I have 212 Steam games. Every single one I can put Steam in offline mode, or steam AND uplay in offline mode, not requiring an internet connection to play.

so i understand
i have mate with the same joy as you
but i had a bad experiance
first game ( at the time i bought it i did not even know what steam or valve was)
it opened at steam account for me
but refused to give me the game
if you like i can send the disc invoice to you and you are welcome to it
for me it dead money pass 3 years ago

well anyways its clear now.

We have always said the way to play the game is online - indeed it says so in the quote of me being circulated. The choice was develop the game in the way we wanted, or not. Trying to make it offline would have made both experiences worse than we were willing to tolerate. We had to make the decision and have done so. I would say that an offline rewrite of the game is unlikely for the future. Michael

I personally think it's unrealistic to expect a completely offline version of any game these days. The pirate gaming market, whilst still alive relies heavily on offline to apply cracks to allow games to be played illegally. Any software maker in their right mind will always have a login on every launch of their game at the very least to check for authenticity of the user.

And why will thst happen again?

Because of the overused 'It's a Beta!' stop-all, coupled with the firm believe that Frontier is somehow sitting on a supersecret magical version of Elite: Dangerous we haven't seen yet, while actually the newsletter said, "We're not going to be able to produce this supersecret magical version, but here have five extra ships.".

The 22nd is going to be a very interesting day. I have not yet decided if I will show empathy that day, or if I will drink the bitter tears of dispair from those who're so easily dismissing the off-line crowd with joyous glee.

Ohh and surprise surprise the topic has been all about 20 -30 people that have stable enough connection to post up all day but apparently not stable enough to play in an online game. Shocked i really am.

Ohh sorry i forgot its about being able to play after the servers got turned off i forgot. /s

I've got an excellent connection. It doesn't mean that I can't support people who rightfully feel aggrieved or disagree with disgraceful conduct of Frontier.

Awesome! Also, this poll is interesting. The vocal minority appear to be just that, in the minority.

The poll you're referring to is heavily biased (although not voluntarily I suppose). For example I'm very disappointed and sad about absence of offline, but I will never ask for a refund, since 1) I do have a good enough internet connection to play 2) I really like the game even without offline so I won't stop playing it and 3) I've already put about 130 hours into ED, it would be ridiculous and inappropriate for me to ask for a refund. So on this poll I voted that I won't ask for a refund even though I'm not happy with FD's decision. I'm willing to bet this is also the case for many people. The only people who can legitimately ask for a refund are those who preordered the game but have not yet played it, and who bought it with the intent of playing it offline (for whatever reason). There should be another poll simply asking how people feel about the lack of offline.

As I've previously said on this thread, I want offline mode not because I need it now, but for when the servers shut down. I love replaying my old games, and with the Oculus Rift ED will be a nice "little" universe to lose myself into even in many years I'm sure.

You not think you have spent enough time posting on this thread Tim? Did you notice the stats?

Do you not feel even slightly odd about that amount of time you have spent telling us all your ohh so important thoughts on the topic?

No. If they don't deliver on something you wanted as probably #1 feature, will you?

For crying out loud, people.

Look, it's clear. It really is. FD changed the parameters of the release version.

Many of you are cheesed off. As a keen offline player of things I'm not deliriously happy myself.

And some of you think the people who aren't happy are being silly. Some of them certainly are.

And the thread is extending by pages in the time in takes me to read one page.

And frankly, nobody's saying anything now. It's all been said. And now all we've got are the same complaints - and the same dismissals of those complaints - over and over again.

FD have almost certainly seen this thread. And they haven't issued any announcements yet as to whether they're going to change their minds on this. Perhaps they will - or not.

But it definitely feels as though we're at a point now where it's nothing more than repetition and an increasing amount of sneering and sniping.

So. You've had your say; and they've had their say; and Frontier have probably heard both.

What say we choose to retain a little dignity now, and just wait and see what FD's response will be?

This is exactly what I'm affraid of. Frontier releasing a clearly unfinished version of the game must mean that they are under some sort of financial pressure.
Bad reviews mean that fewer people will buy the game. Less income for Frontier, less development, etc.

