I bought the game on a whim to distract myself from a bad back; and speaking of backs I was taken aback to find that I'd need a player name. For some reason the name of the Arabic philosopher and astronomer Averroes popped into my mind. Unfortunately it had already popped into someone else's.
Since I arrived at the name after someone else, in my ignorance I opted to stick 'meta' (Gr. 'after') in front of 'Averroes', not realising that in gaming terms I would then be claiming to be an Averroes in possession of the Most Effective Tactic Available. (On the rare occasions I've been in Open - not since they stopped board-flipping - I've seen players I've hailed reply politely then edge away from the clearly boastful ganker.)
I wasn't happy, to put it mildly, with the name, and always intended to put in a ticket to have it changed; so when I joined the forum I used an old bulletin board tag, dagwit, rather than be known by a player name I would soon no longer use.
But I found that while I had no attachment to the name, I was soon inseparably welded to being "Mike, Echo, Tango". Coming up with another name that started with these three letters proved tricky; I did eventually arrive at 'Meteoric Irony' but never quite got round to asking for the change.
Which is why I still have one of the clumsiest CMDR names in Elite Dangerous, but thankfully one with which I only occasionally burden the forum.
