No Single Player offline Mode then?

What happened to this comunity?! While I was not very active on this forum, I followed it closely. One of main reasons why I didn't bothering participating was it was so full of excellent ideas that I had nothing to add. And the whole atmosphere was friendly.
In the light of that, I really do not understand the level of hate the "online players" are expressing toward "offline players". While I did not expected for players who prefer online gameplay experience to be sad or to fight for offline gameplay mode, I have hardly expected that many hate against forum members that were hoping for single player offline Elite. And let me remind you that these "lesser" offline players are the people that actually helped and contributed financially and with ideas so we coul'd all get the game we want. Now "online players" got what they wanted and want "offline players" (who are rightfully upset for not getting the game they have paid for and helped to develop) to shut up. Is it so hard to understand that:
- not all people enjoy online gameplay
- offline solo gameplay was promoted, announced and promised to be part of the game by FD from the start and some people may be feeling as victims of fraud after dropping off single player - since FDs have been marketing entirely different product
- many people bought and supported the game exclusively for solo offline gameplay
- not all people have permanent internet connection and that is not only for that they live on Mars or in some strange "lesser" country, but because of various reasons including business trips
- people have strange habit of expecting to be able to play the game they have bought anywhere and anytime they like
- dependance on servers is good and "exciting" until game developer decides it's not profitable any more
- some of us hated EVE online because it was not like Elite. And now they are making Elite more similar to EVE online than we have evere wanted (with griefers and many other "exciting" online experiences and feature)
- It's not harder to make single player than multiplayer. Actually it's much more harder to make multiplayer due sync, connectivity and all other issues. There were simply no will to make offline singleplayer right from the start. And that brings us to the major problem. FDs were dishonest and were misleading the part of Elite comunity. At least some of us are feeling that way
- also it is hard to understand the need for constant internet connection over the market prices. All of that can be done offline as it was done Frontier.

Seems that with this move to abandon offline gameplay FDs not only dissappointed lots of fans and supporters but actually managed to start the war within the comunity.
Hope that "online players" will finally understand that "offline players" are not a threat for them. They just feel cheated, abandoned and disrespected.

It's 6:45 pm GMT and DB still hasn't felt the need to make a statement.

All those who felt "sure" that such a statement would be forthcoming, what do you think now?

I do not care wahat is his Statement!
Im finished with ED, David Braben and Frontier!
This was the last Crowdfunding Game i backed.
Finish!
Ende!

I'd just like to say that I feel it was bad timing by FD to announce this information.
I am due to go to the release party next weekend and was really looking forward to seeing the new content and having a great time.
Now? I feel that DB & Co will just be swamped by angry backers.

oddball we will all be just ok ^^ really looking forward to sharing a drink with you. will you join us at the pre show event ?

Giving it till tomorrow then it's refund time, there's a serious trust issue which I'm still hoping was just a silly mistake, but the silence just makes it feel more menacing and do I want to have my machine perma linked to their server (DRM or not) well frankly no and since I also use Steam that's saying quite a bit about how I feel toward FD at this moment.

Maybe the American soldier which can't play now offline must ask some lawyer in USA.
In America sometimes has more rights than every where in the World. Even BMW must pay now refund for many Mini driver, because the wrote a wrong Benzin Usage in there prospekt. (If I renember right is was only 0,4l/100 km more...). And we have here some promesing mails, a bad annoucement..... maybe it will be worth to think about it for the US Boys.
And to all emphatless celebrater...I cant refund because they don' t give refund if you dont like emphatless and dev praising communityembers.

It's quite amusing you didn't have a retort to requiring an internet connection to use google and yet how that isn't DRM...

I'm just showing that it's more than possible to require a constant connection to use a service without it necessarily being 'always-on DRM'.

I could also add: Skype and Youtube (excluding prebuffering of videos to watch later) to the list - services which require always on without being DRM.

I ignored it because it was a lame strawman. We arent talking about streaming services, we are talking about online game accounts. Do you really think they will make the servers accessible by everyone without DRM?

If you have followed the project, you know they want to keep working on Elite for a decade or more.
I know that.

I am not questioning what they WANT, I question what they CAN!

These days, with very few exceptions, I am not taking bets anymore if a software company lasts longer than five years, regardless how well they did the last decade!
I may not play ED until I die of old age, but I hoped for at least ten.
Now I know playing game will essentially be a lottery.

Its still amusing that people think they were "promised" a single player offline mode, the entire kickstarter project page is merely a plan for a game and not a finished feature list, if something does not exist it cannot have a finalized feature list. The only thing FD are legally obliged to deliver are the rewards promised and a game as true to the project idea as technically plausible/possible, offline mode, as stated, was not possible for them, so all the shouting about legal stuff is so childish and misinformed.

And this is one of the biggest disappointments for me. Its the same issue I had with Landmark. Big companies come along and make use of funding methods that have been a fantastic boon to indie developers. Big companies that arguably shouldn't need such funding streams or development models. They then screw over people by reneging on promises and put off people from using these crowd funding or early access models in future which will only hurt the indie companies in the end.

Shame on you Frontier. You're not just damaging your own reputation your damaging the reputation and future of the crowd funding model.

A lottery? Because some day the servers will close? Looks like you have an acute case of "first world problems" going there chap.

I am not entirely sure what you may be getting at here?

Well, from the lack of Braben response and the business as usual Brookes posts, it seems clear that FD are planning on being able to brazen this out.

A shabby way to treat their customers.

MB posted more answers than in the last few months maybe, and that on a weekend, really shabby
some customers are shabby too, you know..

The rewards are DRM free versions. So I guess they'll just have to make the servers accessible to everyone without serial key or any authentication, like Phl0giston suggests.

People were individually assured, right up to last friday, that they would get an offline mode. Ignoring the store blurb, the kickstarter, and the EULA, if you'd asked people directly, you would have been told you'd get offline play by a mod, the executive producer, or even the CEO of FD. That's why people thought this was a thing.
