Not sure what to do anymore - Grinding vs Fun?

Tip 1: never grind unless you are enjoying it. Always choose fun

Tip 2: dont die. Choose your fights wisely. Run from what you cant handle ;)

Having survived World of Tanks, I'm done with all that smells of grinding just for getting the next thing up the ladder. It totally zaps all enjoyment of the game. Just play the game, and sooner or later the new stuff will be available to you. Went with that attitude into War Thunder, and have done pretty well. No grinding, just doing the Realistic Battles dogfighting in whatever plane I felt like playing. Now I nearly got them all.

Doing the same with Elite. I'm not racing ahead to any particular new ship or gear or whatnot. Right now, I got this place I call home and doing all kinds of missions to get nice and cozy with the local Federation aligned governments on my home system and nearby systems. And I'm having a blast doing it, with plenty of occasions of 'just one more mission until dinner/sleep' and before I realize, a couple of more hours have gone by. I may not make terribly huge amounts of coin, or kill more pirates than syphilis. But that do not matter. I'm having fun in my little Cobra mk III. It is getting slowly but surely pretty well equipped as well.

New ship? Sure. In due time, at the appropriate junction. I'm not in a hurry. And I'm keeping my Cobra.

Not a grind? Flying from object to object pointing your ship at it while waiting 'Scanning, Scanning' is not a grind?

Yeah that is a bit of a grind but that's not what I said

This is what I said: "Look at Galactic map - Jump to an "unexplored" yet inhabited system - fire off the advanced discovery scanner - repeat."

I didn't say mess around scanning each planet or even the star. System scan - move on.

Agreed. Just do something else. Either in-game or out.
The game started feeling very grindish for me, so I'm taking a break and playing some other games.
Still checking into the forums and waiting for an interesting patch.

Only if you are "Elite" do you like the boring grind and therefore "Dangerous"ly imaginative as you pretend you are Malcolm Reynolds and crew flying your Firefly. Otherwise you are just a well informed seasoned gamer with common sense and other things to do in life.

I enjoyed grinding rares before the cap, I got to do it one time then it was nerfed. Then I found imperial slaves, I started to grind it. I got 1 run then they nerfed it.

Grinding is what Elite games are about. All of them. They simulate what would be to work as a Commander in this universe.
Some people think it feels like work and I think it's true, but for some people (like me) who enjoy this kind of experience, that's not a bad thing.
Others might find it tedious and that's ok. There are games for all tastes out there.

I did a bit of trading a couple of days ago. Enough to get an Asp, but when I got it, I realised just how much it's going to cost to equip it to be anything like a match for my cobra in anything but cargo capacity. So I spent a few more hours trading with the Asp and then mothballed it and bought a fully geared up Viper. I'm now just enjoying fighting in conflict zones where there's always plenty to do even though the money isn't great, not even as good as bounty hunting but doesn't involve lot's of hanging around. I've resigned myself to not worry too much about cash as the big ships probably aren't that great anyway. Hopefully more content will come along to make combat oriented playing more viable.

You see this person has understood the reality of it.

Play the game to have fun and not to rush to be a billionaire.

I am not losing ships on nav beacon bounty hunting, except when I am drunked. I got fully pimped viper and enought money to buy lakon 7, but I am holding back as I am still enjoying the hunting.

Ive just died and had all my money dissappear, i had around 480k with a Cobra Mk. I restarted, had enough insurance and all my money is gone :-(

The current and biggest problem with this game that I personally see is in the title of this thread; Grind or fun?
They should coincide, to a certain extent, obviously few games have arguably perfectly balanced it (WOW obviously did a good job at some point in development).

The counter argument to this is "You choose what to experience!". Gamers, if not people, are wired to seek progression. It happens inevitably.
If ALL paths(grinds) to make progression are not competitive, timely (No, I don't mean super quick, don't take this out of context), and FUN - then those paths fall under criticism.
In the case of this game, there IS NOT a path that fits the above requirements.

Give me an example of a path that has the following attributes: PROGRESSION/WAGE COMPETITIVE, TIMELY, AND FUN.
There aren't any currently.
