No Single Player offline Mode then?

We've got an offline mode, it's sitting in the download section at FD now, called "Elite 84" I think... It's free to download so think of it as getting two games for the price of one :D That should put a spring back in everyones step!! lol

I'm looking allover FD's site for that download, but I might be totally hit by a blonde moment. ^^
Can you spot me the link? Thanks!

Since you need to be connected to FD servers to play.

Yes, because it's *online* game.

I could copy paste same discussions at the beginning of KS and it was same parade of politics.

I feel for those people who really don't have connection or good one. But rest of discussion is just usual "online privacy" line, which is offtopic to be honest.

As people can read posts in very different ways I would like to make it clear that I can understand why people are upset and im not trying to dismiss their concern but I believe the requirement for a connection to the server to be the best option.
Also two apologies before i start, 1 As its quite late where I am I apologise in advance for poor spelling / grammar and 2 as there are so many pages of this I have skimmed several pages and then jumped to the end to add my opinion I may have missed out posts that have already covered the points i make.

I have to admit i was bit surprised that people who have access to the beta didnt know that this game would require an internet connection, as every time there was an update you couldnt play (other than the training missions in some cases) if this game had a single player component then you would have been able to continue playing regardless of the server state, you would even have been able to play older versions by just not downloading a patch. The reasons for doing this i expect are; partly to prevent cheat/hacks, partly to allow an interactive world that feels moore alive than a purely generated one (trade goods changing price depending on how many people buy them), party to gather data on what does and does not work so the game can be updated and patched, partly so that the galaxy will run on low spec computers (not counting the internet as part of the computer itself) and probably more reasons beside. For the people that are not currently playing the Beta then i dont expect them to have known about the connection requirement, that probably could have been made more obvious to people purchasing the game, perhaps someone can confirm when the minimum spec was listed on the website? As it does state a connection is required and for as far as i can remember it has said this.

Below copied from elite web page at the time of writing.

MINIMUM RECOMMENDED HARDWARE SPECIFICATION:
Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD
Internet connection
SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS:
Windows 7.x
Windows 8.x

I am not condemning people that dont read the fine print but as i live in a rural area where broadband is generally usable but not without its downtime i am used to checking the requirements in case its going to be a consideration when paying for the game. If the kickstarter specifically said that this would be completely stand alone, no internet required and you made your purchasing choice based on the kickstarter information then you have more right to be upset.

X Beyond the frontier does something similar to this in a single player way so it is possible to make a bit of a galaxy for offline play however it had far more limitations in size of the galaxy and how much variety actually showed up in it. When i played X Beyond the frontier I spent most of the time wishing i could easily join other people to show off my shiny ships, i think i might be a bit shallow in that regard but not being able to interact with other people is important for me.

I expect every game coming out to require some amount of internet connectivity, maybe this is because I am so accustomed to steam and have all my movies, music and other entertainment streamed to me or maybe its because i am a mainly multiplayer PVE PVP player that is used to having the internet connection in order to play. Personally i find AI far to easy to learn and then avoid or kill or confuse, trying to pull a fast one on a human is a much harder thing to do and so for me provides a greater challenge.

Just for a bit of balance, Valve had trouble keeping Steam up and running when they first launched with half life 2, it took several days before i could play half life 2 and they had $100's of millions to throw at servers alone. I am not saying that its going to happen to this game but its wise to remember the past.

hopefully these ramblings have been coherent and hopefully everyone can gain a resolution to this quickly regardless of whether this is a game breaking issue for them or not.

If anyone could host a server it would still be an online game and a DRM Free game.

guess i understand when Michael means the game size depends a lot on missions, markets, etc and increases because of them. When players accept missions, there are always a new one that pop up in the bulletin board.... it wasnt that way in previous game , once u take a mission, there was not another one that would pop up instantly. and taht way , missions numbers can increase drasticlly , as well as players hauling tons of cargoes ,

Wow! I'm blown away by how quickly some of the community appears to have turned on FD.

More than any announcement this saddens single me the most :/

I'm also confused by some anti-online comments for a title that's download only. I get the point, but surely the trade off between a live evolving economy, dynamic changing events and unpredictability are worth loosing off-line solo play for, aren't they?

Wow!...

No. I have a very good Internet connection. I preordered premium beta ED over SC because of the single player option. Online Solo is not single player because now whether I like it or not other players actions now affect my play. From what I have seen I will now have to try and compete with hard core players for viable mining and trading options (major elements of the game) or not be able to participate in them becausr I simply don't have the that much time to invest into this game. I want static markets. If I find a gold rich asteroid ring today but bwcause of my work schedule or due to obligations related to family or whatever and can't log back on for a week I don't want my find to go from abundant to depleted.

Elite ' moto is now "blaze your own trail as long as it follows the path we defined for you" or "infinite freedom as long as your play style falls into our vision for our game"

But you said you were done with MS, make up your mind, Did you feel like you struck a blow for console peasantry when you dumped your xbox?

Dude please, I play games. The whole PC masterrace crap doesn't interest me in the least. Consoles are a point of convenience for when I'm stuck remaining in bed. Whatever people have to say about that is moot. I have as much fun playing a game on console as that I have playing a game on PC.
FUN is why I game.
Not to look down on other people while do a matingdance around my intelbox.

This isn't The Matrix, it's still a video game.

Even then, in The Matrix you can only exist within the rules defined by the parameters of the program.

You seem to be confusing Frontier with some kind of gods who can manipulate reality?
