ObsidianAnt video about odyssey delay.

If you give players a stake in a game by telling them that it won't happen unless you cough up money a couple of years early, then you create not only an engaged community, but a genuinely entitled one.
Surely, once the game released that entitlement was satisfied? (Excluding the LEP holders, who are entitled to every expansion released by the nature of their purchase)

I have pre-odered both alpha and normal expansion for 2 of my accounts, and will pre-order the 3rd at some point... That must make me very entitled, surely? The odd thing is that the DLC will arrive sooner or later, without any further action needed by me, am I feeling entitled to anything else - of course not!

Yes:
  • 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.0 = all on time
  • 2.1 = delayed 6 weeks
  • 2.2 = delayed 2 months
  • 2.3 = delayed 4 months
  • 2.4 = on time
  • 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 = all on time
  • Apr19, Sep19, Jan20 = all on time
  • FleetCarriers = delayed by 18 months
13 out of 17 updates, or 76%

You're posting in a thread about Odyssey, so you are a little bit interested 😉
This is why I'm confused every time I see hyperbolic humour suggesting everything fdev release will be delayed. They don't make a habit of it.

Then, when they say why it's delayed in a pretty sincere post, the tin foil hats get whipped out and beige planets get cited as evidence that Bill Gates is funding the delay so the Xbox version will be able to track our eating habits.

This video just fuels that nonsense. It's unbalanced. It doesn't even admit that there's no real reason for fdev to lie like this.

All animals are entitled, but some are more entitled than others.

It is curious how the same announcement by Frontier was treated by another, reasonably well-known, youtuber...

No animosity and a balanced 'look' at the situation, in my opinion.
I've not watched it but my guess is it just reports the facts and attempts to base any opinion on them? I've seen a few of his videos and he always seems keen to only say stuff if he's got a dead certain source for it. I've mentioned stuff to him in comments and he's asked for a link to it every time, too. I think that shows a lot of respect to both us and fdev.

Speculation is fine, I can't stress that enough; it's important that people be able to discuss ideas. Plenty do it on YouTube. But there needs to be some sense to it, some basis of evidence that's not wildly speculative.

Conflating beige planets and CDPR's issues into fdev covering up a conspiracy is just weak though. More so because you actually have to admit it's pure speculation. An entire video dedicated to baseless, backhand accusations that you have to admit are baseless...

But look at the comments in this video. Far too many see this as "brave" or "insightful". That's just as much nonsense.

Anyway, no point getting wound up by it. You just choose to watch what you like. His opinion on the matter is his own. I'd just respect it if it had any actual evidence to add any value to it.

It is a very 'laid-back' presentation in his normal style.
We, here, speculate wildly over what may be, which is all fine and good, OA speculating for his audience is not wrong either, the only issue comes when, pretty much the same as here, things get quoted out of context and presented as fact.

Entitlement comes from all sorts of people not just those with a financial stake in a game be it pre-orders, lifetime passes or kickstarted pledges.

Entitlement comes from the very mouth of David braben himself:

David Braben, Chief Executive, said:
We know that our Elite Dangerous community are looking forward to the arrival of Odyssey this year, and we're focussed on delivering the high quality experience that they expect and deserve.

We desrve it, DBOBE says so himself :)

I think the term "entitled" in this context has taken on a different meaning. We're entitled to many things.

It's really referring to "self entitled" or "an inflated sense of entitlement".

Anyone can fairly expect certain things in life, we're entitled to those expectations; paying for a game means we are entitled for it to work and in many cases we're entitled to a refund if the product just doesn't live up to certain expectations. It's when individuals begin to believe their expectations go beyond that of anyone else (their problem is the important one, "sure, you've fixed that but what about my problem? Why isn't that fixed?") or they feel they're entitled to a world where someone else never has to concede or change anything. Like a developer sometimes has to delay. It's to be expected that may disappoint some, they're entitled to feel that way. It's when it goes beyond that into the realms of anger or hatred or whipping up the speculation frenzy without any facts.

For example, death threats aimed at CDPR. That's an extreme case. But self entitlement extends all the way down to simply expecting fdev to admit to something you've got no evidence they actually did.

I'd say the sense of self entitlement is pretty strong with that particular line of thinking. And that's implied heavily in this video. Elevating oneself to the position of suggesting it's OK for fdev to admit the covid reason isn't the truth. That CDPR lied, so it's OK if fdev did too. Almost coaxing them to admit what must be the hidden truth. That it's understandable for Odyssey to be delayed because of consoles. Come on, fdev, you don't need to be coy. We'll be OK if you're just honest!

That's self entitlement. And it's made worse because it fuels others to think their mad theories are true. Because he's in a position where he influences others.

I'd agree to the extent that 'influencers' might need to be more careful with their opinions and that even speculation should have a logical basis.

However, it's every individuals responsibility to look at what is presented to them and draw their own conclusions. I'm not sure that accusing others of whipping up the speculation frenzy with little to no evidence is very helpful either.

FD's history for releasing (major) updates on time is not stellar, to say the least.
To repeat a question from the other thread: who imposed the Odyseey timescale on them and when? Ditto the announcement of the release.
Covid is a very a convenient excuse (and perhaps a part of the justification), but it has been an issue for almost a year now. (And was when they started taking money for the alpha.).
As always, never pre-order anything seems like sound advice.

The response to this point is surely this : what should they have done different?

When the pandemic started?

During the summer, when it had been largely suppressed in UK and everything (ish) was back open?

During winter when things were getting tougher but not out of control?

And then the week they went on holiday when the new variant was explained as being up to 70% more transmissable, and causing a spike which currently is taking 1200 lives a day in UK?

I mean clearly the decisions they should have made are obvious, so just let us know ...

Whatever problems consoles have I don't think making everything a beige colour is one of them so whatever that "downgrade" was about it wasn't a PC/console thing. If they'd been trying to make it work on a Commodore 64, then the muddy beige colours might make more sense.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hostile about it.
It's just been my experience that FDev often make promises they can't keep.

Play the game that is available (or don't), rather than getting bent out of shape over the expansion that isn't.

When it comes to SciFi, ED is probably my 2nd-favourite franchise, after Star Wars, so unless LucasArts decides to release an open-world space-sim in the next 6 months, I'll be sticking with ED to get my pretend spaceship jollies for the foreseeable future.
This may meet your requirements although being Ubisoft is likely to be Assassin's Creed in a galaxy far, far away.
