Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

Yeah, cockpit in the Asp isn't too bad. But some of us aren't funded by our rich daddy Grind :D

Yesterday had some luck in all the boredom, 5-6 waterworlds, maybe there will be some payouts when I head back to civilization after 1.1
It's quite beautiful in the direction of the Lagoon nebula I have to say.

Good question? Are they a wise investment for exploration? Especially as there's talk about heat being more likely to damage modules?

My understanding is that that part has been delayed to 1.2 and was about weapon fire could overheat and damage modules.

How do you guys deal with attrition on these long trips? The hull and modules experience wear when you travel a long distance in Supercruise, don't they?

Weapons heat, or heat in general? ie: If you mess up fuel scooping, will the heat be more likely to damage modules? So if an AFM all the more worthwhile?

from my experience, if you mess up fuel scooping, it will damage hull and modules, but modules very little. i did same mistake, hull is on 34%, modules over 95%. so i don't see point of carrying afmus although i know they don't add any weight.

Meh, thanks for the warning.

Welcome.

---------------

So the repair tool or 'AFM' after much testing - I conclude for exploring it is useless.

Exploring damage is based on heat and emergency drop out of SC - I'm not going to enter into inhabited space, as you can avoid interdiction.

Hull damage accumulates far faster than any module, the detailed surface scanner and radiators take zero damage.

at 0% hull (DEAD) my worst effected module the canopy was at 24%

So there we have it - about as effective as a juggler is, in zero g :D

Couldn't the AFM help the canopy?

And again, we know FD are introducing heat damage to modules (rather than hull) so might it not be a wise investment for 1.1 / 1.2? They are saying weapons heat will damage modules, but it could just be heat in general?

My modules are currently around 94%, hull at 95%. As AFM has no weight, and we usually have internal slots to spare, I don't see why we should not take them. What else would you do with that space?

I tested this in 1.1 - Not sure what good a 100% canopy is when the hull is gone though?

Interesting! ?? what ship are you flying ?

seems plenty of discoveries is wrong... i know for a fact and seen screenshoots for it that people are credited for first discovery without scan... only ping. and i was in systems that have red dwarfs with icy planets 460K+ Ls that have been scanned 3k LY away from sOL... hard to belive this...

Well that's just dandy.
I upgraded to 1.1, and suddenly found myself in Sheffield hub, instead of Nikolayev dock. For some reason my home port was renamed, I don't want to live in Sheffield, yuck.
Everything else seems to be the same, so I went to access universal cartographics, 1 minute of loading later the game crashes, producing 3 crash reports. That's going well.
.
Second attempt it loads a page. I want to look at what I scanned, so type in Hip 62462 in the galaxy map, wasn't the first to scan it, fine, but why doesn't it show the planets? Just empty spheres.
.
I select sell page. 30 sec wait, window pops up, starts typing out, extremely slow: Congratulations, you are the first to discover ... etc. after 20 seconds of watching text slowly appear, the game crashes again. Hmm is it safe to sell data at all atm?
.
Third attempt, crash to desktop within 5 seconds of accessing universal cartographics. Never mind, I'll play something else.

Yep! I have been exploring less than 300 LY away from Sol, less than 30 LY from civilized space, and have been getting multiple First Discoveries. That is hard to believe too.
I'm afraid the whole First Discovery data may be messed up.

On my way out from the twilight zone I've seen one systems where all planets, including small icy one >150.000 LSs away from the star have been tagged as discovered by cmdr. Who in their right mind would want to fly so far to look at another boring dead snowball, and earn few measly credits to DSS it? Yet, people do strange things, so...

I've also been in a system where different planets were discovered by two players so I tend to believe that pingers aren't getting credits after all. Perhaps I am wrong. I'd like to see that screenshot, if it's not too much trouble for you mate.

Not necessarily, once you are outside the ring of civilized space, even nearby, you still have a good chance of hitting systems where nobody has scanned anything. Many exploreres just head out at full speed for the first part of their jouney, just pinging systems as they go looking for interesting stuff. Many explorers are sightseers, not surveyors, and only get serious about scanning when at their destinations. Now 1.1 adds first to discover bonus, maybe we will see more surveying going on.

I would ticket that, could be you are in a rare situation - also try fling to a different system to sell.

Has anyone been to the Blinking nebula? (BD+50 2869) Only I was apparently the first to discover it, but my galaxy map in 1.1 is not letting me view the system, I can see I discovered places nearby first.... anyway I'm too far away to go and look for at least a week, could you see if I'm logged against it?

Many thanks
