Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

Question is a jump range of about 32 light years enough to get you to Sagitterius A the core of the galaxy? I don't feel comfortable going without shields so my jump range is a bit lower due to that.

On an added note, you can't crash into celestial bodies, so don't be afraid to get too close.

Actually with neutron stars thats not so true ... sure you survive but you take some nasty wear and tear. With neutron stars ... don't try and get up close to see what they look like, they will remain a tiny dot. Getting out the gravity well after dropping out at full tilt is damagin to say the least ... do it more than once and your grand journey might end prematurely.

Yes. Its the outer rim and the upper and lower reaches of the galaxy that require you strip your ship right down. The view though from the very edges is worth the effort.

Regards the rewards for exploration ... alien civilizations ... more interaction ... would make exploration better. At the moment its a very lonely calling ... there are some who have made some excelent roleplaying of their adventures on these forums, but it would be nice to see frontier picking up the batton and actually making the "exploration is its own reward" more real for those of us that feel the calling.

Yep, I logged in later and saw that there are no zeroes any more. Meh. There goes mine (and many others) hope that those numbers were placeholders for more advanced scan types; it was only a bug -.-

Back to topic: I don't remember that I've seen terrestrial planet deformed like this before. Obviously effect of strong tidal force (it is extremely close to the star), or very fast spin, or both.

I wwas hoping that there would be an aspect where if you dropped out of supre cruise and were close to the planet surface you would perform a more detailed scan. oh wel ..

I would also like to see, those star systems where the two stellar bodies are in close proximity .... for thegasses of the stars to be sucked into each other as our knowledge of astrophsics dicates .... oh the screenshots then ...

Many thanks to all involved in this most interesting of threads. Its much better than all the fighting talks ! perhaps explorers are a bit more chilled.

Just returned from a "short" exploration trip ~5000ly to Elephants Trunk, Cave NGC 7822 nebulas and can only follow in footsteps of giants that have gone before. I manged to upgrade to RANGER as result. Found a number of interesting things including two Earth Like, but the point of the post was I was wondering what wear and tear would be like and was doing well until two jumps out from Stepping Stone Base station, when I had an altercation with the star whilst fuel scooping, got thrown out of supercruise and everything started smoking ! Managed to excape and arrive at Stepping Stone - The repairs to my ASP were 400K and ship integrety was 25% ! A close run thing. Planning the next trip to Heart and Soul.

All the best and stay safe in the darkness. In space no one can hear you scream when you get too close ....

adder is ok ship ti explore, but one you just send is really bad. how much credits you have? i can send you a loadout for exploring.

@interfector yes please send me your suggestion
I'm just a week in ED and exploring and the setup you see is not the load out I go out and explore to the unknown,
I do for now 100LY trips of places were people have been
yesterday I did make more money and bought the 1C DSC
I'm now saving up for a 3A FSD
And think to make a choice for the 2A Power plant in stead of the 3D for a better jump range

hi! i have 2 builds for your adder. first is budget adder: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60f,,2-3m3m502C2C5K5A,4zgmpT7OW2jw2UI . second one would be pretty much maxed out for exploring:http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60f,,2-3m3m502C2C5K5A,4zgmpT7OW2jw2UI . however you can put 4t fuel tank instead of 8. that will give you even bigger jump range, but you must fuel scoop more often. but 2t tank would be too small. if you don't have enough money to buy advanced scanner, feel free to downgrade to intermediate or basic, that will make whole thing much cheaper. no need for 2a power plant, 2d will be ok (even bigger jump range than 3d). 2d shields are enough to submit to interdiction and boost and jump away immediately. i hope it helps!

I don't know how much help this will be but I thought I would post how I choose the systems I scanned for the routes I used to become Elite i started of at pathfinder most of the exploration I had done had been with a cobra doing rare runs to earn enough to buy an upgrade an asp as well as a bit within about a 50 ly of stations First trip started before 1.1 came out and finished after Scanned around 750 systems made about 28,000 on average (mean) per system including first finds. Scanned most planets except anything that looked like it was icy or rocky in unless the system had terraform able or earth like worlds in it. The route was done by picking systems that looked interesting from the galaxy map these were mainly systems that had neutron stars or black holes in them and then by plotting a route between the systems using mainly systems containing g, f or k type stars Second trip started after 1.1 Scanned around 1480 systems made about 21,000 on average (mean) per system including first finds. Scanned most planets except anything that looked like it was icy or rocky in unless the system had terraform able or earth like worlds in it. The route was done by picking an area that looked interesting or example an area that had a large number of neutron stars and white dwarfs or had a system that contained multiple black holes or neutron stars in it I used the navigation tool in the galaxy map to plan the fastest route and scanned the systems on the way then scanned the area around the place of interest before moving on to the next one. Third trip just after the price increase Scanned around 780 systems made about 53,000 on average (mean) so this would have been about 26,500 before the price increase per system including first finds. Scanned anything if it had not been scanned before that was close enough to scanned from the first star and any system that I thought would have candidates for terraforming, earth like or ammonia worlds with exception to moons around gas giants and when there large amount for rocky or ice planets left. The route was done by traveling out a certain distance from sol I can't remember what it was then started scanning around that area choosing systems that had mainly F, G or A type stars in them for the f and g type stars I was generally picked anything above 5 for example G4 type star. The fourth trip was a short one scanned I think over a hundred which gave me enough to become elite. Unless I missed scanning it I always scanned the first star. I also found that a more heat efficient power supply helps with the fuel scooping

I was wondering and haven't found the answer so far:
Are the detailed surface scan price ranges in Nutter's picture in the first post still accurate with 1.2.03? Or have they increased? If yes, can anybody estimate by how much?

@rudolphus it's very good, but i would put at least 3d fuel scoop (if you can afford it) because scooping in 2d is really slow.
@matlok nope, nutter didn't update price list. those are all pre 1.1 if i remember correctly. don't know for sure how much they have been buffed but i'd say somewhere around 2x maybe more with 1st discovery.

@interfector, well I grind for money till I have save enough to afford for all upgrades,
I thought to keep the 2D because when I will follow your advise to lower mine fuel tank capacity it makes not so big deal.
but I will look in to the 2 of their difference.

I do what I like to call the "safety scoop"

I adjust throttle carefully directly towards the star very slowly until I reach a desired scoop rate, and drop the throttle to zero

After that, I pitch my ship until the radar shows the vertical line directly under the star is on top of or right in front of my ship by a pixel

this way, It means that my ship is angled to scoop at a fairly consistent rate while being at an angle that is nearly parallel to the base (as far as ship orientation is concerned) of the star, so I'm not getting much closer or much farther from the star while scooping and I will never be dropped from SC, and I can just kick back and wait until my fuel completely replenishes without any worry of heat damage or SC drop

Official word was that prices were doubled. I have yet to dock since the update to find out if that is true or not. 1st discovery adds 50%

A couple of weeks ago someone on Reddit compiled statistics from around 400 systems into this picture with updated prices:

Those prices are without first discovery so you need to add 50% if you get it.

My jump range is 31.7 -and I am now 7kLy beyond Sag A.

You'll be fine. Next time, I'll be ditching a whole heap of stuff, including shields. Having said that, this was meant to be a "take my explorer for a test run" for 500Ly. I forgot to turn round...
