"No plans to port Elite Dangerous to PS5"

So it's actually quite jarring to see the improved graphics boost. You can tell the lower res count with the improved graphics in You can def see the lower count when zoomed in close.

But the lighting is definitely improved, the graphics have seen a boost and the frame rate is a smooth 60 at least... Not sure what it was on the pro but the game didn't feel this smooth.

If PS5 manages a steady framerate in busy CZs then that would at least be something, I guess. Still not sure I want to take the plunge yet, though.

Damn right, a nice smooth framerate especially in busy CZ is my main 'looking forward to' at the moment. I managed to get a pre-order in. 1 week to go! Mind you, I'll also be playing Demon's Souls.

I wouldn't bank on getting "current-gen" 4K resolution with Odyssey on the PS5.

They'd be crazy not to, but given the track record it's certainly not guaranteed...
I’d say given the track record it is guaranteed. The software runs at 4K on all other platforms, the actual reason it isn’t 4K now is because we’re running the PS4 version.

The only reason I say it isn't is because ...

a) Elite is running on the PS5 via the PS4 Pro version in backwards compatibility mode.
b) 4K would require either a native PS5 version, or a hybrid backwards compat version purely for PS5.
c) Frontier quite recently told us they have "no plans for PS5". Odyssey is targeted only for PS4.

... b and c appear to be directly at odds with each other.

You must be new. The XBox One X is more powerful than the PS4 Pro but that doesn't excuse not bringing a 4K mode to the PS4 Pro which is capable of 4K (even if it's checkerboard). The only reason that FDev didn't is because they couldn't be bothered.
Don't take it personally, they have a work load and do what they can with the staff they have. They want it to be as good as it possibly can be, but they have priorities. If the PlayStation player base was huge then I'm sure they'd focus on it, but the PS4 pro 4k must have had issues that they deemed too hard to work out. The game doesn't even run smoothly on PS pro when on performance settings if it's a busy area. Let's hope they really do something special for PS5 one day, it could be the best version if they put the time in with that controller too..

According to data, there are somewhere around 280k users on PSN who have earned at least one trophy. Let's say Odyssey is £25, that's potential revenue of £7million on Playstation. Maybe a similar userbase on XBox, and that's without selling to any new players.

Over simplifying it, but ignoring the consoles in this manner is short-sighted.

All hopes are pinned on updated and native 4K versions released with Odyssey, then.

You must have theory why they wouldn’t update it to 4K at some point then?
FD haven’t shown a reluctance towards 4K on other platforms and the PS5 is powerful enough.
You seem to be grasping for a bone of contention that isn’t really there.
Maybe you should be arguing the “when” angle rather than the “if”.

Not sure if you missed it, but a couple of months ago they said they have "no plans for PS5". Odyssey is targeted only for PS4 currently.

I hope they do update it, but the current information we have from Frontier suggests not.

They recently quoted 60 fps for the new consoles,so what constitutes “no plans” may indeed be a plan of sorts.
I think what they may have meant was that given the situation(retail versions have yet to be released, currently working on an update specifically for the PS4) they were unable to make promises they had no way of ensuring they could keep.
This was in the hands of the hardware developers and only time would/has shown.
