Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

Yee-ouch. That is the reason i fitted a pair of heat sink launchers to my asp, and also turn off every module i don't need to save heat.

^^ definitely something worth considering, even if this means somewhat shorter jump range. To get killed like that in the middle of nowhere, while carrying carefully assorted data for hundreds of visited systems would really, really suck.

What modules are safe to keep switched off ?

Away from trouble (ie, more than 500ly from inhabited space where interdictions don't occur) i turn off all weapons, shileds, SCB (yes i have one as well) power distrubutor, AFMU (keep that powered down until you need it, as it will try to repair things you might not want repaired) fuel scoop (only turn it on to scoop) and one heat sink. Never turn your thrusters off while in supercruise, as you'll get an emergency drop and suffer damage, probably goes without saying that you want to keep your FSD powered up at all times.

Generally in SC my heat hovers around 38-39%

One thing to note, if you turn your shields back on in SC, when you drop into normal space they will be fully powered. Useful for dropping into ring systems.

I am now starting to look more closely at my route on the galaxy map: if the stars in multiple star systems are drawn apart, I assume it's safe to jump. If they are not (e.g. I see only one star while there are several mentioned in the description), I am taking a detour. With the hull at 7% I cannot afford risks.

Pretty epic journey, good luck getting back home!

Thanks guys :) This is the challenge I wasn't really expecting: just few days ago I was bragging how I've never had any damage on my exploration trips except from one NPC interdictor within the inhabited space. Guess I should've kept my mouth shut lol.

I remain unafraid of binary stars. The vast majority of them are nowhere near close enough together to kill you, and the few that are, 99 times out of a hundred you're in a position where it doesn't affect you. Regardless of not encountering a similar situation, I think I'm going to acknowledge the threat and pick up a heat sink when I next get back to port . . .

I don't know about you guys, but i am starting to hate M class star systems. I just found my first red giant and again the whole system is just dead, cold icy planets.
And when i look at my current route - i have 3-4 more such systems to visit...

I am going to make some tea and just sit back in my Hauler during the scanning.

Red giants shouldn't usually be so bad - the habitable zone around a star depends on both its surface temperature and also its size. Red giants aren't very hot, but they are very large!

Think of an M star as a candle. An ordinary dwarf M star is just one candle, but a giant M star is a whole wall of candles, so you should feel a bit of heat from it... :)

Why even bother with Class Ms? My tactic is to honk the horn, scan until I hit an icy, then leave.

Because this is not the way i do things. ;)
The Empire needs some stellar data and i am out there to gather and deliver it to them. It does not matter if i like it or not.

EDIT: Aaand the next system (G star), almost had me spilling my tea all over the cockpit. I found my first Earth-like world. :D

Nice! I always have the best best luck finding good planets around G's and K's :)

Side Note: What is the most inhospitable planet that the game can claim to be terraformable? I found a High Metal Content Planet, 96% CO2 atmosphere, 182 atmospheric pressure with a surface temp of 816k. That doesn't seem a very good choice for terraforming to me. Then the next planet out also a candidate, but has .01 surface pressure ????. Then the 3rd planet a water world, isn't terraformable???????

I think once i found an HMC/CFT planet which atmosphere was something sulfuric. Unfortunately i do not remember and i lack of detailed notes at the moment.

Fair enough. :p. I used to be an explorer like you, but then I put an Advanced Discovery Scanner on my ship. All sense of being a completionist explorer dissolved in that moment . . .

Well, i do use ADS myself. It is easier to scan the system and have a glance if it is the system you are looking for. Then - it is the choice what to do, and this is a choice everyone makes for himself. ;)
Sometimes i wish i shouldn't agreed on that job. Most of the time is boring, but then you find something interesting which you haven't expected to be there and you are happy, circling with your seat as there is not enough space in the cockpit to run around. :D

*ahem* Or herself. There are women on this forum, too, thank you very much!

Anyway, gotta give you a hand for the serious amount of commitment it takes to play like that.

While we're on the subject of giant stars and their effect on where the habitable zone sits, here's a funky planet I stumbled across while mucking around scanning the Hyades around an orange giant, Hyadum II. Nearly 13AU Semi-major axis (although admittedly eccentricity is quite high)
