Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

I am approching the core of our galaxy and I have a lot of problems with the route planner of the galaxy map. I need to plan each jump one by one if I don't want the route planner to be stuck (and the game to run slowly).
Is it normal or not ?

It's the same on mine, I managed to plan routes up to 3 jumps - which is what the old planner used to handle (~100ly) which is better than nothing. When you get clear of the galactic plane it improves, just move up or down a bit and you may notice a significant difference.

When is a black hole, not a black hole?

When it's a black gas giant...

Found two of them orbiting a black hole, worth a surface scan I guess.

Could you post their surface temperatures and masses please?
(and incidentally the surface temp of the black hole)

Sure, the black hole:

Solar masses: 2.8633
Surface Temp: 0.00K

First gas giant:

Earth masses: 100.84
Surface Temp: 10K

Second gas giant

Earth masses: 27.3
Surface temp: 2K

Both with atmosphere 74% Hydrogen, 25.9% Helium.

Hello everyone, first of all thank you for all the cracking information (and interesting science) that people have posted, it's a great read so far for a fledgling explorer like myself.

For about a week now I've been out and about in my Explor-Hauler seeing what I can find. Started with a trip to the Pelican nebula and I've just arrived at the bottom of the Elephant's Trunk. I must say it's been enormously enjoyable just footling around seeing what's there.

My route planning had been pretty aimless so far so my question is are there things I should be doing to make better use of my time? For example does it pay to target certain types of star or concentrate on nebulae?

I think it's been almost two months since I left for space, but I were never more than 7000ly away, I've just done a long loop and had too much work in between. Finally I'm within 1500 ly of sol, going back to cash in. Very curious to what kind of money I'll see. When I started it was probably pre 1.1 so things have changed :)

Now am I understanding correctly that selling my data in certain places could get me towards a Sirius pass? (in that case I guess I could arm up on the edge of space and go specific places to sell) I saw that mentioned.

At what point do you 'bottle it' and head for home ?

I've just started getting into exploration properly though I did a few small trips in gamma and right at the start of release.
This guide has been a great help.

I did a trip where I started by heading straight up a 1000ly from shinrata and then made my way across the top of the galactic plane to the Traikaae Nebula (which was hard work, few stars). By the time I got to the nebula I had some damage, from lack of concentration, I think powerplant was 87 % and hull about 90% so I went home.

The next trip I tried to be more careful. I headed out to NGC 7822. I had two emergency stops caused by black holes but in both cases I was doing minimum speed and there was hardly any damage. But then after I moved on I had one lapse of concentration, minor heat damage but the canopy cracked so I headed straight home.

On my current trip I thought I would head towards the core via nebulas. I'm about 9000 LY's out atm. Neutron stars have been my downfall this time. I've emergency stopped 4 times. Three because of Neutron stars. (I need to remember to get well away before turning towards the next system on my route). My Hull is still 95%. Powerplant is 92% but I'm worried about the canopy cracking again so I've turned for home again.

I may be being over cautious but I can't bear the idea of loosing all the data!

So I'm interested in knowing how far other CMDR's push it damage wise before you think 'enough's enough' and head for home ?

Yes - if you sell enough data to any station which belongs to a faction who can give you a pass (like the Sirius Corporation do for Sirius) to raise your rank with them to Allied that will do.
You probably have much more than enough to do that with the Sirius Corporation, so you could sell some of your data to any of their new outposts and then sell the rest to one of the major factions or wherever. I'm probably going to sell my next bunch of data at Shinrarta Dezhra to raise my standing with the Pilot's Federation.

Interesting find for me; I've narrowed the main habitable zone down to between 314K and 224K blackbody temperature. I had thought that Earth-like worlds would occupy a narrow band within the main habitable zone at the point where the temperature is similar to Earth's, but I just found an Earth-like world with only 227K blackbody temperature, right on the cold end of the habitable zone.

Are close binary systems safe now? Has anyone been badly burned & damaged after jumping in since 1.2?

Not me, and I did jump into a close one, started scooping fuel immediately even before "stopping", the temperature rose slightly but quickly stabilized, I could leave without taking any damage.

My last nasty encounter with a binary was just after 1.1. I've jumped into several systems since 1.2 that have been pretty close binary stars but without issues.

Having said that, I've only had a bad experience of binary systems a couple of times since beta. Maybe I've been lucky.

It seems like all the exploring, bounty hunting and trading is more viable when you are in a bigger ship, like an Asp or something, otherwise i just don't see anything worth the time to do in a sidewinder.
