No Man's Sky recent success is good sign for Elite and future Space games/sims

I've just bought NMS on steam - 50% discount sale

Watched a few gameplay vids and looked at some reviews since NEXT came out, seems like a good time to try it out.

I nearly bought it at launch and I'm glad I didn't. I wouldn't pay full price for it so £20 seems about right. Looking forward to it and will probably put take a break from ED for now and return once 3.2 or 3.3 come out.

You people should not compare games themselves but how both of them evolved/expanded/developed. The problem is NMS was crappy, but was patched/expanded/developed to the point of being good (people are much much happier with the game now). ED? Ed was ok-ish at the start and... it's basically the same 4 years later. Development of NMS looks like going forward and devlopement of ED looks like 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards all the time (some good but most of the time small additions/fixes but also some things noone really wanted... and in the meantime some aspects of the game keep looking like placeholders after 4 years of updates). I as (not active now but still...) ED player envy the NMS players how their game evolved.

It is.

But you don't lead a spaceship in that way and so it isn't a simulation. :)

I played MS Flight Simulator 97 with Keyboard and Mouse.

Simulation ? Do you know what simulation means ? ED is a space game, yes. Simulation, no.

And yet space-sim is the correct genre term for games like Elite Dangerous.

PS
And I don't really care if you agree with it or not, since Wikipedia, all gaming media and basically the whole world disagrees with you.

I was hesitant at first, I'm a real ED fan, but I'm glad I bought NMS.
When you're into this kinda game then it's truly very good with tons of stuff to do, obtain or explore.
Play in normal mode though, survival is very hard.
I'm not comparing it to ED anymore, they're to different but Fdev could learn a thing or two regarding a balanced effort vs reward system.
Oh and spacelegs!!!

I still love Elite Verm. I just don't get why people (not you) react to criticism of ED as if their grandmother has been run over by a car. [haha]

I think it’s just another day on these forums though some the salt is a bit ott...I know I have a sharp tongue too sometimes, but right or wrong I still love elite too...I’m just on a break and here’s how I reason it...

As fun as nms is, I can only envisage my playtime in the hundreds of hours before I’d want more, or fd raises eyebrows of their own inside 2018.

I count my time in elite in thousands of hours...almost 5k hours spread over two accounts.

So I think it’s fair to assume I’m not done with elite just yet. Fer all its perceived faults and bugs, it is still elite and it is still the top dog in the genre imo and I’m just playing a distraction instead of crying rivers of tears in this soap opera forum fer the next 5 months or so.

In saying that, it would be cool if at least some helpful feedback can be garnered from this mega thread of salt...both games can learn from each other in the long run and may well do over time.

But salt? Just another day at the office m’dears...doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers others ^

Different games, different development scopes.

Do not expect overpassing 'do everything' type of MMO, not gonna happen. ED is closest thing and remains of closest thing you can have in genre.

Instancing? Cost of doing networking.

Also it is not success per se. NMS got hyped beyond hope to ever cash in that cheque, now they got on level where they gan start to regain trust. I checked NEXT videos, still very.....crafty grindy game. Still Minecraft in space. Not my bag.

Hahah this post is funny because i've literally just revisited the forum after like....5 months to see whats new and you are still the biggest fanboy going with your overly defensive responses :D.

OP: Been playing the new NMS and all i can think is, if NMS and ED had a baby it would be glorious.

Hell if NMS stole EDs flight model it would be a total keeper!

ED; you can be the first to explore a rock, you cant name it or anything.

NMS: You can name the system, the planet, each individual plant and lifeform on it; its basically ED with depth in many regards.

Watch this space i guess.

Space simulation maybe, let's say yes!
Space flight simulator NO.....not even close!
Even with FA off there is still space drag affecting ships and free floating objects.
Damage model is not 1% realistic, it's simple health bar!
But galaxy size and it's representation is very good simulation.

Damage model is quite detailed. It is however represented as percentage for players because usability.

ED is a game which uses quite detailed simulations to provide gameplay.

The flight model is actually pretty realistic when you forget about the magic slow down. AFAIK the game takes physics into account when it comes to mass, acceleration and gravity. The damage model is also quite sophisticated, I believe every shot gets calculated as a vector on its own, which takes hull penetration and resulting module damage into account while different weapon types have varying penetration values. This gets affected by various resistance types. This again can result in various module malfunctions. No, the damage model is not just a simple health bar. IIRC there was a detailed dev post about it.

Elite is a space pilot simulator and NMS is a space adventure game.

I like both. Been playing NMS more lately.

What turns me off in Elite is the "dead time" like

- super cruising distances
- exsessive time just "piloting" your ship when nothing else is happening like planet approaches, station landings, USS grinding.
- Too much waiting time i.e reaching SC height, countdowns etc. All these small things add up to frustration

NMS is more streamlined, planet approaches are much quicker as are landings etc...
There is more action.
However much more fiction and fantasy than elite.

NMS is a game to be ejoyed visually and audibly with incredible Music and sights.

I wish Elite was a bit more stream lined. And had a better system for getting mats instead of the USS placeholder.

Now, if only NMS had VR :)

Ditto, and as I said elsewhere, I play and enjoy both and feel that on almost no levels are they truly comparable, or in competition. When I want to fly a spaceship I play ED, when I want to explore strange new fantasy worlds I play NMS. ED is science 'faiction', whereas NMS is science fantasy.

The only thing missing from NMS are the voluptuous green skinned women as promised to me by Star Trek. I'd also moan about the lack of jet boots, but NMS already has these. Brilliant! However there's still no sight of hula-girl bobbleheads in either game.

Ohmygod! You can name things? That is the pinnacle of gameplay. I'm already moist.

I name this plant Ferdinant. I are having fun.

I just named my couch Archibald. I don't need games!

Nice to be recognized I guess :)

If naming something is a depth, that's some shallow waters I am afraid.

Then the same is to say about first discoveries in ED yes?

I don't get this ED vs NMS bashing and vice versa, they're both good games and quite different.
It's all about personal preference.
Right now NMS is what I prefer, not because ED isn't good but because I'm getting bored playing it after 2000 hours and NMS offers a lot of gameplay with a well balanced effort vs reward system.
Once, when or if Fdev get they're act together and add some more engaging gameplay then I'm definitely back in.
