Not a question about exploration.

Since we explorers tend to spend a lot of time in a chair sitting before our monitors, I was wondering if any of you could suggest a good comfortable chair I could buy. I am currently using a chair I got from work and the "cushion" is as comfortable as a rock with a little moss on top of it. I'm looking for something with lower back support in it and a comfortable seat.

I know this question doesn't belong here, but I know you all better than the people that hang out in the Discussion forum. Thanks for any suggestions!

It's a good question. I don't have a dedicated office space currently and use the dining room table with a comfy dining room chair and a comfy pillow.
Works wonders for me.

I got an X-Rocker gaming chair in the end, quite laid back and comfortable! I am planning to fit a cover over the headrest and stuff another cushion in there as my head is way too laid back at the moment, but that is the only problem!
I left the arms off, as I have two under-desk storage cubes that I pull out to use as throttle and joystick rests.

Another bonus is if you get the inbuilt sound working, it vibrates when you are about to jump into hyperspace - wakes you up! :)

X-Rocker sounds interesting. My ex's son had the one without a pedestal and he used it all the time. It didn't last very long before it started falling apart though. I really need to sit in the chair before I buy it though to feel if it is actually comfortable. I don't buy shoes without trying them on first, I don't buy chairs without sitting in them first! =D

Depending on your budget IKEA has some decent office desk chairs. They don't sell the one I'm using anymore, but I wish that I'd bought 2. Mine is about 5 years old, and may need replacing soon. I think it was about $45 on sale!! And is as comfortable as my $600 office chair at work, which is custom ergonomic btw.

Best for long exploration season:

You know it's funny you mention chairs, I was just talking to my girlfriend about my gaming "chair" last night....

Currently I just have a Staples office chair at a desk, but it's a rather nice one. I've learned over the years (by owning lots of junk chairs) that cheap chairs do not last and are not comfortable, and that it's usually better to spend a bit more on something decent.

However, I'm thinking about building myself a nice simulation pit of sorts. I've wanted to make one for years as I play a lot of flying and driving sim games, and now with Elite space sim games too. If I build what I want then it's going to have a nice sports car bucket seat (probably a Subaru Impreza seat from a scrap yard) with the rear surround speakers mounted up near the headrest. It's just one home improvement job on a list of other jobs.....

10 years ago I got my cousin a nice comfy office chair (from Argos), in white leather, with pine armrests and 'spider' for the castors. It is so comfortable her Mother fell asleep in it (and she normally finds sleeping in chairs to be difficult). While it looks a bit tatty now, it is still as comfortable, and not looking to be replaced any time soon.

After years of generic cheap rubbish that ends up wobbly or sitting at an odd angle, 18 months ago I invested in a DX Racer gaming chair.....the boring black one rather than loud colours :)
It was pretty heavy to put together but there's no wobble, really well made and its really comfy.
Cost me around 380AUD I think cos we tend to get ripped down here, but even so it was worth it. It's pretty close to having a quality sports car seat mounted on some castors.
I will say this though.....the fact it can lie flat is a gimmick that I never use (I'd sooner lie on a bed). I'm figuring it will last me well over 10 years. It's so good I bought the wider one for my father in law who has alot of back issues, and he loves it also....happily sits in it all day.

Not sure if this really helps anyone.
Currently building myself a gaming pod/ cockpit chair type thing. Everything is done pretty much apart from the chair. Been pulling my hair out looking for the right office chair I can butcher to slot into the chassis with no real luck, everything i like is hundreds of pounds.
Anyway, while rummaging around in a breakers yard looking for a wing mirror I came across an old jaguar wreck with leather seats. Asked the guy how much for one and he said tenner if i get it out myself or 20 quid for one of the lads to do it!
So few days I go pick it up, bargin and so comfy, wouldn't recommend you do this with fabric car seats cos you cant clean em.
So you know, sometimes worth looking into odd places for that perfect seat

paid £130 for my chair after years of bargain basement offerings, was truly worth it.

My last chair was like the Verona in black. It was good while it lasted. There was a seam that ran from one side of the seat to the other (left to right) that really bothered me though. By the time I got rid of it, it felt like I was sitting on a thin ridge of metal. It actually made my right leg go to sleep.

AndrewF, There is a company here in the USA that sells gaming chairs that look almost exactly like you suggested. It is one I am considering.

Arhoos, that is comfortable?? It doesn't look like it has much in the way of padding.

Mengy, I had thought about getting a captains chair from a van and having it mounted on a swivel base, but I don't know how to fabricate or weld. lol Captains chairs from vans are SO comfortable!!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I really appreciate it! I'm gonna go out this weekend and go shopping. Hopefully I will find one.

I'm sitting on an old Staples office chair, the padding has completely collapsed and I have a memory foam pad to protect my backside. It does the job, but I'm really also looking for something better!

I recently bought a Maxnomic gaming seat as a treat to myself and had to return it after a week as it was so uncomfortable. I flew in it for 11 hours straight for my latest Sadge A* run and after that length of time I awoke with bruises where the lip of the chair had been digging in to the backs of my legs! How they manage to market these as gaming chairs I really don't know!

I would advise steering clear of anything that advertises using a "cold foam" construction as the foam is clearly designed for durability rather than comfort. I'm really disappointed in the comfort of the chair, thankfully their returns policy is outstanding and they refunded me immediately.
