New Station in Pleiades..... is a Pirate Hub ??!??

This far from civilization, I'd be surprised if it is not a pirate hub.

That far from civilisation who are the pirates going to rob? There's a reason Bluebeard didn't hang out at the South Pole.

On the other hand, it makes sense for it to be an anarchy, in the sense of everybody is too busy trying to get stuff done to run around politicking.

When FD gives a player faction control of a system, that comes with a nice 60% influence boost which entrenches them there.

But what does 'control' mean? If I as a representative of a player group go to FDev and say "Okay, we've got a player group called 'Interstellar Rescue' and we operate out of the Thunderbird system and we compete with the fuel rats, and all our colour schemes are in strong shades of primary colours (yellow adders, green asps/dropshops, red orcas/fdls)", and FDev says "cool, we made you a player faction", then AFAIK I can't even actually 'join' 'my' own faction. That factions police will still hassle me, and their privateers will still try to shake me down.

I can try to increase that factions influence, but only as a vanity project, there's no real "control" involved, and anybody could come along and fifth column the minor faction.

A community effort to flip the system to the Nebula Goat Society would be hilarious.

Agreed.

current mechanics are a slow moving game of minor faction nudgying thats the end game but 95% of the strategic game is inactive or broken

LOL. BGS doesn't work, people complain. BGS works, people complain.

Ok, as I understand this, this is how it went.

A number of player groups came together to make the CG happen. The CGs were a success. As all systems have 5 factions, FD needed to add some factions. They could have called them anything, but instead decided to reward those who participated by naming the factions after them, separate from any existing player groups. Simply a nod to the more active players/groups that made it happen.

After this, what would appear has happened is a group or groups moved into the area and worked the BGS to get a faction named after a pirate group into the highest ranking position.

So, i don't see what FD have done wrong here.

Alas we have to work with how the world is, as always is/.

So when things get hairy with aliens or malfunctions or a swarm of barnacles, we have our guinea pig test subjects ready to be observed without responsibility for their protection, just sayin. :)
If they thought it was a safe haven from the bubble i think they'll find they are in the frying pan with only the fire to enter. take notes and lets see how things develop. :D#

I don't think you understand then... The player groups did not move in and work the BGS to get control of the system. The groups that were there when the system opened for business were hard coded in there.

The controlling faction, "The Ant Hill Mob", is unfettered, making them a pirate group and the system is anarchy.

People complaining that it was given to a player group do not have a valid complaint.

People complaining that a station that was the focus of multiple CG's ended up with an unfettered control faction in charge of the station in an anarchy are a different story. The station wasn't built as the result of the Background Simulator calculating that the Maia system was ripe for colonization and it picked a bunch of random names/factions to fill the five slots. It was hand placed by the devs after long series of community goals to build a new research station. Speaking as someone who participated in every phase of the CGs and was very much looking forward to seeing a large scientific outpost of some kind. Since the CGs and the station itself were the result of Dev intervention, I was expecting to see a controlling faction that reflected that, possibly under Alliance or Federation control since that's who controlled Kaushpoos for the CG's, or at the very least the corporation which made it happen. I was expecting to see system security ships zooming around and patrolling the system, in order to attract explorers and long distance traders because that would make SENSE.

I was hoping to take part in a little bit of Elite: Dangerous history.

Everything about Obsidian Orbital was created by hand by the dev team - except for the factions. They should have taken the extra steps to fill in the blanks to make it unique, logical within the ED universe and give people a reason to go there.

We were told all of our efforts were going to build a science outpost at Maia. Instead we got a biker bar.

And that's the complaint. A station that should have been something unique was slapped in without any sense of purpose or consideration of why people wanted to see it done in the first place. I can't speak for anybody else, but had I known that ahead of time, I might not have bothered with the whole affair except to make a few quick credits, which is all CG's seem to boil down to anymore.

Surely the controlling faction should be the Explorer's Association group. Not randomly generated minor factions.

I understand what you are saying, but I still must disagree with your conclusion.

So, are you saying, FD should not have included a pirate faction (or anarchy to be precise) at that station? Because it seems like a great place to have an anarchy faction.

Are you saying that in this case the BGS should not have been allowed to work correctly?

I'm not 100% sure exactly what your complaint is.
