Players upset with no Solo Offline mode
I must say that I have to agree with a lot of the people who are disappointed with no Solo Offline. But there is much more to it. Another thread added four more pages as I wrote this one so rather than be lost in the mix I thought to start a new one with a lot less emotion and more understanding per why things happen. Then maybe we can come up with solutions.

A player decides to support a Kickstarter game where they pay SERIOUS money to play and test the pre-release versions. Remember back when developers asked for Beta testers at no charge? How times have changed. Still players supported Elite Dangerous for many reasons among which was the basic concept, where it was going, what one would receive with a specific pledge amount, and the eventual game release whether download or a physical box. In the case of the Elite games there were also expectations versus a brand new game no one has ever seen.

Then add in a massive forum with weekly updates and the player becomes part of an amazing concept where they express their desires and concerns, the FD managers listen and then have the programmers incorporate suggestions that work...as well as take out items that at the time seemed like a good idea but the players didn't. On paper it is an excellent concept to produce an amazing game and already know that upon it's release many thousands of players already love it!

Then one month before the official release a bomb is dropped that there will not be a Solo Offline version. That is sad as many who don't have Internet access all the time will be limited in game play. It also removes a major opportunity to have talent get into the coding and come up with new directions and supporting websites that even FD never thought of. One of the positive issues per reverse engineering is that after one completes a game they can refresh it with different ships and equipment and make the game a whole new experience. Thus I had an Eagle in Frontier Elite II that would traverse the entire galaxy and had many fun hours flying it. The farthest system with a station was at Adaqu (-4709, -4424) at 51,869.71LY from Sol.

Other games like Freelancer by Microsoft were Solo offline and they had a dedicated online server for about 8 years. But they went so far as to also supply the Server version on the CD. Thus anyone with a dedicated IP address could setup their own online gaming experience. There were hundreds and many are still online today as I write this. Design wise this allowed for seriously adding all kinds of mods and ships offline while kicking them out on the online server play. Per those who cheat there was more talent with catching them. Overall it worked out great and many still play Freelancer. Just one example. It won't work with the massive ED universe but then it might have worked for a simple Solo Offline.

Thus a player spends real money, plays hundreds of hours, then feels that they have been cheated. What was missing? Trust. FD didn't trust the players as with all the good responses there were just as many stupid ones not to mention all the whiners or others who have their own agenda or actually hated the game. Nor did the players trust FD as they weren't really keeping us up to date specifically on what will and will not be in the game. Thus the Newsletters were more about concepts promoting the game and looking for more sales as perceived by the players. Everyone knows that perception is reality. It didn't help that the Newsletter always started with a promotion buying into the game. But perception sucks just like ergonomics, global warming and political correctness...but that is the world that we live in.

Yet it could have been worse. Why mention no Solo Offline now? As a business decision prior to an imminent game release it was the wrong one. They could have said nothing and go for the Nov 22nd party in the U.K. followed by the Dec 16th release. When the subject came up later they could even do a PR reply per, "We're having issues combining the server side with the offline version.". But FD told us. They could have told us sooner but maybe they still believed that it could be pulled off. It took David Braben to decide to announce the decision. So for the bad timing in a business world I think that decision adds in a little bit of trust on the FD side.

Real world game development also involves a lot more than Beta testers. It has corporate structures, hardware, payroll, banking and private investors, stock investments and an army of lawyers both securing all the rights to move forward (yes at one time Braben didn't own them all) as well as those waiting in the wings to capitalize on a game if it goes ballistic. Thus FD couldn't be open as they would like with all the vultures out there waiting to find their weakness.
-
So the end result is FD drops a bomb and many are upset considering legal action. Well Elite has always had legal actions so welcome to the party! Yes I think that the programmers got so involved into the server side with all the available storage that they missed keeping it usable with a Solo Offline version. You've seen these guys and gals on the live streams. They are all young and enthusiastic and were probably not even born in 1984 or even heard of a Commodore 64, Amiga or Acorn Archimedes much less a Bleeb! Nor does dropping the bomb sit well with a lot of players. Michael Brookes did try to respond in another thread but it was a losing issue from the start. I'm surprised that he bothered but then he is probably pretty young too. He is now a much more experienced Executive Producer!

Elite Dangerous is going to define gaming once again. If it succeeds every producer of games will redefine how games are created. I'll stay around to see it and hope many who are upset will consider seeing how it goes. But it is created by humans who don't always make the right decisions at the right time. NASA lost 17 lives from Apollo to the Shuttle missions and most were due to a management system who became complacent in space travel versus the political pressures to succeed which continued their government funding. So far as I know no one has died developing Elite Dangerous but we still have imperfect humans creating it. They even picked Nov 22nd, 2014 for the big event. Nov 22nd, 1963 the world stopped when president John F Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. I would have picked another date just to be cautious.

Note: Some moderator decided to move my post into the 60 plus pages on this topic. It will hit 70 pages before I update this post. Thus I guess he didn't want anyone to actually read it and come up with solutions.
