No Single Player offline Mode then?

I disagree, it is not out of context. Running the galaxy on a home machine is infact not only a valid solution, it was the intent of the original offline mode. The reason it was scrapped, was to keep the secrets, therefor, my comment is exactly on target.

No, the intent was at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous#project_faq_43734 :

You won't get the features of the evolving galaxy (although we will investigate minimising those differences) and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again we'll investigate).

Which is not the same thing as downloading the entire living galaxy on Frontier's server.

Once the hard work relating to the release is over, I hope FD will review their decisions on OFFLINE mode, and reinstate it as a development goal, with high priority.

And, as a side note to those few people in this thread who have "directed" ONLINE focused players to cease "sticking their oar in" w.r.t. this matter, I suggest you moderate your position a little. I have no vested interest in this OFFLINE aspect whatsoever, as I have no drive to play in that mode, and didn't care two hoots about such things in the kickstarter doco.

Yet... here I am, expressing an opinion here on the forums about "your" OFFLINE issue. Hope you don't mind.

I must say, it's hard, sometimes, to tune in to the message and the issues behind it on online forums. It's all too easy for that message to get swamped, crushed and pulped by those who express themselves with wild-eyed, arm-waving hysteria and/or unwarranted aggression.

To those prone to communicate like that, please stop - it doesn't help your message if your own post generates a dozen knee-jerk responses kicking back at you with similar, reflected tone.

Dayumm, and I'm posting this on page seventy-something. I guess that horse has bolted... and had offspring that bolted... which then went on to have their own offspring. That also bolted. :) Oh well.

I give it another 12 hours before a mod shuts the thread down saying that the thread for the following reason " generic moderator quote" needs to close this thread.

If that is the case, I pre-emptively blame....such and such for the closure of this thread.

Was it just me or didn't the main menu of the game itself have an offline option that was redded out . . .

I bought the game 6 weeks ago from the store, I knew very little about it and hadn't read this forum or seen any development goals. It clearly stated on the website that offline solo play would be possible upon release.

Well congratulations, Baby and Bathwater. If that continues then any glimmer of solo mode will never see the light of day.

1) You're pulling funds from Frontier to be able to achieve this in the future
2) Frontier will realise they don't need to cater to the offline-only community and continue to support and grow the game for people who are happy to have an online mode.

1) Yes, and when the Card Processors start issuing warnings because multiple people get the bright idea to follow this guy's example (and believe me, you don't need to hit a high threshold), they can put you on a "Bad merchant" list, when that happens, you end up in a -world of pain-. Frontier absolutely does not want to wind up in a position where people are issuing chargebacks en masse. So it's in their interests to get on top of this over the weekend, either by issuing some form of public statement to cool the fires or otherwise stop people contemplating going a similar route. Whacking them with a chargeback is an extreme step, but it's not something I'd deem entirely unjustified, they made it clear there would be offline functionality, and right up until about a month prior to the actual release they were accepting funds on that basis. In the UK that now means anyone who bought in on the basis of purchasing a product with Offline Mode as a potential feature has a likely claim under the Sale of Goods Act (material deviation). Considering the product isn't officially *released* it'd be extremely likely that it'd go through as well. You'd not get the money back for beta access (about £15) but you'd get everything else.

2) Speculative, and the damage that comes with breaking a promise, even one that's only in appearance can cause damage to a company in excess of the actual numbers affected (see spacebase DF-9 and the mess around that).

You sure it wasn't the play button redded out due to inconnectivity?

Why? what effect has it had before?

well, it made a multi-billion company like microsoft eat up their drm policy, and many games got a reeeally bad rep on launch.

i was asking myself what would happen to the (already troubled) release of elite if some gaming site like kotaku or polygon noticed something similar happened here

They deserve be getting funds pulled from them. That is how the world works, we aren't giving them money out of being generous and philanthropic. I paid for one thing and got another, simple as that. In every industry, if you pay for something and don't get what you want, you get your money back one way or another. Secondly, despite what people may think, ED is in direct competition with SC in terms of retaining players in the long run. The biggest draw to ED was the offline single player, something SC didn't have. Now it's gone and we have two games that are both online only. FD are going to go into a spiral of losses in the coming future, mark my words.

I believe from your previous post you were a Premium Beta backer, correct?

