No Single Player Offline Mode then? [Part 2]

The "randomness" of procedural generation entirely depends on the algorithms you design, and in most cases could even be tweaked in an options menu (in an offline game, of course, online everyone has to have the same settings).

I went into more detail (and into your final question) in a rather long and probably boring post, if you're interested.

To answer your final question, though, if a user-influenced galaxy ends up being indistinguishable from a properly implemented procedurally generated one... why bother complicating things with user interaction, when procedural generation is simpler and cheaper?

Did read your thread before actually :)

Why does it make sense? Emergent game play mostly I'd say.

Let me tackle perception first. Is it indistinguishable? that depends highly on the person. If supply of commodity A decreases because a pseudo random process decided it had to decrease thus raising its price will not seem any different then a commodity increasing in price because of players / NPCs buying a lot of that commodity. So why do it at all? Mostly for what it allows. Now I have no idea how far Frontier intend to take this so I am just writing what I think would be possible. News, Missions and Trading can all intertwine together to provide emergent game play for players. Say it all starts with drought expected to hit soon on planet A in System B. Which means soon we're going to have missions to deliver water / trading water at high price. How about people could start exploring close by systems for good source of ICE to mine since this too might become highly requested. What about moving combat ships in the area as those miners will likely be the target of pirates? Thats not all though. Those miners moved from other places and the supply of Ore / ICE / Metals etc.. has fallen in those regions as people try to capitalize on the new ice market. What if some players ignore the whole Ice market and instead focus those previous Mining operations knowing that less miners will probably make what was already profitable more profitable ?

Essentially what I am trying to say it may not be possible to distinguish if a price change happened because of actual market forces or through some process trying to fake those market forces but thats not the point. The point is knowing that price change happened because of market forces rather then due to some random process engages people much much more. By having them trying to anticipate events, by having them trying to move resources to get there first and capitalize on an event. etc.. This is all emergent game play thats not really possible without actually keeping track of all the major variables and understandably with 4b systems its impossible to do that on an end user PC.

Ah, the cut my nose off to spite my face thing again. Ok, I've already been warned many on this thread will not listen to reason, I never believed it until right now.

Shok.
Many are just not listening at all.

However, if you want to be reasonable, the reasonable thing to do is not to back a KickStarter and let everyone else take the risk.

Of course is everyone took that view .....

I see forgiveness is a word lost on many here. You're telling me that even some of the worst third world nations that can run this game in solo online mode, yet westernized ones cannot! May I ask who or where on this planet you're referring to? Check global speeds for internet on average: http://www.netindex.com/download/allcountries/

Note: these speeds are mbps and not the less kbps of which this game needs for solo (singleplayer) mode.

Shok.

Try the middle of the Atlantic ocean, where I spend weeks at a time for my work. As a marine engineer, I work on commercial ships for over half of the year. I play video games while I'm out at sea, because there's not really a lot else for me to do on a ship in the middle of the ocean. But now that I cannot play offline, I cannot play this game on the ship. The offline mode was a big part of the reason I backed this game and was excited for it. Now I can only play while home, when I have lots of other things available to go out and do too.

It's frustrating though, to see them promise everything and get support, but then cut things out right before it comes out, no warning...

Although I am enjoying the game, I understand the people who are upset.Ditching offline play is bullsh.t.Only reason they are doing it because to prevent illegal copies.Let that be a lesson for you.DO NOT EVER BUY UNFINISHED GAMES.

While another says: " The immorality of what has a become a stereo-typical example of soulless corporate dollar-ing mentality is stark."

I think this sums up this thread now. Sorry folks but nothing new will really be added to the discussion.

No, but some of us want the developers to understand that we are disappointed in this decision, and others want refunds. And adding more and more posts only goes to emphasize how much they've upset/affected their backers/potential customers.

Hi All,

I want to keep you all updated.

We initially declined some people's request for refund as our records showed they have already played Elite: Dangerous online. After listening to many of the comments I received after my AMA here, we have since re-opened these requests and informed those people that we will be contacting them so that we can fully understand their individual situation before making a more informed decision.

We will be contacting them each in the next few working days.

Thanks,

David

So you're not doing anything that you haven't already done or told us about then?

Well, doing so cuts you off from some great experiences. Planet Explorers by Pathea is frigging awesome and each new update is a treasure-trove of new wonders. It's almost nearing completion now, and having witnessed the whole project from early alpha to where the game is now has been nothing but a thrillride. Awesome stuff.

Possibly an exaggeration.

Why? It's pretty clear where people stand. They either do or do not want a refund. If the reason is for something other than the removal of the offline mode then refuse, if it's for the reason of the removal of offline mode, you should honour it. Surely your reputation is more important than a few quid?
A refund can also be only part of the price paid. Especially in the beta program purchase that would make sense, since the full price includes the final game but includes other components too. I'm sure most of the complaining consumers can be reasoned with and finding a reasonable compromise is in the best interests of everyone.

Yes, indeed. I can't play it at work either (shame) so I make the extra effort to try get some time in at home. Though, I won't use this as an excuse to try derail Frontier Developments in their vision or endevours.

Shok.

Unfortunately not - but it comes with the territory sometimes.

Michael

Well there's everything that's wrong with some sections of gaming culture in a nutshell.

I think thats just disgraceful. I know people are upset about this issue but threatening people over a decision you don't agree with is not the way to deal with this or any other thing you don't agree with. I thought the majority of us here were sensible mature adults capable to taking difficult decisions on the chin and moving on but obviously I was wrong. I hope frontier have passed names on to the authorities because that's exactly what I would do.

I wanted to engage with the community. I was not allowed to, because I pointed out the heavy troll population, and explained a joke.

I wanted to engage with the Premium Beta. I was not allowed to, because the game repeatedly relocated the space station, never actually allowing me to dock.

I wanted to engage with the Beta. I was not allowed to, because the game refused to give me docking permission, despite hundreds of requests.

I originally wanted to play the released game online when I could; that want was rapidly washed away by the lax attitude towards idiocy on forums and complete non-working status of the servers, both problems that rapidly increase in proportion to the number of people.

I was happy to play the released game offline, knowing that I would at least be able to play without fear of idiots or server problems. I am now not allowed to, because of highly suspect reasons regarding "vision".

In other words, I have been short-changed on every single aspect of this. I would've happily overlooked the rest if I had a game at the end of it, but I don't. For me, Elite: Dangerous does not work online, and it does not work offline, therefore it does not work at all.

I would be incredibly disappointed with anything less than a full refund, as so far being repeatedly slapped around the face with a large trout would've been a preferable experience, and considerably cheaper too. I have been unable to "play" anything any reasonable person would consider a "game", and have been treated with nothing but disdain, even when trying to improve the game.

David mentioned that the servers could be archived and the archive released if we closed the servers for whatever reason.

Michael

And, so long as you actually lets us have the ability to run a local server I would be happy enough. That said, why don't you just bundle the servers and client together and knock an application that starts up the server and then loads the client on one machine... should be a relatively simple thing as they already talk to each other. Just have to change a bit of how and where they connect up...

You forgot the "vision" part.

No doubt. Have you considered the possibility that Mr. Brookes might have a better sense of perspective on the whole "threat" thing? (Though I think handing out your address to them is going a bit far, personally).

Yeah, but do you spend more than a week at a time at work? I spend several weeks, sometimes months at a time at work. I'm not trying to "derail" Frontier Developments in their vision or endeavors. I would like them to either reconsider their decision and keep to their word about offering an offline mode.
