No Single Player offline Mode then?

Michael it seems for some you cant win

If its not fully off line you offend some

if its not some fully on line pvp fest for other they will be upset

I'm glad you are doing two things

1. Sticking to your guns and making the game YOU want
2. Doing things that make it as playable as possible subject to 1

Indeed and the biggest promise is the game with the vision we set out with. We haven't taken this decision lightly, but having to hamper the game to work offline would have meant that we couldn't deliver the game we're making.
So you are making a game but not the game you promised in Kickstarter.

Is that what you are saying?
Really?

I for one would not have backed the game if there was no option for solo play, I have zero interest in multiplayer and now to find out that there is no chance of that I will endeavor to get a refund of the £200 i paid to back the game either from FD of via my CC company

Difference being, one of those things was promised, and the other wasn't. And people decided to make pledges on the basis of what was promised.

I'm seriously considering the possibility of pursuing a refund - at least down to beta level.

The way sp offline mode is outlined in the newsletter is how I always assumed it would be, and even if I hadn't assumed it, I can't for the life of me imagine why I'd be upset about it. Seems a completely bizarre thing to get so upset about...

Luckily there still is Online Solo.

I am mostly disappointed because it means no mods, cheats, and no offline galaxy in which I can fool around in.

For other players, those with poor Internet connection, this is a deal breaker and they will be wanting their money back I'm sure.

I think that as KS backers we are not well protected but we certainly should alert KS to the fact that there's a company not playing by the rule - comms and delivery of documented promises etc.

I have great Internet, but it's about the principle. Who wants to deal with a company like this?

oh what rubbish - if you bought into kickstarter and so forth on the basis that you could play offline then more fool you

Would you care to elaborate on the slightly strange logic that people shouldn't pledge based on the product that was promised to be delivered?

As mentioned in the newsletter thread the game has changed a lot since the initial kickstarter. One of the biggest changes is the importance of the the offline component to manage the galaxy and interactions. This isn't something we can translate into an offline experience as we'd effectively have to make a new game world - we couldn't share the same world and that throws out the intent for a shared universe.

Michael
This was a given from the Kickstarter: the offline mode will not be connected in any way to the evolving Galaxy all online modes enjoy together. No problem there, I want my offline E: D to be completely separated from my online one. Is the Galaxy the same for every offline player, or is it different for each and everyone - completely irrelevant! If I want to take part in the evolving online E: D universe, I play online.

Now the point is: the promised (static, non-evolving) offline experience seems to been taken away.
At some point there was talk of periodical (or very rare) Galaxy updates for offline E: D, whenever offline player wishes to download & install such. If you're just dropping these and saying "offline Galaxy will not evolve, it will be static just like Elite & FE2/FFE had", I'm a happy camper!
But if you're dropping the whole offline possibility (because the shared universe won't work with it), I feel very disappointed and betrayed.

OH MY GOD PEOPLE!!! KICKSTARTER WAS NOT A PROMISE! Kickstarter showed where they PLANNED TO GO WITH THE GAME. NOT what WAS SET IN STONE. Development hadnt even really started at that point.

I'm sorry that FDEV has to deal with people who can't read and come to terms with this.

The problem is that the galaxy mechanics all sit on the online servers. The data set and processes are huge and not something that would translate offline without considerable compromise to the vision. Trust me we didn't sit down and think what would annoy people the most! It's a choice we've had to make and so we've taken it.

Michael
Good for you. Do the rest of us minions affected by your choices get the choice of a refund?

This is how I feel also. With a fully offline version it would only have been a matter of time before the file formats were reverse engineered and we'd have been able to add things like ships, modules, hand-crafted systems, missions, etc.
I was really looking forward to flexing my 3DS Max muscles and putting old, missing Elite ships like maybe the Mamba into the game.

While i love the online feature, it's really really sad to know that there won't be an offline mode.

From the current build of the game, there just isn't any excuse for there not being an offline mode, and please, i better not read 1 single line saying "prevent piracy", or i will be dropping the project all together right now. I paid, i don't deserve to be punished for it.

So you'd have been happy if they delivered Call of Duty then? A bit of tinkering with the specifics most people can happily live with. But this was a core promise that encouraged a lot of us to back.

If it's not possible for release then fair enough, but it should still be made at some point. I'm sure people who can't play online and have bought the game would rather wait a few weeks/months more than get a refund and simply not play the game.

Again, quote the FAQ:
However it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server.
If this is not a promise, what do you consider a promise?
I could even go so far to say that this was not just a promise, that was a stated FACT.

the Elite game offline model worked already in previous versions of the game. Im beginning to think Braben wasnt the brains behind that