No you paid for exactly what you got, which is:

Elite: Dangerous - Premium Beta

INCLUDES Lifetime Expansion Pass

• Beta online multiplayer PLUS Single Player Combat missions to develop your Sidewinder skills
• Automatic access to all the Beta development stages
• All major downloadable expansion packs as they are released

Available to download and play NOW

On the game's full release you also get the Elite: Dangerous Mercenary Edition, loaded with digital extras:
• A digital download Elite: Dangerous
• Your very own Eagle fighter ship docked in a secondary location in-game
• Exclusive pack of ship paint jobs
• A ‘day one’ ship decal
• A digital players guide
• A digital concept art book
• Plus loads more digital goodies to be announced over the coming weeks.

You paid for nothing more, nothing less.

Also, bringing up SC (which I don't back) you might want to check your facts. SC does include a separate single player game, Squadron 42, developed here in the UK by a different development team. Also SC, it's barely met any of it's goals too - which shows software development is hard.

Edit: I think you may need to take a step back, a deep breath and consider what you are doing. Over 100 people have worked really hard over the last two and more years to bring you the best product they can and basically you are spitting in their face because your nose has been put out of joint by a video game.

What I have learnt from this thread, over the last few hours:

- That many original backers, who put in substantial money, wanted a true offline mode

- That there are genuine reasons for an offline mode

- There was a poll which showed huge numbers wanted an offline mode

- That there are a large number of people who still want the old-school, offline, the galaxy on your computer experience

I have also learnt:

- That a true offline mode would practically be a new product

This started off as a real rage-fest, and I'm glad I stayed with this to see the actual underlying reasons behind the upset and sadness. FD surely knew all of the above, I have just learnt it tonight. It's a real mess and it's a damn shame they didn't come clean with this a bloody long time ago.

As someone who isn't affected by this and is loving the game and progress, I STILL want to see some kind of non-waffle response from FD on this. I hope to god they just realised at the last minute it wasn't going to happen and didn't string everyone along to get the hardcore KS fans onboard.

For those who are affected by this I wish you all the very best and hope something good comes of it.

I've actually sobered up now and it's time for bed.

Or worse, IGN. The ignorant flock to that one en mass.

What about the people who bought Alpha/Beta backer or pre-release through the zaonce.com store where it was clearly stated there was an offline mode?

Well, I'm really disappointed and extremely angry. I really won't be buying any more ED merchandise or other FD products in the future, virtual or otherwise.

For the other 9 months, can you not play another game? What other things can you not do in those 9 months that you can in the other 3? Please, think about the answer.

Of course I could, I could do a million other things.

Here's the deal, I started gaming as kid with Pong, Space Invaders, etc. I thought games were cool, I taught myself electronics and then went to university and received an engineering degree, for 25+ years I have been creating games and 3d engines...not because of any of these arcade games I played but because of one game I played on the C64, called Elite.

Elite and my imagination is what shaped my career, I am nearly 50 now and doing exactly what I want to do with my life, the only thing I have ever regretted/pined for was a modern Elite, (Frontier and Frontier II were great, but I knew they were only a wisp of what they could be). Now, 30 years later it's here, I love it, (even with all it's warts and bugs), I'm ecstatic, but I am being told I can play it for a few weeks and then I have to wait 3/4 of year to play it again.

Really?

Answer your question?

I'm an older gamer, who like you guys, played the game way back when. Unlike you, however, I now never play offline games. I really enjoy the excitement that comes with knowing that there are other humans out there playing in my universe. It adds a sense of community, makes it feel less solitary and ultimately makes for a more dangerous and exciting play area - for me.

That being said, you still have solo mode. Can you help me understand why that's not good enough? Is it because you don't like the idea of anyone else effecting your game world - even where they are totally invisible? Is it because you sometimes game on a pc not connected to the Internet? I'm genuinely curious - pls bear with me.

Yes it is.

Even on the internet, the news takes it's time to wind through the grapevine, but I'd not be too surprised if this pops up on either Rockpapershotgun or Eurogamer in the next day or two, given the threadnaught this has created here. Good grief... I thought the Warlords of Draenor launch from Blizzard had caused an inferno, and then Frontier Developments goes and does this? Seriously. Game Developers, STAHP.

Definitely got to go to bed now. The thread has got to the stage where you have people joining it who have ready very little of it (I can't really blame them, it's huge) and they're just making ill-informed comments. They're repeatedly upsetting people who have been in the thread a long time who have utterly valid reasons for being annoyed for losing the offline mode that they wanted and, in some cases, needed to play the game. You've also got a few that can't seem to make any posts without being snide.

It's a shame Frontier felt it necessary to do a runner and let it fester all weekend.
