No Guns

I fly without weapons or shields in my Asp....I mine and trade just fine. *shrugs* Most don't have the stomach to fly without shields or weapons...being a carebear is tough stuff!

So here's a question. Is it possible to play Elite Dangerous...

:O

...without a weapons loadout!!!

yes easy,

I reset my save then flew to Jacques in a Sidewinder and am now exploring in a Adder with no guns and my rank is 0% harmless on the low end and a Pathfinder on the high end, I have never had a "gun" equipped.

BTW my Sidewinder and Adder are Yellow.... :p

My ships which currently have no weapons equipped:

Smuggling Asp
Smuggling Cobra Mk3
Exploration Asp
Exploration Anaconda
Cobra Mk4 surface salvage and S&R ship
Type 9

and until two days ago

Mission running Python

I only put guns on the Python so that I could take any combat missions that pop up whilst looking for engineer stuff, in fact as soon as I've got Qwent his modular terminals they will probably be coming off again. If I want to do a massacre or assassination mission I'll use a combat focused ship like my FDL, the Python can do literally anything else without needing to fire a shot.

I don't have guns on my exploration ships partly for the obvious reason (range) and partly due to the little bit of understated internal roleplaying I indulge in - for all my joking about wanting Thargoid skin seat covers in my Vulture, I don't actually feel that an exploration ship should be packing cannons. I'm not really feeling the whole 'we come in peace, shooot to kill' thing. Of course whether that situation continues will depend largely on what FD do with any alien races - if we hit a point where vicious green beasties are trying to murder me every time I jump further out than Barnard's Loop I'll reconsider my policy.

As for the smugglers, I don't want to shoot things when I have a hold full of narcotics, slaves or whatever, all my smuggling relies on speed and stealth. If I end up in a situation where I need to shoot something, I've already done at least three things wrong.

For the longest time I only had a mining beam installed since that's all that was allowed on a T-6. And your limpets took the other hardpoint. Was having fun beating the interdiction game, or just avoiding them altogether while coming back from making a measly couple of thousand credits in an hour of mining before boredom hit. Then that all changed after a long break from the game, I come back in to get blown up in a few secs by an NPC while carrying no cargo. The interdiction game was broken, you couldn't win even keeping the target dead center. Then they nerfed your ability to escape. It all seemed like some form of terrorist developer tactic to      their players off. Which FD did for many. After that mass exodus of ED players left, they have repaired much of their stupidity. So I do believe you probably can travel without the need of a loadout, but with the RNG it's only a matter of time before you get rolled by an NPC. It has nothing to do with your ability, but all resides in the RNG when you should die next. Think my time is up again. I'll load in later to find out.

Luxury version: Anaconda. You can always run, and in case you can't, no guns would have helped (except maybe Thargoidish stuff).

FuelRat Asp: I equipped my Rasp with mines, rails and other stuff. Saw the loss of a couple of lys jump distance. Discarded all weaponry. Ratting happily unarmed ever since.

Generally, fighting in a jump-optimized ship is not the brightest of all ideas. I actually love that kind of specializations with upsides and downsides in Elite.

And I also do combat, in combat or multipurpose builds. And you earn a certain flexibility concerning missions of course. Required otherwise? No.

Since that first one was just so easy (gotta start with the easy ones), here's another challenge: Earn 1 million credits in combat bonds using only the T-9.

Yeah, it's possible, but it gets boring after awhile.

All I used to do was mine and haul freight.

Then I wandered into a high intensity CZ, and my life changed forever.

There are levels of difficulty between 'make apple pie' and 'create the universe,' you know :D

There's a certain CMDR on these forums who has been known to fly a T-9 in combat situations with a great deal of finesse. I won't name any names as to who he might be, but here's a clue: "American woman, stay away from me / American woman, mama let me be / Don't come hanging around my door / I don't want to see your face no more"

Yes completely. I played a pacifist role for my first year in the game and progessed very well. I do combat now from time to time when I'm in the mood and have master rank. But my entire fleet apart from my FAS is unarmed. I am currently back from Jaques and running around the bubble catching up with the latest CGs and engineers relying entirely on my ability to run away and with conplete confidence...
