No Single Player offline Mode then?

So yes, multiplayer, to me, is clearly a bug, a gimmick I have no use for, something that makes the game less reliable and less fun, since developers waste time implementing and balancing it instead of adding proper features to the game (after all, why have content if the players can pay to generate it? who cares if the "content" generated by the players is so crappy that the game isn't worth playing?).
Oh well. I guess there is always this if you enjoy living in the past.

The "next" would be the rest of my post, which you appear to have ignored. Thanks.

There are too many external & unknown variables between me and my game. I don't give a rats ass for multiplayer. I just want to play Elite: Dangerous. I thought I'd be able to do that, because for the last two years, that's what was promised.

Now we're all completely at the mercy of the external variables in order to play, and for every single one of them to be working correctly at the same time.

Because no online game has survived multiple years in the history of ever, right? WoW is dead, Guild Wars 2 is dead, Diablo 2's servers are caput, HellMOO is gone, right?

Heck, I have a friend that still plays this old isometric MMO from ages ago. Its servers are still fully operational. Again, there is zero point in whining over server issues that may happen at some unknown point in the distant future. Just enjoy the game, you only get about 60 (I'm assuming you're around 16-18 or so? Judging from your posts so far.) or so more trips around Sol before you're decomposing carbon, may as well enjoy the ones you have. Unless you gain enjoyment over complaining, in which case carry on, who am I to rob you of your enjoyment.

My only concern is the future, if servers had to shut down for whatever reason, or 20 years now Frontier may simply not exist -- whatever the case it is, I'm hoping that the technologies would be released. I'm not worried about currently, but more about in the future. Thousands of games are played endlessly over the years, I don't see ED being any different. Might not be an issue right now, but it could be later. That's really my only issue.

How is this even a question. The obvious answer here is: "As long as humanly possible." Honestly, it's like you think Frontier don't like the game they are spending countless hours developing or something...

It's a legitimate question, and as a possible customer I have every right to ask it. If there was an offline mode I wouldn't have to, but that mode is suddenly gone now. I want to know if they are planning on pulling the plug in a year or two's timeframe. So far the only hint of an answer we have gotten from FD is this:

I've no idea at the moment. We're planning on supporting this game for some time to come.

Michael

This, coupled with the lies, and Michael's earlier quote of "the game needs to talk to the server from time to time" actually translating into "the game needs to talk to the server for every transaction", well let's just say I'd like some clarification on their timeframe as to how long I'll be able to play the game if I buy it.

So, please answer how long does Frontier Development plan on keeping the servers online and functional?

I suggest you do the same. I wonder how you will feel about the whole thing when you can't play ED in a couple of years anymore, because FD decided that running the servers wasn't feasible. Just for reference: Electronic Arts, a multi billion dollar company, usually shuts down the online servers for their games after about 2-3 years.

I think the difference is that Frontier are putting this across as being a long-term thing.

If it was an EA project, then I think we'd be expecting server shutdown before Elite 2 appears in 2 years time, and then Elite 3 a bit later and so forth. EA has franchises where the product is replaced and the previous one becomes redundant. By the very nature of Elite, I wouldn't have thought that'd be practicable, so I'm not unduly concerned about any servers going down within a couple of years!!

Thread closing for a couple of minutes to give us a chance to catchup with some cleanup.

It won't be long.

Take a breather please, do not restart this somewhere else, we'll be unlocking soon.

~

Okay ready to go again?

Please don't quote reportable posts or reply, just report them and don't engage with the problem. It just makes more work.

Opening...

How. How, in 2014, is being able to team up with my friends in Canada, the UK, and New York (I'm in MN) a bug? How is it in any way detracting from my experience to have fun with my friends over vast distances? How? I can't even fathom what would make you say something this colossally wrong...

Hm, weird, isn't the MMO part of the game completely broken at the moment? Hasn't it always been?

