No VR Development? Good Bye

Look, it’s enough that they dropped VR for on-foot gameplay.

I’ve played EDH for years now. Way, way longer solely due to VR than I would have played without it. But even with VR, the game has worn a bit thin by now. After so many years, a new infusion of gameplay was desperately needed. If there is no hope that VR will be fully integrated for all aspects of the game, I am not sure, how long I will keep playing.

I was willing to forgive Frontier the bumpy start.
I was ready to wait until they fixed the lighting, the frame rates and all the bugs.
I accepted, that I would have to wait for VR for quite some time.

But the reveal, that VR will not come to the main part of EDO at all really struck my heart.
I can’t even express, how sad and disappointed I am.
And I still can’t believe, how ignorant the devs are about the gem of a game they had created ... and how willingly they throw this gem over board.
I also feel this way.
I truely love Elite.
I don't want to go.
But right now I have much lesser desire to switch it on.

You realise that's an utter d@#k move right? Spiteful and envious, and Envy is one of the Seven deadly sins, so I hope you're feeling suitably proud of your self...

Well I'm not religious, so yeah I'm good :)

And when your simple job is replaced by robots, you won't be able to afford a PC either. So a win-win.

Well given I can't afford a new one now either, no change there then. At least I'll have more time to sit on my bum drinking beer.

Someone mentioned the people leaving and their short time registered to the forum a few pages back as if it damaged credibility to being upset enough to leave the game or was no loss to the community.

I have played this game with my wife since the base game. I have purchased probably a hundred skins and kits for myself and my wife mostly as a way to support the game as obviously skins in this game are barely even visible.

We both play VR and we are not quitting the game, but neither of us will be buying odyssey or any further skins. As it stands it sounded to me more like a we will not be further developing VR rather than a no VR for legs. If my interpretation of their stance changes, then I will continue to invest in the game, but neither of us are interested in playing if VR at some point breaks or the content in non VR sections becomes too important to progression to the point of crippling our enjoyment of it.

There are many things I've hoped for for this game for years now. I am just feeling so disappointed, new shallow feature frameworks is not what I wanted. How long has the phrase meaningful game-play come up in posts? Could we not get more advanced background sim... more advanced community goals... advanced questing that involves people working together or pitted against each-other in a way that causes player interaction and a reason to log in daily ? (not just a simple scripted on rails alien ship floating by you or a scavenger hunt for mysterious transmissions... although those were cool and all). While everyone can agree that hard grinding sucks, content that people enjoy farming with real rewards keep the player base coming back. Quests that make you feel accomplished, (not just finding a loophole in the current patch to make the most money and jump to an end game ship), reasons to fight other players with rewards and penalization... heck i always though an advanced bounty system would be really fun with better ways to track and kill people and real rewards for doing so (and even rewards for being a wanted criminal and getting away with it).

Anyway I digress, people have been asking for the same stuff for years, and yeah people have been saying legs legs legs too, but most of the people who are long haulers know where the game needed depth, and it's been obvious those are the places that would have built this game into something big. They just keep going in the wrong direction.

Anyway, I'm sad.
I love this game and the Devs they are cool folks...
but I hope they are just putting VR on pause and I've misunderstood their communication here.
When this game doesn't go the direction I want to see it go, it genuinely hurts me. Because this game matters so much to me.

ON FOOT!!!.

Odyssey is quite rubbish imo and I had a bad feeling way back that it would kill VR for this game. As long as they don't flark up Horizon's VR at the merger I will keep my ragequit piece put away in it's holster.

Don't make me use my ragequit piece..looking at you Fdev 😠

There's something very bizarre going on at FD and this particular DLC, and/or the Cobra engine.
I have to wonder if the no VR and no PS5 release relate to the same issue?
The lack of forthright comms from an executive that has the power to speak for the company is telling in itself, and no, CEO platitudes count for nothing in my book.
Facts, problems, and solutions are all I care about.

Possibly, but that would be simply speculation. Working for many years in software development, all I can do is look at the signs; a cut down feature set, multiple delays, release of an unfinished, bug ridden, product and so on tend to point to a resource management problem. What that problem might be - not enough developers overall, too many concurrent projects, too few experienced developers, poor management or a mixture - there's no shortage of possibilities, but they tend to come down to insufficient development resourced to complete work to a specific quality standard and time frame - which is the only thing we can safely conclude.

Someone will probably write a book, or there will be a magazine piece written about it all, at some stage. That we're all furiously speculating is probably evidence enough that it'll be worth their while to write it.

I backed this game in Kickstarter and I bought my rig and Rift to play the game in VR; it is a fantastic experience. I am, therefore, hugely disappointed that there is no commitment to work towards VR implementation, especially when EDO feels like it is almost VR ready as it is.

Right now, however, I would be happy with a promise from FD to work on VR support generally in the long term (even if not for legs) .

I'd be even happier if there was a one button binding to hop between VR and monitor so that you didn't have to click/scroll through various screens to switch off the 2D letterbox in VR. That solution just makes me feel sick every time. 2D projection in the headset is wholly inferior to the monitor.