And bad reviews WILL come when the release version has the same depth and features as 3.05 has.
E : D has been getting lots of good press, based on what has been delivered AND the features known to be still in the pipeline.

I really don't see Frontier adding a fully functioning persistent universe in four weeks time.
Likewise I don't see them fixing the netcode mess in that timeframe.
This game has AWESOME potential, but in it's current form I fear it will only appeal to us diehard space-simmers.

Edit: noticed I posted in the offline discussion thread, so to keep my reply kinda on topic: I feel for those affected by this cut, but I never cared much about solo offline.

Cant let you say it. The game is not bad as it is. We will see on Gamma what will look and what we get. Before that its all expectations.
For my part i think the online will have good review but the missed offline part will have an impact on reviewer it has started yet ..... but its too expectations :)

Small group of complainers always has a louder scream. Good link to stats. This clarify than problem dont exist in reality.

Vote close().

Give it time. Most people who backed it on kickstarter and then didn't pay much attention untill after release like me won't hear about this immediately. This is just the beginning. Monday morning all the videogame news sites will exploit this and make a huge fuss about it.

The posts, the posts!!! I can't refresh my browser fast enough to keep up with the influx of all the posts! Make it stop, make it stop. Oh no no no aaaaaaaaaaaa, okay all better now.

I think if someone put up a poll on a simple YES/NO to offline play, the stats and results would be different. I've tried to put up a poll myself, but can't access the options for the poll.

I haven't weighed in on this issue here on the forums yet, but basically I think it would behoove Frontier to refund at least some of the money to those who really will find it intolerable/impossible to play online, and delete their accounts as necessary. I myself have a pretty solid internet connection that is up almost always, and I'm not going to forego playing the coolest space sim out there because of this, so "offline solo" was never a sine qua non for me. I did buy in only at the beginning of Standard Beta so my investment was more limited than those of some here.
Now I do hope that the ability to play online solo or in private groups, and switching between them at will never goes away.

The Kickstarter wasn't that long ago. If that's the reason, I suggest those items should not have been listed.

Hasn't the discussion sort of moved on from that now (the magic patch)?

FD have said there will be improvements on existing things and some stuff added - and that they intend to continue improving and adding some stuff. Pretty much covers all the angles no?

I doubt it will be limited to just game sites when there's hundreds of thousands of pounds of sales involved.

Michael,

I get having a vision is important and not compromise that vision is important but honouring your promises is equally important. Revealing massively impacting information a month from release is not the best way to go about breaking that promise. I don't use the word breaking in a way to paint you guys is a negative light because for the most part i've found you guys to be fairly up front about most things. The issue off offline play is not just about a missing feature it is actually something that will prevent a lot of people from being able to enjoy the game as you intended. Just this week a friend of mine bought ED. Cost around $100 after the conversion. He asked me if there's going to be an offline mode. I said yes. Clearly i'm a liar.

I could even have accepted the no offline thing and gotten over it if it was revealed in a manner that it honestly felt like it was as much a big deal to Frontier Development as it was to the backers. Just having a few lines in a weekly newsletter honestly felt like a massive cop out. Additionally revealing it only a month from release seems a bit cheeky and dishonest. I get that you guys were probably trying to figure you what the best way to reveal this information was but it should have been done the moment offline started to become an 'off the table' thing. I'm sure it was known about a long time ago. If not... ok fine. Just let us know.

This whole thing has left a rather sour taste in my mouth. I'm not wanting compensation or a refund. I actually really enjoy ED for the most part when i'm not having problems connecting to servers but what are FD going to do to at least make those who backed this game based on the promise of offline feel at least respected about this whole thing. I for one as a backer do not feel respected. Instead I feel like a number.... an insignificant number.

Cheers,

-Todd

Crushing! Everyone calm down now ^^

It is, never said otherwise. The game is great. Exactly why I am DEVASTATED that my brother suddenly will never be able to play, sharing his finds, ranks, purchases, tales of the frontier, etc, with me (in the same way we'd play FE2 on Amigas and do the same) as long as he lives where he is, unless he literally pays himself to upgrade local government infrastructure! LOL
