[Not] Yet another circumnavigation

Excellent last update, you're crossing some awesome terrain - really makes me want to get out there again myself. Is it my imagination or are you really starting to enjoy yourself down there now? [yesnod]

CMDR Florenus stopped by. Perfect timing for a picture at or pretty close the South Pole of Olelbis 3 a!
Thank you.
Thanks CMDR, It was great to meet you!

Lone SRV is not easy to find on a moon this size, but fortunately for me it was night there...

Couple of minutes for the Press at the South Pole:
Lights... Camera... "A few words for all the fans out there?"

Fireworks! Please, anybody?

The trip started with 360KM on the odometer, that calculates to roughly 2.000KM drive up to here. I'm honestly amazed at myself :)

Now the tricky question: what's the right way back?

Off to lunch, I earned it

Day 9: The Review (last post for today, promise)

No daylight today :-( And the planet later disappeared completely below the horizon. A dark day. But still not as bad as other CMDRs hat to cope with - lucky me!

Guarded cargo and escape pod. Why won't they let me help them??

Another crashed Ship! Again, how stupid to not let me help! Or, perhaps, Pirates? Stuff to hide? Goes well with the other criminals hiding everywhere on this moon!

One of the many installations, down here close to the south pole. Wonder whether this concentration down here is due to the rather flat landscape, compared to the rest of the moon?

Ha, another crashed satellite! Despite the guards I could get close enough to do a scan and extract some -hopefully- valuable data.

Oh joy! finally I'm about to meet another CMDR! Quite a relief after all those days on my own

As I said before, lots of stuff concentrated down here in the south

And some deviation from the flat landscape

Was already missing that one: a criminal in hiding!

Then I hit my Mark, as posted already. After some due celebration during lunch break I decided to still continue a bit, to start the long way back.

Which way to go? Since I came down here following more or less the -60° Longitude I calculated that I should simply go west (whatever that means down here) until I meet the 120° line and then simply (!!!) follow that back to the north!
Could anybody please check whether this sounds right?

Off we go!

Another installation. This time I tried to jump straight across, not loosing any time, being in a hurry and all that. Failed miserably but could make it out of the fenced area just in time before the alarm went of.

CMDR! Don't become careless! Something shouted in my head immediately. Rightly so …

-83° 120° This is where the way back home starts:

Not my ship

It's getting interesting again!

There is Bridge, how considerate! You're most welcome :)

Making good speed - going downhill

Interesting terrain again, indeed:

More occupied escape pods, sadly guarded again :-(

Soon thereafter I reached the next stretch of rough terrain. Will continue from here tomorrow. Called in the Ship and went to bed

Odometer:

The Map:

Looks like I will miss out the worst parts over there! So I wonder whether my calculation is right? Apparently the rough area lies right between 120° and -60°! What a relief, I made a very lucky decision by starting the way I did :)

Finally, StatusDisplay tells me 1.400KM to go, sounds about right

Thanks!

Oh, and @Nick Sticks, while I have your attention.... I just read about your 'pirate incident' on Eol Prou FB-I b25-50 1 and I wonder:
Wouldn't it be sufficient to just dismiss the ship? Or would the pirate then hunt the SRV?

My T-7 is getting filled with salvage (and occupied escape pods) as well and I don't want to follow your example ;-)

I'm not sure, it's possible they will go after the SRV if they see you - read later on when I have to deal with something just like that when I do something silly in my SRV....
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...looking-rock?p=6425299&viewfull=1#post6425299

I would say the rule is don't give the pirates a chance and dismiss your ship as soon as you leave it.

I have come to the conclusion that ED players are clinically insane.

I'm in the right place then.

Welcome, Dice Man! :)

Day 10: Getting the hang of it

Sadly, no daylight again. But it seems a little bit brighter than yesterday.

A bit later parts of the landscape even seem to be lit up by some kind of daylight. Makes the lower parts appear even more dark and scary.

First Canyon of the day. What does the map look like, btw?

Ok, some rough terrain ahead!

Downstairs, half way through:

And out again:

Hardly time to catch breath and we stop at the next one:

Quite a bit further eastward and a bit down already. Still no obvious path across, although, over there perhaps?
Looks all so soft from the distance but getting closer reveals all the fine nasty details and suddenly there are holes in the ground everywhere ...

What is this installation doing down here?? There must be a way to get there, or not? Descent continues ...

Nearly at the bottom

At the bottom. That's a highway down here. Will it lead to the factory?

