No Single Player offline Mode then?

The more complex it gets the more the project plan needs to get modified.
But I have no doubt that FD will deliver almost all the remaining requirements and...
we have not seen the final game yet!

Regarding myself I am looking forward to the next release and to the premium event in Cambridge this week.

Good for you.

Solo mode enables mods and hacks. This will seriously cut down on the hack development, and it will be mean we don't have players with hacked ships exploring the universe at a vastly accelerated pace and then spilling the secrets (it only takes a few). It means we don't have crackers data-mining the server files, digging up all the secrets placed there and unweaving the procedural rules that govern factions and NPCs.

It's the existence of the offline mode that was endangering the game experience of everybody _but_ those offline players who would have played it straight.

If you workry about crackers, bots and cheats, this has cut that threat down a lot.

Fully agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, point well made.

Fully agree on this.

And btw, the more complex this game become the more it is simply impossible to simulate it on an ordinary computer.

I am into AI (aritificial intelligence) and it is very obvious that this kind of technology requires a huge amount of data and processor power. Already simulating 1000 of neurons is an amazing task. But in ED we are talking about simulating a whole galaxy with millions of NPCs. Now think about how much resources this requires!
And it's only the beginning!
I am quite sure FD is working on making those NPCs more and more intelligent with time going on. Forget about letting this work on an ordinary computer - simply not possible.

EA said the same about SimCity... and this argument is already void because it's been proven that ED can run offline with no problem - only market data is unavailable.

Tired of this thread!

I hope FD will not read too much of it and concentrate on producing this amazing game!

You're not the only one tired of this thread. 425 pages to moan about a decision that's already been taken is just ridiculous. We're supposed to be adults. There will be no offline mode so just deal with it. I hope a moderator closes this thread soon and stop people making more.

If they had stuck to their original plan and created a cut-down galaxy "server" (for want of a better term) without all the background sim & networking chaff then surely the only thing the hackers would have been affecting is their own game?

Now, when (not if) they get in, they have the potential to ruin the entire game for everybody... solo or not.

I don't think that's better, sorry.

I actually forked out £50 for the beta on Friday, same day as this news broke but before. Even though I've had a lot of fun over the weekend playing this excellent game, I must admit I feel a bit shafted, because one of the main reasons I wanted to get this game is that I travel a whole lot, and I love playing this type of game e.g. on intercontinental flights, and in hotels where there is no or bad broadband (happens more than you'd think).

Anyway, I have to say, I love the game so far, all the detractors of the beta in general I think are shooting way over the target, this can still get great reviews if a few minor bugs are fixed, BUT BUT BUT....

IT CAN'T BE THAT HARD TO DO AN OFFLINE MODE WITH A STATIC GALAXY.

It just can't, period. It doesn't need to be in sync with the server version.

My feeling/fear here is that this is all more about DRM and ensuring that nobody can play without an online verified account, and that nobody can make clone servers based on the code in the offline client.

Well, Surprise Surprise, that's still gonna happen. But the legit players are going to suffer from this.

I sincerely hope that this decision is reversed, and that a fully offline mode is added in an upcoming patch.

I'm not sure what exactly you are agreeing on. Adept's point was about whether the threads he cited counted as a 'we knew this was coming', (in reply to me). I do not think they did, those threads dealt with security concerns regarding offline, that is not in dispute, but there was nothing in them to suggest 'offline' was not going to happen, as I said, nobody had the faintest idea this wasn't in until 15:42 on Friday gone, to claim otherwise is folly.

Completely disagree, an offline mode allows modders (or hackers if you want) to explore in a safe environment with no impact on online players. Forcing them online just adds more people that can exploit to an environment were that exploit negatively affects others. Look at the PS3 example, not much effort went into breaking it until they removed linux support. So while you can have your own justifications for removing offline being a good thing - this I don't think can be one of them.

You have no clue what you are talking about. Of course you can run a single instance on your computer with 30 NPCs around you fighting them. But i am talking about the WHOLE universe!!! Millions of NPCs, millions of markets, millions of events ...

Why are people going on about shutting servers down before the game is even released ? Why would FD be thinking about that Don't seem logical to me
I don't know what FD is thinking.
Players may just think that when people are asking for refunds.

I'm not saying you are completely wrong, but PG negates a lot of those issues, particularly in a 'cut down/static/ galaxy.

I think you'd better brace yourself. There'll be many out there who aren't even aware of this issue yet, and when they become aware there'll be more outrage. Some won't find out until the 16th of December, imagine their reaction.

Why would anyone need to run millions of systems on their PC simultaneously? Michael Brookes already has said it's possible to run Elite Dangerous offline on a single PC, but that Frontier didn't have the time and resources to develop an 2nd build of the game.

"Solo offline mode enables mods and hacks."

That's what i agree with.
