No Single Player offline Mode then?

Good for you. Can you play it on an oil rig, in the Australian Outback or a tent in the Iraqi desert. Some of the posters here say they can't.

The last time I was on an offshore installation it was strict radio silence for perforation. I've never been to Australia, unfortunately I have been to Iraq. People will find a way to connect if they have to, and they have necessary funds. I understand that being an issue, and I can totally sympathise, but in many cases it will not be absolutely impossible. Inconvenient and expensive perhaps - but then you have to balance your desire to play a game of all things, against your need and indeed ability to do so.

Reading a book may indeed be a better proposition in some cases.

Let's hope with our comments, we can persuade Frontier to reconsider some of the alternatives they have alluded to.

Yes, but not at the expense of the entire game experience. One day I hope they have the resources to provide everyone with an offline version - but sadly they don't have those resources at this current time.

I've just posted on Kickstarter and I'll update the FAQ shortly.

The intended single player experience with the evolving galaxy requires connecting to the server. However it will be possible to play the game without this. You won't get all of the same features such as new missions and changing galaxy conditions, but you will be able to play the game. What the exact differences will be hasn't been determined yet.

We're not sure whether you'll be able to sync with the seerver after starting your own game, we'll look into that nearer the time.

I've had the wayback machine crawl the page for posterity, and I've taken an archival copy just in case Michael gets a case of cold feet about those words. With that out of the way.

Offline mode was a big selling point for me as well, not because I lack the online connection, I have one, it's infamously stable among my friends, it has the kind of latency most people turn green with envy at (I average less than 10ms to most of europe), but I might want to play on a laptop, I might want to go places where the internet is spotty, I might want to just not be online and not have to deal with the world. I have anxiety issues, I don't need the world tugging at my sleeve all the time. Since Michael made it very crystalline that there was going to be the possibility to play without needing to connect, I went ahead and bought in. I made absolutely sure of this point, now he's turned around and rowed back on his words.

I'm not happy.

We really need a poll to find out just how many people want offline mode because of things and stuff, that will send a clear message to FD.And then maybe we will get clear answers as to why it isn't possible.

I imagine the number of offline single players would be pretty massive considering the pedigree of the earlier Elite games. And those that played those early games and backed this one, I would also have thought that offline would make perfect business sense to these long time Elite players and backers.

Not everyone likes or wants "always online"

Titus you're being incredibly disingenuous when you ask why Nomadski doesn't just do something else for 9 months.

If we use your house analogy, that's like you saying it's a gorgeous house, you can live it in for 3 months, why you whinin? Just go live somewhere else for 9 months.

And since you constantly say that online only isn't a problem for you, and you clearly don't get why it is for some, maybe you should stop stomping all over people whose views you seem incapable or unwilling to understand?

Quoting something from 2 years ago? Two years is a LONG time in software development.

Thanks for the web archive.

I see your point, but to clarify : You're suggesting that at the point-of-sale there was no claim about Offline mode, and thus consumers have not been misled. Although I'm sure you would agree that it has been said elsewhere, from official sources, and on official pages.

So are you suggesting that a person/company selling goods can make ambit claims whenever and wherever they like, so long as they do not make those claims at the point of sale?

That quote is being taken out of context.

Here was the actual exchange:

Here he's talking about downloading the contents of the entire server.

That said, I remain hopeful that somehow, they can release a dumbed down, offline, static version of the galaxy that removes the secrets that need to be kept in Frontier's wheel house as it were. Even if it's a huge file or set of files. I have no idea what that might entail. I understand if it's impossible, but I'd like to see folks who really wanted to play this way be able to, even if it produced a static, limited format.

It would be understandable, for example, if a commander playing that way would be unable to sync that commander to the online game. In that case, just let players have an offline commander and an online commander. Or, that commodity prices would have to be static or randomized, as in the original game. That equipment prices would be static. That missions would be randomized. That to access additional content, players would have to download a periodic update. Obviously, this is a real deal breaker for enough people. And then there's the legitimate concern about being able to play the game 30 years from now if and when it's no longer supported. For posterity's sake, I really hope they can find a way. We're witnessing the birth of an amazing game.

Let's hope with our comments, we can persuade Frontier to reconsider some of the alternatives they have alluded to.

I disagree, it is not out of context. Running the galaxy on a home machine is infact not only a valid solution, it was the intent of the original offline mode. The reason it was scrapped, was to keep the secrets, therefor, my comment is exactly on target.

I didn't say Online Only wasn't a problem for me - for at least one week in every month I am away from home, I don't have my PC or my peripherals.

I can't wait for the time I can get back to play ED, but in the time I can't I play other games on my laptop, or find other things to do.

I'd love for there to be an offline mode I can play.

This thread has been ok for a little while but now it's getting too personal again. No attacks. No trolling. No baiting.

Discuss in a civil manner please.

It was actually a forced chargeback, with a deception claim attached. I don't expect others to be that brazen, but the more the merrier.

Me Im waiting on Customer Services to wake up and get back to me. If I can get a refund I can leave happier and lurk to see how ED pans out. If I don't well I'll just have to play solo without the mindless fun I could of had in offline.

I too have searched through the web.archive.org listings. I cannot find mention of single player off-line on the store site. I'm not saying it isn't there. I just haven't seen it. Has anyone found it?

Funnily enough their KS page was up before their online store. They were asking for, and taking money a LONG time before their online store was up and running.

The KS page DID have offline mode mentioned upon it, for those trying to suggest FD never promised offline mode is incorrect.

Well congratulations, Baby and Bathwater. If that continues then any glimmer of solo mode will never see the light of day.

1) You're pulling funds from Frontier to be able to achieve this in the future
2) Frontier will realise they don't need to cater to the offline-only community and continue to support and grow the game for people who are happy to have an online mode.

lol must be early there bro .. and this has been keeping you up.

go to bed now, no doubt it will exceed 100 pages easily once your side of the world wakes up

:p
I haven't been up this early in months. Ive breached the wall and am now running on adrenaline so I cant easily get to sleep lol.

The game youre playing is obvious to me and I don't like it.

Its kinda the same, just the war is against our Prime Minister and his Mining Company mates :D

Nah not really, dont mean to make fun of your service, just trying to lighten the mood somehow..

i am quite worried to think what would happen to elite if media blogs and news sites spotted a new "the sims" case.

i have to disagree, i won't ask for a refund right now, but on release day
but i want to give them a chance to reiterate...but sadly in this world money talks, and forum posts won't

Certainly as far as I'm aware of, the modes promised were:

Ironman
All Open
All Group
Solo Play

In that, the feeling I had was there was an assumption that solo offline would be available. Some language does suggest it was a goal of Frontier.

However goals move based on how project develop. Simply, the goal for solo offline, if there ever was one, was moved and may no longer be possible.

I have a goal of going to Mars before I die. Technology and wealth dictates that this might not be possible.