Dead end unfortunatley. But was heading north. The wall at the end was not too hard to climb up. Then I reached a plateau and felt like "Yes!" only to realize that I was just one floor up and still somewhere in the middle of that valley:

Bit I 'only' had to get onto that left ridge and follow that towards the northern canyon wall.

And then climb out.

Done! There we are. And the next ditch already in sight.

Some flat terrain in between. I really enjoyed the twilight that I totally have no idea where it comes from but puts everything in a nice soft light. Makes the ice look green.

As promised, the next ditch ahead:

Through and out again:

From there on it was driving in the open for quite some time. Not totally flat though, lots of craters of various sizes. Some to cross, some to better go around

Ah, look! I found something! (but no ships today)

This happened way too often, sigh

Finally another ditch, easy crossed

And yet another one

And time to call it a day.

Where are we?

I think I stopped before the second of the two thin parallel ditches. Something much bigger is coming up next!

And this: 358Km to the equator. Seeing the whole distance to my starting point is way to depressing right now ;-)

The crossings slow things down quite a bit. But the challenges are welcome deviations. There is only one thing I'm afraid of right now that might prevent me from going all the way round: I have pre-ordered X4 and that will come out next Friday already!!!

Oh, and a final note:
THE SRV IS JUST PLAIN AWESOME!
:)

Great visual storytelling :)

on the side note, I can't help to wonder how would this moon look like with all the changes to ice planets that didn't make it to Chapter 4.
I was actually really looking forward to this and rarely visited ice moons, "saving" them for later.

I almost forgot about that!
If you'll get distracted by that game, you'll need to make up for lack of circumnavigational progress by writing something about it (I'm not buying until I read some good reviews) ;)

Day 11: Slow Progress

Daylight, that's great for what is lying ahead!

Ship dismissed and lets go. Small ditch ahead

Another valley to cross

Already on the way into the BIG DITCH. Looks like there are ways through

At least partly. Then I had to climb some steep walls, to reach this nice plateau - somewhere in the middle? Or not yet? Hard to say

Carefully crossing some ridges, still not on the other side

Still not through

One of those again, hiding in plain sight

And done

[strike]
I did record the whole crossing as video. It's about 30 minutes and unfortunately way to big a file to have it uploaded somewhere :-( slow internet connection over here
[/strike]

There I am. Next couple km seem straightforward.

What followed though was a mixture of flat and fast areas, some more rough terrain and some more valleys or perhaps big craters to cross. Overall ok but slowing me down more than expected

Lots of stuff along the way: Crashed Ships, Satellites, some installations, ships …

In total: 2 occupied escape pods collected

Stop at the next small canyon

Didn't make it across the equator yet, 133km to go

Any comments, critique, suggestions on my driving style? I guess I do practice what is referred to as 'flyving' in that video to some degree.

:)

Great pics (especially https://www.flickr.com/photos/162045585@N07/46030019422/) and great video. Truly very beautiful moon, and as i said in other comment i love the blue ice and tried (and will try when 3.3 hits) to find similar icy moon to circumnavigate. :)

Its always crazy to see SRV driving "flying" - my driving is very casual and "on ground" (flying when it's very flat, and usually it's not on small moons).

Do you have a pointer to the Ice changes in 3.3? I don't remember reading about this.

They postponed it, i think no changes to icy world in 3.3.

But still i will try to find similar world (waiting for 3.3 to hit) - my experience is that its not easy to find very whitish or blue icy moon.

That was a pretty damn epic bit of terrain traversal and you're driving style is fine (excellent use of handbrake to tackle rough landscape in short, controlled sections and ability to keep the SRV in a straight line on ice). If you ever get the chance/inclination I'd really recommend getting some form of head tracking device (I use TrackIR) 'cos it really helps to be able to see where you're going when you've got the SRV tilted down at 90° but otherwise, yeah - you're doing great! The only other thing I'd say is maybe not to lean back so much when you're coming in for a landing after a big jump - a) it means you really can't see where you're going and b) isn't actually necessary, you can land fairly flat (even font wheels first slightly) and then simply bounce back up and keep on travelling (assuming that's what you want to do). Of course if you're deliberately air braking because you're trying to come to a stop then fair enough. But also ... whatever works for you (which it clearly is).

If you watch something like my Pomeche Ridge Challenge demonstration run you'll get an idea of a) how handy head tracking is and b) the sort of angle I tend to land and bounce at (mostly level or slightly front wheels first, rarely if ever leaning back).
