New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Nice job on the video - keep up the good work . When people say they will fix it - it goes to show they have no idea that this is a design choice made a long time and "fixing it" means starting from scratch almost - that's why we don't hear anything.

That's why they won't change it, they'll make some fixes, but I doubt they'll redo the whole planetary tech.
The stellar forge died with Horizons. Rest in peace.

Shoutout to BlackMaze to give this design flaw that much attention.

I'll just put this here to support the cause as well

Pity. The longer they go without making changes, the less willing they will be to re-roll the dice on the terrain generation system.
My fear is actually the opposite, they start just casually doing it every major update, like No Man's Sky did, one of the things which finally killed that game for me, with no thought to all the features explorers keep adding to EDSM for others to visit.

I understand, but right now there are several core issues that make the planet very dry and repetitive. And for lots of explorers, like myself, it killed the joy of exploring. Even DW3 was cancelled because of the planet gen. Seeing the same crater over and over again isn't fun.
Now, maybe that crater was in horizon to, but I don't care. I never noticed in horizon, probably because it was better hidden.

The result is a succession of dreary planet who look absolutely the same from space.
The sooner they fix it and regenerate them, the faster we can move on and start exploring back.

I'd rather they took a bunch of time to go over the system and rework everything that needs fixing about it before another attempt at rebaking it all, so we get a solid result from this system that everyone finds acceptable going forwards.

I also want them to make it the best. But we are in a bad situation. The more we wait, the more some people will have found new "feature", and if they rebake the terrain, they'll be gone. Again.
On the other hand, if they don't rebake the terrain, some core issue might still be there afterward, and forever.

No matter what happen, some people are not going to like it, that's for sure.

Spending all my Ody Time so far exploring the whole handcrafted terrain chunks stuff sure gets depressing. Like my new triangle buddy, you can see this triangle shaped terrain here center left as well on the right just above the day/night line

I know, repeated terrain on a planet is nothing new, but when you start encountering it again on other planets in diffrent systems it really gets depressing

Keep in mind I only took those screenshots because I remembered encountering this triangle before. Triangle-chan follows me everywhere.

I'm always amazed at how much better elite looked in the past compared to the present, even for non landable worlds.
Seriously? I mean, did you have a look at the Odyssey screenshot thread? I think many planets really do look amazing, especially from space.

I don't want to downplay the issue with repeatable patterns, artificial looking mountains and canyon edges, resolution, framerate etc., but I find it quite surprising how some people can only see the negatives and can't admit that there are also beautiful aspects about Odyssey...

Both these threads focus on screenshots, the one showing some AMAZING stills, the other showing some concerning issues. For me personally, however, it's not the stills but rather the motion that kills my enthusiasm for Odyssey. Watching mountains inflate like balloons as you fly over them, geological features popping into and out of existence, shadows dancing around, all at horrible framerates - that's a game-breaker for me. I'd much rather have Horizon's less beautiful stills but more fluid motion.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
