No Single Player offline Mode then?

Frontier just became worst than EA and Blizzard

With Diablo 3, Blizzard stated from the start that the game was Online only. When EA (and Maxis) announce SimCity, it was to be Online only. I wanted to play those game, but decided not to because I do not play online (and online single player mode is just wrong).

When Frontier announce ED, they stated that it would have Offline mode for people who don't care about online. It's based on this and Frontier reputation that I decided to encourage the company by participating in the beta.

Now they decide to drop off the offline mode... one month before release!!!!???? That's not even cheating, it's false advertisment. At least EA and Blizzard made it clear from the start. Frontier just lost all its credibility in my mind.

They can only redeem themselves if they decide to give a refund to those who were tricked in paying for their OFFLINE game. If they don't, then they are worst than EA.

Does anybody know the legal position of when Frontier could pull the plug on the game, i.e. how long have we bought it for? Clearly if they closed their servers before the expansions we would have a case, but after I am not so sure. Any ideas?

Then why were the moderators saying it was, and not informed to the contrary only four days ago?

Ah the moderators. Sad fact is (and I know having been one - not for FD though) is you volunteer to do it cos you love the product you are moderating for. You are not part of the company or kept in the loop so you only go off the information you have been fed.

This suggests and we know form their reactions that they were simply not told.

More communication problems I am afraid.

And that seems to be the crux of the matter.

Look in the mirror when saying things like that. :)

I still play the original Elite on my laptop on the way to work. Will I be able to play 'Elite: Dangerous' in a single player mode without any connection to the net? Thanks.

Yes, though you will lose the richness of multiplayer.

Because the moderators are not paid employees of Frontier. As such they are not privy to such inside information that can affect the business?

I have to disagree Titus, sure they are not paid employees, but in a lot of ways they are the 'face' of the company on these boards, when they are answering that a feature is 'in' just before the newsletter it, at best, stinks, it makes them look foolish, (although people were gracious in said thread), and does not bode well.

EDIT - its hard to argue they are privy to saying it is in but not 'privy' enough to be informed it was out earlier.

So again, they are 'privy'enough to be allowed to say a feature is 'in' but not 'privy' enough to be informed of a major change in goals? - I struggle to come to terms with that.

God help who ever made this decision at FD tomorrow!

I don't think it's going to be that bad; IMHO.

This whole thing is blown out of proportion at this point. I'm willing to bet a few weeks down the road, FD pushes out a "Fix" that allows people to play in their own little non-dynamic and static universe...

For FD this simply means - a few algorithms that will allow for price rise and fall, and for certain events to appear to be dynamic - I.E. an orbis getting into a system for a gold rush... stuff that can all be assigned using greater-than and less-than algorithms.

I.E. "offline" player finds an asteroid belt rich in gold... if gold>threshold, goldrush begins.

So, no offline/solo/coop?...Really?

Hell, NO! This is unacceptable!

I didn't support and do not want to play a game that is permeable to toxicity and meta play as EVE Online and much open-ended multiplayer games around.

I contributed because I knew I would be getting a physical package with a complete offline experience. I won't play it in public "servers" or "cloud". I will continue here and fight for the offline/solo and coop modes to become again available but if FD is unmoved I will definitly request a refund.
"Yes, the game code will not include DRM (Digital Rights Management), but there will be server authentication when you connect for multiplayer and/or updates and to synchronise with the server."

Aside the original pledge, I also bought hardware specially for this game! And now what will I do with it?

You can't backtrack your word this late just because very few are willing to accept your half-baked vision. You decided to drop the options you promised your players and enforced only one view.

David and Frontier just got completely stained for me. I've chosen to ignore Ian Bell and now I know he was right. Shame on you, David Braben!
