Notice to Devs. Do or die. Exploration.

SC is vaporware at the moment (I am a backer). Please do not ever bring that game up unless you want to give people a good laugh. Also when it does come out, maybe in 5 years time if we are lucky, they will only have a few systems to explore, so yep look good, not.

Much lower altitude in that first image, pointing into the sun.

Not wanting to appear too defensive on behalf of FD, but we haven't seen what the landable atmospheric planets will be like at lower altitudes yet, probably similar to the first image. (To clarify, the atmospheric effects, including dust, will not have been included at this stage.)

It seems OP just got out of Kindergarten.

Seriously I was expecting someone slightly mature but from his arrogance and constant insults seems in in the wrong place. :p

I would have thought that LOL was an acronym and not a word per say.
But the Oxford English dictionary has it now listed as a verb.

Mind blown.
[h=3][/h]

Hm...think I may need to rethink my opinion of the Oxford. I suppose the spoken acronym is technically a verb, but I would probably have gone with 'acronym, slang' myself. What a shocker, as you say. Makes me want to bang my head on something to make myself so stupid I won't care that the human race is going down the toilet any more. :( Meh, been one of those days.

Three things to start with. If you don't do these... that's it.

1: The debeigeifacation.
2: Add reflectivity from orbit.
3: Add transparency to ice worlds and shine to metallic worlds. Along with the lighting effects.

At the moment this is a cartoon game. When I look at a pizza, it has more 3d ness than a typical world. Everything is totally matted. Get rid of that first. Because you know what? EVERY world that is in horizons looks like a cartoon. We pay extra to land in blended soup. Try and fix it. Please.

Is there at least an option to keep light level...zzzz. Nope. Not in the menu, and not in the beta.

That's my first and as I consider it... Absolute prerequisite after the scripted thargoids come along.

Multiple light sources and reflectivity from orbit and below. EASY. Don't even try to fiddle with exploration before you have done that. Ill pass the flame to the others now. Those guys who genuinely love the game... and want to see the smallest of touches. - lads - hit them hard. Keep it simple as can be.

^^^^This, 100% agree!

Come on FD...Yes, you can :)

Exploration. One of the big parts of the game. Arguably the biggest, consider that over 99% for the galaxy is yet to be explored, so I would say this was pretty stonkin' huge.

Agreed Dale, arguably the biggest, yet received some of the least amounts of development over the past three years. That right there is a huge reason for a lot of the negativity regarding exploration, and I really hope it contributes to Frontier's decision as whether or not to develop it further. MUCH further preferably, to match all of that immense gameplay potential which Elite's Milky Way possesses.

There are lots of combat space games out there, but only a handful of non-combat space games and none with a virtual simulated Milky Way in it, and exploration in Elite has the huge potential to really make the franchise stand out as something unique and unequaled in the game industry. It's a wonderful opportunity to set themselves apart from the competition in ways that no one else could easily match for a very long time. Frontier needs only develop it to create something incredibly special and uniquely appealing.

"Ice world" are supposed to be regular planets covered in ice, not entirely made from ice. No way they can be "transparent". And, of course, any significant mass of ice is never transparent in the first place, from a distance it just appears entirely white.

Fair enough.

I am not some SC fanboi, but comparing the 2 renederings, SC comes out on top.

Here is a moon in SC:

Agree with this, but form the other hand what can you already do with exploration?

They should probably have a bit more extreme cases like that fast orbiting moon, so huge stars (bigger than yw canis majoris), elliptical orbits...

Aehmm. Consoles. They have been killing gaming for quite some time. Every time the developer says no compromise was made because of consoles, scores of kittens are burned alive, because it is a great lie.

Given a choice between the devs and the armchair experts, I'll take the devs. Thanks.

Right.

No more Star Citizen discussion - there is a nice cosy thread for that in the Off Topic section.

And no more "Console Conspiracy" posts either - we are all one big happy ED family!

Please stay on the OP topic of 'Improvements to Exploration or else...'. Thanks.

Are they in game shots or images of what they want it to look like? Can you land on it yet? Or is it all.speculation on whether it will look like that.

Anyway, back on topic. Pretty sure FDev will be looking at exploration mechanics pretty soon. No need to worry yet.

I'm not sure this post really helps.

We all agree more love for exploration would be good. We love know that the beigification happened, probably due to graphics constraints (cant mention the obv thought in my mind why because of above post. But Why else would they have done it? For realism.. plenty of things in this game not real) .

But hopefully we will get a morsel thrown to us.

...snip...Understand, though, that these thoughts and discussions internally may or may not happen so I really want to stress that part...snip...

This is phrase gives me the willies.

Way back in days of yore the much lamented "Consilio forum" codex contained many articles that could make you weep with joy at the thought of them coming true. So it was written, so it has yet to come... :D A very tongue in cheek way of saying please - see all those really really good bits that you're not putting in? I bet those are the bits that players really want / need :D :D

It was an unintended result of them tweaking various bits n bobs in what makes up planets if I remember correctly. It's probably a very difficult one to fix quickly, I'd expect huge amounts of rewriting various bits of code, then checking all that internally etc would take up a massive amount of manhours. If they've been smart they'll have working on getting things ready to work into the post 2.4 updates as they update other game mechanics.
