No Single Player offline Mode then?

I fail to see how solo online is not mode for you. Universe slowly changes? But so what? Do you really want it that static?

I think you fail to see that some people would be happy with a static universe if that is all they could get as opposed to having to be being online all the time to be able to play the game.

No, it wasn't:

"How will single player work? Will I need to connect to a server to play?"

Update! The above is the intended single player experience. However it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server. You won't get the features of the evolving galaxy (although we will investigate minimising those differences) and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again we'll investigate).

Thanks Jamotide
That's not solo being described, that is offline play. Where do you see solo in that description?

Ironman
Open play
Groups, etc
Solo
Offline

...were the modes.

Now if you're capable of having a disagreement without relying on insensitive insults, I would ask you how this game is not primarily online only?

I'm sorry, I'm not aware of having insulted anyone?

Also I don't quite get the question (might you be mistaking me for someone else? I'm sorry, but I can't place the context), but in any case, this whole thread was caused by the fact that since the newsletter it is online only, while a lot of people had bought it because according to Frontier it would have an offline mode, and are now unhappy about the situation, many of them because they paid for a game they won't be able to play, so I don't know how (or why) you want me to argue otherwise.

Yeah mate, I was talking to someone else, doesn't it say it the reply I posted or did I forget to quote?
EDIT: Oh woops, sorry mate, I meant to reply to that Darkwalker guy, my bad.

Actually, yes. As an example:
I had planned to bring the game with me for the Christmas holiday, way up in the hellish mountains where I hail from. Any form of connectivity up there is just a wet dream.

Yes it was, but has gone away. It also says "DRM free" on my order NOW for the boxed copy. Something it will not be.

I thought it was fairly established based on looking at the archived versions of the store that the promise was not on there. You can't reverse delete stuff on the web.archive.org, that's the way it's designed.

This is EXACTLY what all this is about - there are many people all over this planet of ours who will be in this position - well not up a mountain but away from internet in some way or another - when they thought they could buy a game that would work offline

Actually to be really pedantic, it stands for Digital Restrictions Management :p

No it doesn't. That is an alternate meaning invented by anti-DRM groups to make it sound more sinister, because in their opinion it was more in line with what it does. To be honest, Digital Restriction Management does feel somewhat fitting, because pretty much all DRM gets cracked, and then all it does restrict legitimate users, but that isn't the intent. DRM is meant to protect the access and usage rights for a program, and that is where the name comes from. Daylen got it correct as Digital Rights Management.

The page it was on is not archived by the archive, as I said in a previous post (which I don't expect you to have seen, just saying).

Aaaanyway. As much as I hate this decision, I understand it. I appreciate what Frontier are doing, have done, will do, but like any dev they were paid to do those things. I feel I paid more than I would have if this feature was known to be cut earlier on, and that bites. I've persuaded others to pay money, who now can't play at all. Much like many might freak if Frontier suddenly said "we're not doing planetary landings" if they were looking forward to that feature, offline play was just as important to me - and many others. There are some who backed, supported, posted here waiting for their chance to get the game installed they merrily play offline who now cannot - ever - play Elite in their current location for plentiful reasons.

I do understand that this decision could have also been made final only this week, but again as I have said before, the method and timing couldn't have been much worse to announce. People, like me, need to vent, like any grieving process - as some have lost what they wanted, dreamed and paid for. Frankly I think things are made worse by those trying to stifle that process by telling them how their feelings don't matter. As I said to someone before, you are essentially walking up to someone in visible distress, then telling them how you're doing fine, they should feel the same way you do.

I was of the understanding it was digital roadblock management :D

But why not go with second best thing?

ninjad: nevermind.

Are you even reading the posts you reply to? He says "to be able to play the game". Without offline - for some people - there is no second option "to be able to play the game". That's why these people are upset, stop stifling their communication with your opinion on something that in no way affects you.

I'm disappointed for several reasons

(1) I am also someone who regularly suffers with an unstable internet connection, this is out of our control

(2) Even with all this argument about what was or wasn't implied about offline mode etc, I feel like FD HAVE gone back on something that was going to be in the game. It wasn't ever said that solo mode would need an internet connection, and whilst some people are arguing that solo mode in no way implies offline, it doesn't imply online either and to any normal human, solo would be more likely to be offline play.

(3) I feel it's the wrong decision for the game, and the reason that this decision has been made is irrelevant - It doesn't really matter if offline mode is more static than online mode - it is very much to be expected, as well as the fact that some aspects can be randomized, since you're the only human being making an affect on the galaxy. Therefore the argument that is made for no true offline mode seems completely irrelevant to me.

(4) This decision has been made when a lot of people can't even maintain good connection to the servers even when their internet is up and running. This means that unless the problem is fixed, this is going to be another cause of people not playing the game, on top of: Internet is down, no free bandwidth (such as from someone else in the house playing games / movies, reduced internet speeds which sometimes we suffer from), servers under maintenance, servers down, servers experiencing bandwidth related issues, and the inevitable switching off the servers at the end of the game's life.

Thanks for posting this. I couldn't find it. Apparently it's been moved to the Elite Fiction forum.

Great post, well said.

I'm disappointed about the offline announcement but, if I'm honest not surprised. I'm also one of those that have invested far too much money in this game, so need it to work.

I'll be hopping mad if they don't implement planetary landings too. That said i'm loving what we have so far.

Timing could not of been worse considering the launch party on Saturday. I'm not sure FD realised the impact of this change or the emotion attached.
