discussion pointless.

Which is one reason why it's currently buggy.
Odyssey's planetary tech is absolutely awesome in my opinion and does a lot of things I have never seen in any other game.
And needs some more attention to fix stuff. So what?
yes yes .... next level stuff

Here's my last vid as an illustration - enjoy :)
I did!

Your video inspired me to make exploring/planets survey a bit more "spicy".
So this is my new "exploring" ship:

ZjXsI5.jpg

And now I am checking planets I land on for locations that may be useful for fooling around, like on the video below.

Disclaimer:
I don't remember ever having flown a Courier before,
and
this is a new location and I had no idea what awaits me after each corner
and
I am not skilled enough pilot for my flying to be impressive

But I had my fun doing this anyway, so thanks again for inspiring me to

make exploring great (risk) again.

If FD manages to "stretch" those land patches 3-4 time vertically making canyons higher, such locations will be much more fitting for this task.

Good job giving it a go!
Not knowing what awaits is all part of the fun. I also had no idea where I was going. Never did 😂

You know you're hooning for real when you are 100% willing to lose the ship just to get faster and lower. Constantly push yourself and the ship harder 👍. Rebuys are insanely frequent. It's a great way to learn FAOFF too, which gives a real sense of freedom.
