No Single Player offline Mode then?

Just had time to read the news letter, and not happy with the loss of the offline mode, will make a decision on whether to stay or go after I see if they make any announcement. It was the offline mode I was interested in and only pledged once they had said it was part of the project.

take a look at the "interview" on top of the general forum

Please Theodrid, I am not trying to defend or attack anything. I am trying to make sense. My personal POV has always been that to promise offline mode was a little bit premature and they should have said "maybe" and give regular updates if that will be possible. It has bitten FD hard. I personally don't believe in any kind of shenanigans for this. They tried it, it didn't work. It seems they tried for quite some time.

For all reasons why would FD ever come out with such information just week before premiere? It's nuts. Obviously, they didn't have choice, because announcing that during and after Premiere would be just worst of the worst.

Yeah, of course you are right on that, any 'motivation' on Frontiers part to do this is obviously lacking, they knew it would hurt, and I am quite ready to admit I am possibly wrong that they at least could have communicated it earlier, however, I am amazed that this was not apparent earlier, absolutely amazed, surely, any 'offline mode' would be 90% complete by now, and any apparent 'conflicts' would have been visible earlier? They should have at the very least, communicated three weeks ago that they were having problems with it, they must have known.

I assume it was the same reason most of us assumed the same: that the game had been (falsely, albeit possibly not maliciously) advertised as having an offline mode.
How could anyone even consider the possibility that this would have been done with malicious intent!? :S

I don't know their reasons obviously but I would accept that this was for technical reasons. They have said that the offline version would not be the same as the online version from the point of there being no dynamic updates etc.

I wonder if they came to the realisation that an offline version of the game just might not have been as much fun to play with static content?

So, who cares?

I will play ED ONLINE, and i will have fun.
And this without all whiners and liars, who only want to play in OFFLINE mode... :D:D:D:D

Bye bye....

Aren't apologists grand? And they work for free too. Every business that wants to break promises should have a dozen or so. Its great for my portfolio!

What a mature reaction ! Very constructive !
Take a break and go to bed its time young boy.

Skeleton : I would be incredibly happy. Well they have gone back on their word, regardless of any difficulties they faced with it.

Im just wondering if their perception of offline mode is different from what many of us wanted or expected in the offline version...
They talk about server issues but a standalone like Oolite they wouldn't need to touch it....

I wanted a standalone myself I could play anytime anywhere.....But I don't think it was planned this way and I didn't back it solely for the offline reason so im pretty low key....But do feel for those who did back it for that

Yes but we haven't really seen any evidence that offline was a wip either. I'd love to know how it was discovered internally that they had gone too far with the galaxy design and development when they had the 'moment' of realisation.

It's almost like they thought offline would fall into place or worse that someone was working on it (successfully)...

I suspect the poor state of the netcode of online means that they have simply run out of time and they have already stated in their share holders document that they WILL release in 2014.

Personally I would have liked them to have communicated this much earlier and with a full explanation. I can swallow the reasoning but the method of delivery was awful.

Why are Frontier Immune from criticism? Only a month before release, removing offline play and forcing DRM on people? The lynch mob would be out in full force if they were Actiblizzard or EA. Why is this any different?

Mickael stated this week with apologies. Its hard to take as it impact many. Maybe they will find a way to give something acceptable. Maybe they really cant and its a shame. We need more detail on this and i think we will get some in the next days.

You mean like the original Elite?
Yes, exactly. A game released at this time with the very limited gameplay that the original Elite game had would not be acceptable now. People want more from their games now. If the Internet had taken off earlier than it had and at the time of Elites creation the capability to play online multiplayer games existed, with the possibility of DLC etc. that Elite would have been the same game as we know it? I would say that would be very unlikely.

The way it was "revealed" (and the way it's being "handled") was either that or severe PR incompetence (just look at the news articles sprouting like mushrooms).

Sure, we should apply Hanlon's razor, but so far Frontier have looked like they knew what they were doing, and it's difficult to assume that in this particular case they didn't.
