No Guns

You could build a decent Asp Explorer with 2 afmu's so they can repair each other, and head out into the void with no weapons. You'd probably be able to get to Elite in one exploring trip if you stay out there long enough. Good luck! I've seen many commanders doing really long hauls and it's a completely different game than the gameplay you can find in and around the bubble.

You can do that with a Sidewinder. Just farm the neutron stars. About 1500 neutron stars later you will be Elite in exploration. And who needs AFMUs for exploration?

It's not only possible, it's a sensible strategy when out trading. But I don't know if I'd want to start out that way in a Sidewinder; shooting Bad People is probably the easiest way to a bigger ship at first.

Used to be the case and I had to BH my way to the Cobra using the Freagle but seeing the payout of boom/expansion/outbreak data deliveries these days, I suspect guns are more of a deadweight than anything even from the start.

Entirely possible! Probably sensible...
I didn't fit any guns when I started out until I had an A-Rated Cobra. Only my multi-role and combat ships do. My long range mission runners never have guns fitted (makes a huge difference to an iCourier's weight).

Million credits in a Sidey? I had more than that when I got my Adder!.. Entirely possible with guns too.

(I've never got a new ship until I can A-rate the new one with at least ten re-buys in the pot...)

So here's a question. Is it possible to play Elite Dangerous...

:O

...without a weapons loadout!!!

Well a fully kitted out trade ship should have no weapons.

A) you don't really have the agility to lock onto anyone

B) The extra weight restricts your jump range.

I have never had any weapons or shield on any of my cargo vessels, it all wastes cargo space/jump range.

my 2c :)

I currently run with guns on my Asp, but I think I'm going to remove them. I keep wanting to fight when I really should be running. :)

I've made some real bad choices (several times in a row ) when I've been playing tired.

Here's a challenge: Make 1 million credits in a Sidewinder with no weapons.

I did this. On my CMDR reset I chose the Sidewinder with SRV, and did loads of surface salvage missions and POI hunting. Not too tough really, as the POI were sometimes good for 7 or 8 tons of gold. The Sidewinder could carry 4 tons IIRC, so about 40k per haul without a mission.

Absolutely. You shouldn't ever fight in a pure trade ship. Either you are a sitting duck or you must compromise your cargo capacity which means additional runs and increased risk or piracy.

Definitely. I have an asp-ex with no guns. I advise armoring up though and increasing speed stats as much as possible. If worse comes to worse and you can't run, turn your ship into an over armored projectile lol

I have not had a weapon mounted on any of my ships for months.

Combat can be fine and fun but this forums fixation on it is strange. ED has a lot more then that going on.

This .... ^^^^^^

It's almost feels as if you're not doing it right if you don't have a C3 Beam to fry someone with...

I will answer this pointing to my experience live in front of 700 people on the beta stream last week:

tl: dr Forgot I had powerplay active, was in a fuel rat loadout with 4D shields. Died fairly quickly and comprehensively despite a valiant attempt by my wingman.
Swapped to combat courier, played chicken with the station, got killed by station. Died.

I died more than Ed on a livestream, for shame! :p

Anyways, the answer is yes it's possible but not advisable.