At the end of the previous century I was playing MUDs, and group play was working perfectly then. You could team up with a stranger, you could join a clan, and eveything was working without a glitch.

How does that work in Elite, exactly?

To me it looks like we're not getting a proper multiplayer and we're not ever going to get an offline mode. On top of that, the offline mode cancellation was "announced" as quietly as possible...

Oh, yeah, I know GOG, thanks, I've bought quite a few great classics from them (they're quite better than Steam at making sure old games can run properly on modern machines) :D

(I wouldn't call that "living in the past", though; massive multiplayer is mostly just a fad.)

Some people are very angry, i think they need to go down to disapointed because its much more constructive to have a quiet view and discuss with Frontier to have this offline feature later.
Actually Mickael say that its impossible, at impossible anyone is able to.
But Frontier can continue to look at it, thinking about some customers here who have the need of it cause lack of a good internet network.
Dont close the door Frontier, let it opened and work on it. You can't send us this feature now and its understood by most of all the community but with the quality of the work still done i am pretty sure you can do the impossible :)
Keep faith :)

This also touches on the whole DRM argument. Always online does NOT equal DRM. Is WoW using DRM? No, not really since the whole game is based around the fact that it is online. Same thing applies to ED due to the shared universe.

I thought DRM was for copy protection, to prevent piracy. Isn't that what online-only play is doing? I don't see how we can use the same account on more than one machine simultaneously so to my mind it meets the basic requirements of DRM regardless of whether it is specifically for the intent of preventing piracy or not. If you mean to interpret that DRM actually refers to the ability to use it on more than one machine - but not simultaneously - then sure, it isn't DRM. But my understanding is that DRM is to stop piracy - and that is exactly what online only does...even if it's as a side effect of gameplay requirements. Correct me if I'm wrong of course.

I see from your avatar you are an Eve player.

I'm sure you have the same concerns about CCP, especially after the WoD fiasco?

Yet, if you still play, I assume you continue to pay for PLEX? Set up your skill queue to work towards bigger and better ships?

Maybe, like that, have a little more faith?

Why did I spend over 200 pounds on a game that the company may not let me play after a number of years.

I must have gone a bit mad or was I misled !

I will learn my lesson in future.

I hope the community makes an Oolite2 with better graphics as that could be an alternative.

It absolutely is a legitimate question, and someone at Frontier knows. If not Michael himself, he can certainly find out.

The servers will have a budget assigned to last them X amount of time, based on current finances and irrespective of sales figures.

I think customers have a right to know how long they'll be able to play their game for, now that Frontier have removed all backup alternatives & made us all wholly dependent on them & their flaky servers in order to play.

Exactly! There will be no Elite 5 - this is it folks, this is the game we always wanted since we were kids.

But unlike when we were kids we're no longer living in a world of offline single CPU machines.

Frontier =/= EA

The key word was 'probably' do I need to explain that? :)

Not at all, but probability (especially low ones) does not a strong argument make.

What are you doing to help, please?

Who, me? I make barely witty remarks and sit here sipping tea chuckling quietly to myself. I also attempt to educate new players, correct misinformation and back the games I enjoy both in money and moral support. Mostly the barely witty remarks thing though.

So, please answer how long does Frontier Development plan on keeping the servers online and functional?

This has been stated multiple times, a couple by Michael himself, as long as humanly possible. since apparently we're doing the whole bold big text thing now.

Hm, weird, isn't the MMO part of the game completely broken at the moment? Hasn't it always been?

'Cause the game has been released and they aren't at all focusing on polish, which wasn't mentioned in the Newsletter... Amirite?

It might be a legitimate question in the future.

At the moment, it's not. All I could suggest is that the answer will be a lot shorter than it might have been before yesterday as FD have to start writing off the debt from chargebacks.

Lord almighty on a pogo stick.

Is that a rhetorical question? If not, it is quite useless. How would anyone without a magic crystal ball be able to answer such a question, except for "as long as we possibly can"?
