No Man's Sky vs Elite Dangerous

So, I finally started playing NMS, which I've owned for almost a year. Have to say, I'm really enjoying it.

However, I don't get why people compare these two games. They are so different, it feels like they're not even in the same genre.

What are the cool things NMS has that ED doesn't:

  • A handful of alien races with which one can communicate
  • Atmospheric landings and lots to do on planets
  • Lots of ship upgrades, suit upgrades, etc.
  • Teleportation

What are the cool things that ED has that NMS doesn't:
  • Realism
  • Stunning graphics
  • Actual flight model
  • Actual space combat
  • Actual exploration
  • Actual galaxy map
  • Things look real

Let's say space legs are coming... keep in mind, they have NOT been promised on any kind of timeline of which I'm aware. However, let's say they are. Here are the things I hope ED adopts from NMS:
  • Exosuit with lots of stuff on it
  • Base building
  • Teleportation
  • Weather effects - toxicity, hostility, etc.

Here's the stuff I hope they DON'T implement:
  • Every single space port in NMS looks exactly the same. They are literally impossible to tell apart from the inside
  • Resource gathering is tedious
  • Language learning... this is SUPER tedious
  • Buried data/artifacts... maybe this is okay, but depends on implementation

Anyway, I thought I'd throw my thoughts into the mix. NMS is fun, but it is vastly different from ED. The procedurally generated worlds and lifeforms are pretty cool, but they're also very repetitive. Graphics are poor compared to ED, but the galaxy does seem more interesting because of all of the life. Then again, back in the real galaxy, the odds of finding intelligent life are pretty much non-existent, so I think this is a throwback to more realism.

Of the two, I currently enjoy NMS more, but only because it's a change of pace. The horribad flight model makes me want to stay out of my spaceship. I mean, it's really, really bad.

Once my VIRPIL throttle arrives in a few days, I'm sure I"ll be back in the good ol' Milky Way (instead of wherever the hell I am now).

have you played either game in vr? from your signature you've got the pc to run it maxed out.

anyway if Elite gets legs I'd be into it. but I'd hope it brings gameplay worth the effort to build out these gargantuan ships and stations.

The biggest warning sign NMS has is to atmospheric planets. Using the tools, one can easily swap out the setting to elite, and...... i can't imagine them being not exactly the same as non atmosphered planets. Having developed cloud layers in gas giants i think would be a far more valuable option to elite. Also making assumptions about life would be.. well.. i guess they could keep going with the current sci fi flavour nevermind. I've read a book by ian m banks and that stuff would fit too i think.

The biggest way no mans sky puts frontier developments in the rubbish bin is to show how an identical "say nothing" developer manages to communicate with the community and work with expectations to generate good will rather than frontier who just wee wee everyone off.

Frontier leave a string of broken hearted internet girlfriends and hello games roll in jumping castles of love. And they're not even milking it.

I enjoy reading the NMS Steam Updates far more than playing the game.

Ooooh, a new update, that sounds good, I'll just reinstall it for the umpteenth time and ... yeah, this is okay I suppose ... but it's still not a space game. Uninstalls.

I was under the impression NMS goes radio silent on a regular basis, then reappear once they release a new update? That sounds familiar.

I bought NMS as a giant F U to FD, then I promptly bought Outer Worlds as an F U to FD and I ended up playing TOW instead. Then I was about to try NMS but ended up buying Imerator Rome as a little gift to myself. I'm learning Imperator Rome now.

In answer to your question I prefer ED to NMS.

Seconded. I've played NMS enough to build a base, buy a star destroyer, top out most of the milestones, S-rate all my fighters, and... more I guess; it barely registers in my memory. NMS? 300 hours. Elite? 1200 hours and still counting.

NMS is a dalliance while I mainline ED.

No Man's Sky is an appropriately ironic title for a game that is, at its core, a planetary crafting survival game with a coat of science fiction paint. I have played it and, well, I don't any more. It occupies the same space as Space Engineers, Astroneer and Planet Explorers for me. Not to say those games are bad, but they're not in the lineup for me. I mean, the best NMS innovations to date have been the terrain manipulator, the bases and ByteBeat. It is not a flight simulator. Or any simulator. It's a procedural crafting adventure game.

