"No plans to port Elite Dangerous to PS5"

Elite Dangerous had cross play, but lost it when the macOS client was shut down.
Consoles were never part of that.
At the time macOS was shut down, if cross play did happen, it would only have been between PC and MAC.

Sony and Microsoft were being childish and refusing to share their shiny toys with each other.
It started in the previous, previous generation (Xbox 360, PS3) with Microsoft refusing to share. Last gen (Xbox One, PS4) had Sony tending to put the blockers on it.

It's all petty protectionism.

The few games that did manage to get cross play working (Fortnite???) showed that the world didn't end.

Sure... except that Odyssey is bringing completely new planetary generation. So the question is, will the galaxy be divided fundamentally between platforms or is the new system being brought to non-Odyssey owners?

I think that's an extremely valid question, and it needs to be addressed by FDev.

Given their track-record I expect non-PC players to get the finger, but what do I know...
The absence of any sort of noise towards the console base suggests that the general improvements that PC Horizons users will be getting as a result of the Odyssey changes wont be coming to consoles.

We are one three separate universes, linked only by the BGS.
The graphical changes are a layer above that connection and tailored to the respective platform.
It would be additional work, that would need to be developed, supported and regression tested whenever bug fixes were issued in the future.
For this reason, I very much doubt Frontier will change their current practice of a PC-only focus.

These days, you write the code once, and then subsequently build against particular platforms. So its highly likely that we`ll get PC odyssey (because there is only one codebase), with any relevant adaptations to allow it to work on consoles.

Having said all that, performance considerations might mean that the experience on (announced last gen) consoles is significantly cut down. But still, the console build will be derived from the same codebase as PC.

My PC accounts did a lot of traveling on my XB carrier.
We share the galaxy, but the servers responsible with the direct player interactions are separated

Odyssey should be a thing for PS5.

Would be?
Before EPIC account infusion, PS had the smallest player base.
After that, the percentages are even lower

So that number means kinda nothing

Did FDEV make public player numbers broken down by platform?

Guess that's why we'll never get a PS5 version then because there are so few players. Thanks for the insight. Explains the 'no plans'.

I mean, seriously, XB has 18 millions subscribers to Game Pass.
And ED is free on GamePass... at least for now.
Yet I dont see a flock of XB noobs storming the forums, nor FD announcing any plans for a XB Series version

But i do hope Consoles will get some love before the year's end.

So no official numbers by platforms. Thanks.

It probably doesn't interest most Gamepass users. I don't bother with half the free games on PS+. Only the ones which interest me. 🤷‍♂️

No, but i do remember some numbers were vehiculated on the forums like one year ago (maybe more?). Something like 15% (or under) of the player base were on consoles? No base was offered for that number and i cant find any links... so treat is as a vague memory

However @Artie could indulge us with some Inara percentages for PC/XB/PS numbers - sure that would be valid only for Inara registered commanders, but could still provide us an idea regarding console commanders that are interested enough in ED to create an Inara account (i'm one of them)
Please Artie? 🙏

EDIT:
What we do know is FD sold about 4 millions accounts (total - PC, Steam. XB, PS)
Epic free launch gave away another 8 million accounts (granted, the very vast majority are not played)
And not at last, ED has about 500,000 regular players (that log on at least once per month)

I knew all that already, I thought you had found some official information regarding the player base for each platform. But thanks anyway for the effort.

PS5 : 8 million potential ED players.

And again, you treat those 8 millions PS5 consoles as potential players - which is absolutely wrong.
They are at best potential paying customers.

While i just pointed out that XB game pass has 18 millions subscribers and Elite is free-to-play for those 18 millions XB subscribers
And we still dont see them suffocating the forums

So, the numbers of PS5 sold simply do not matter.

In terms of a real player base, not just numbers, it will count. It doesn't matter how many consoles Sony sold, or if the game is free or not on Gamepass, or that Epic free giveaway. So unless we will know exactly how this is broken down by numbers, we will never know whatever FDEV is planning, if or when.

What console are you playing the game on, by the way?

To be honest I am still confused by all the Xbox comparisons. This thread is ultimately about the lack of PS5 support and the PlayStation communities hope we get it with Elite. Not really concerned with Xbox tbh although I would hope both the XSX and PS5 would get Odyssey love at some point.

The more I see the more I worry for a BC version on PS5 hobbled by PS4.

I hope the consoles gets some love.
And a native version

I dont see it as PS is entitled to a native version and XB not, nor the other way around.
So yea, not only PS5 lacks support, Series X/S lacks support too..
