No Ship Interiors: - Oops!

No support for next Gen consoles...

What have they been doing these last few years?
Waiting for the consoles to come out so the can support them fully?

edit: in the interview I read they said they wanted to do a proper job when they do add support - which is maybe better than a 'well, it'll work the same as the PS4 forever'. Sounded more like they will do PS5 support than VR - IMHO

Seriously, apart from taking a leak into the kitchen sink perhaps, what engaging gameplay could possibly result from ship interiors being made available?

Taking NMS as an example, having to jog through the dull corridors of a freighter got old halfway through the first time I had to do it. The only thing that would be nice is a seamless transition from cockpit to ladder/lift/steps but that'd only really work on the smaller ships. How would you get off a Type-9 for example? Base jump?

immersion ?

Ship interiors might be a bit difficult due to our semi-magical ship holds.
You could fit an SVR or SLF module into any compartment where they would fit, yet they still launch from the same spot on your ship.
You can move modules around without caring anything about the layout of the ship.
So it might be a bit difficult to design the interior of our ships due to the modularity.
A work around might be that we could only walk around the cockpit area while the rest of the ship is off limits. But I think people would get ed if they couldn’t walk all through “their” ship.

immersion ?
How long would it take to get from the seat to the ground outside in say a Conda? Would you want to go on a 30 second (if not more) excursion of pressing forward on your control pad/stick etc. every time? I reckon most players would want to skip it after doing it a couple of times, so not sure if it's worth the dev time.

Edit - on second thought, ship piracy where you board an enemy ship, combined with corridor shooting mechanics would be one use case, but honestly I reckon the chance of this is close to 0%, looking at the level of depth of other mechanics implemented in the game thus far.

How many times would you be willing to walk from one end of a Cutter to the other for immersion?

I don't really care as I don't want space legs in the game. Adding atmospheric landings for non rocky planets and tying up all together the already existing activities would have been sufficient for me.

I understood from the initial release and the early beta's that the ships were designed with full internals. We will have to wait and see, however I will be disappointed if we can't walk around inside the ships. Perhaps Frontier will release additional content overtime, perhaps adding the ship internals later, like previous updates. Some early concepts showed the player making repairs on the ships internals. That would be great , especially in zero G.

This one surprised me, as I was expecting the exact opposite. I assumed all this new tech would be too much for the old consoles to handle, and that Frontier would make Odyssey PS5 / XB? only. The good news is that if old consoles can handle this new Odyssey tech, then my laptop definitely won't have a problem handling it!

Let's actually get it confirmed, but what gameplay would you have that would make you want to walk around your ship after the first time?
I'm not fussed about walking around my ship - but think of the possibilities if the ships were walkable. You could have USS with damaged ships that you could enter and salvage - there might be crew defending them - and you might be able to rescue / or attack said crew. You could have security systems to defeat in mini-games, use stealth to avoid NPCs, loot cargo or data. So much EVA gameplay (never mind walking on stations / megaships / FC etc). I guess maybe next time.

In many ways my worry is that they do add walking around your own ship - which will be 10 minutes of 'ohh', and never again. Then again I worry that the same will be true of EDO on planets - 10 minutes wandering around saying 'oh, that ship is big, this planet is pretty' followed by ... but what do I do?

I guess we'll see soon 🤷‍♂️