I like No Man's Sky. And obviously I like Elite.
Thing is, that those two games are completely different.
NMS is not a space game. It's a sandbox building and exploration game in a fantasy world that is space-themed. And it's good at that.
Comparing thiose two is like comparing Doom with a tactical military shooter. It's not the same genre apart from the fact they both are FPS games and both have guns.

That starts with graphics, detail and authenticity. I wouldn't want to see the atmospheric landings of NMS in Elite. That would be like Unicorns in Arma. And I'm not even touching gameplay here.
Same goes for scientific detail, flight model (there isn't really a flight model in NMS...) and actually everything else.

You completely forgot what really happened.

Guess you don't count you know, the entire NMS release debacle, the many many many straight up lies Sean Murray told about the game - from the biggest - Multiplayer wasn't part of the game even (yet he claimed on multiple interviews it did), to things like worlds and life being greatly downgraded from the initial E3 showings. And I mean they didn't plan on having it at all, it wasn't going to be added later, he straight up lied and said it was in the game, you could play WITH your friends, etc. Lied. They also didn't say a WORD for MONTHS after the B.S. release. People literally thought they were taking the money and running and I recall even people on Reddit going to the office and posting pictures of an empty dev house during the work week (the staff must have taken a LOONG vacation after release with all the cash they fleeced from people). Their twitter account stopped and they blocked people from asking question on their website.

The game release was talked about as if it was a $60 AAA title - in reality it was a $20 B title. But they fleeced so MANY people and got their $60 off the initial rip off, they managed to stay in business BECAUSE they are so small and then decided they better build the game they promised. Took them 3 years and people act like they are the best dev company in the world. Nope, the only reason it was added was they had the money and decided they better deliver what they were supposed to. Oh, that and they don't have a single other title to make any money on. They are a one hit wonder and have to milk NMS as long as possible.

Yes but unlike frontier who still have twisted the facts and remain silent on everything, close down features and still enjoying boasting about how they listen to the community.. how twisted.. hello games have since corrected their course.

It’s a cruel world if you are still doomed after making right.. sure on what was horrible direct and blatant lieing to make preorder sales.

If frontier become normal again I’ll forgive them too.

I really liked NMS at first but it got boring real fast.
And flying on it is cringe.
Elite is a much more classy game, if legs is like nms it will not make elite a better game.

What you say is true, and considering how Hello Games could turn the initial rage in the the present love somehow they mastered the situation. The trick here are the facts not the words.
Hello Games released a game in 2016 and 3 years later this game is 10 times bigger than the initial one. We can't say ED had the same fate. After one year from the release FDEV started working on other projects and left ED grounded in the corner for whatever reason. All other Frontier games did not have the delays that ED had and is still having.

Do ED vs R-Type next. Let's compare spaceship games!

Congrats on the Virpil, btw. Absolutely the pinnacle of control!

Fdev and Hello games communicate in the same way when it comes to updates/expansions. Fdev also do weekly play the game sessions with the community managers, I don't think Hello games do that.

To be fair I really don't get the angst about the communication. Seems okay to me and not much different to a lot of other companies.

I’ve played both.

ED is brilliant, primarily because it’s an in-cockpit experience, so controlling the game via HOTAS from a seated position is a natural fit. While it’s possible to walk around your cockpit to a degree via roomscale, it’s clearly an unintended side effect.

NMS, OTOH, was designed to be played from a seated position even when outside your ship, and I found trying to play it roomscale to be a frustrating experience. Doubly so trying to fly the ship “virtually”.

If the “new era” of ED is a Elite Feet, I hope they take full advantage of roomscale VR. AAA Games that I’ve played that take advantage of it, line Minecraft (Vivecraft) , Fallout 4, and Skyrim were a lot of fun. The gameplay felt natural, and movement in the game didn’t make me sick. Games that were designed to be played in seated VR, like Subnautica and NMS, I switched back to pancake mode, because the experience was simply not fun.

I just don't understand the intent of this thread. The OP states "..However, I don't get why people compare these two games. They are so different, it feels like they're not even in the same genre..." then proceeds to compare both games based on the same criteria!

Honestly, I couldn't care less if someone enjoys NMS, Star Citizen or Professional Candy Crush, I just can't understand why they think they need to jump on here to inform everyone of the fact.
