Obtaining Guarding tech - is it really such a grind?

Hey all,

I've been wanting to get some Guardian tech for a while now - mainly for the FSD boost - but I hear it's quite the grind potentially. I've read some guides - no videos, don't want to spoil everything - and it seems fairly straight-forward. However, I don't want a "simple" activity to be too intense - i.e. have to be completed at once during an extended play session. My time is limited at the moment for various reasons and, what time I've had in game lately has been a more relaxed, running fairly low-risk passenger missions for the Materials reward.

So, those of you who've done this, what did you think of the process? A fun but short diversion or a long and grindy chore?....or somewhere in the middle of course :)

With the new update imminent, it's sorta spurred me to think about this again. However, I'm currently out in Robigo area, so would need to get back to Shinrarta and ensure I have the right ship and loadout for the role...just jumping "home" would likely use up one play session lol...well, maybe not quite.

Note: I have a DBX equipped for jump range and little else, I understand it's a good choice for Guardian stuff? It also has Point Defence, which I understand is also useful. I can easily add an SRV bay.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask about this, doubtless it's been asked countless times and there are many threads on it, but this one's mine :)

Cheers,

Scoob.

Edit: Blimey, why did "Guardian" get changed to "Guarding"? *sigh*

It's fine. Unless, of course, you absolutely must have all the blueprints and materials required to unlock every single piece of Guardian tech... Right Now!

The scenery & soundscape are great; the puzzles are doable by pretty much anyone, but not lowest common denominator simple; there is some repetition, but moving between different Guardian sites kept me entertained enough. Your DBX would be fine - I use an AspX, which is small enough to park close to ruins.

Going for a mod or 2 really isn't bad at all. Got the FSD booster rather quickly. My only issue was delta patterns for the shield booster.

Cool. What I think I'd do is do what's needed to get the FSD, then perhaps try some of the other items at a future time. Of course, if I really enjoy it, I might do some more right away. Roughly how long does it take to unlock one bit of tech? Excluding travel time to the location, which I'll doubtless do during a prior session.

I don't even know what delta patterns are lol. There's a shield booster too? Nice.

It's ok ... the grind complainers want every mod and weapon at once

I guess to me what constitutes as "Grind" varies. A repetitive task that I enjoy, not really that grindy - I quite like doing passenger and Cargo type missions, repetitive to a degree, but fun - the Rank grind I did when I realised I was no where near the level I needed to buy the ship I wanted...well, that was a grind, but I had an end-goal so that made it more fun. Hopefully, even if there is a degree of grind for the Guardian, stuff, it'll be fun or feel worth it for the goal.

Don't know if this helps but I've been out there a couple of times - I did a little tour of Guardian sites (they show up on Galmap under civilization).. It was a nice little tour, solved puzzle at a few sites and visited some ruins for the first time in ages.

If you want to get all the stuff for everything I guess it a repetitive grind but I can back with the stuff for the FSD booster first time, went back because i enjoyed it the first time. It's a bit of a trip but it's something different and atmospheric

I'll be going back again at some point for more

As others have said, if you decide which modules you want, check the requirements and then get the needed materials, it's an interesting process.

If you want one module, its actually a fun diversion. If you want multiple modules of the same type (for example weapons) it becomes a chore. If you want them all you'll go insane.

1) Once you get the hang of it, it takes about 3 minutes to get a blueprint, plus a few more minutes for the other crap (exceptions notwithstanding).
2) Delta patterns are obtained by scanning 'obelisks', most easily found at guardian ruins (different places from where you get the blueprints). Worth visiting anyway just to see it.
3) Guardian Shield boosters are like hull reinforcement but for shields. So while the shield boosters you put in the utilities give a percentage, these guardian modules go into optional slots and offer a flat bonus. The weaker the basic shield of your ship the better. Works brilliantly on small ships.

Wait. You need multiple modules for the same type of weapon?

You don't need multiple modules to fit all your ships with the Guardian FSD boost, or shield boost. Just unlock it the once.

Do you mean different types of weapon?

Thanks for the replies.

It seems that dipping in and out as I desire particular upgrades might be the best way to prevent it being too much of a grind. However, due to the distance from "home" - I understand it's like 1,000ly from Shinrarta to the nearest Guardian site? - perhaps I should camp out there for a short while, enough to unlock the handful of items I'm interested in. So, FSD certainly and perhaps shield booster too - I'm not actually sure exactly what are available lol.

I honestly couldn't tell you how long it might take for one module - that's not how I play, I just go and do stuff with one eye on the minimum number of X I need for different things. I know with Guardian stuff there is more of an effort to get out there, but the FSD booster is one of the easier modules - 1 blueprint + power cells & tech components, which drop pretty consistently... so, maybe a couple hours? I'm heading back out there again with the aim of collecting loads if stuff - I'll probably look at requirements after a few (or dozen) runs to see where I'm at, no point trying to get it all, they're just going to add more stuff I'll need to go back for.

1 important tip: make sure you go to the right ruin - that drops a module blueprint, not weapon.

PS: yes, hang out and get more than you need... the shield booster, I like them (my Krait, Python and Courier all have at least 1).

Fixed, turreted, medium and large versions of the same weapon need individual unlocks.

DBX is a handy ship to use, fit it with Point Defence on the top to hit sentinel missiles to protect the SRV. Travel with it light, with just the SRV of course, and with an engineered ship and a guardian fsd boost in it also, it gets there and back in just a small handful of jumps.

So once youve unlocked the FSD boost, you can go back any time, at your leisure.

yes. If you want one module, you're fine. If you want two modules but of different types (say, a FSD booster and a weapon) you'll do two different ruins, which isn't too bad. If you want all weapons, you'll be grinding through the same ruin over and over with everything always in the same place, which is horrible. In the past you needed multiple blueprints per item, but they thankfully changed that.

Thanks, I do like the DBX, especially as I'm using in something quite a bit larger.

Likely a daft question: But do I need to unlock things, then obtain special materials in order to "craft" them, or do they simply become available to buy once I've done the work to obtain the Blueprint? I.e. If I get the FSD Boost on my DBX, will I need to do the same thing again to get one for other ships? Sorry if that's a daft question, I've only lightly read about Guardian stuff, and it was a while ago...and my memory sucks lol.

Exactly this. I did one for the FSD, but have since been to some other sites to get some weapon blueprints and collect guardian sentinel bits & bobs. Enjoyable, didn't take too long (1 quite brief play session) and some travelling. I'll go back on and off if I need more for more weapons.

Once unlocked, you can buy and fit the items whenever you want on multiple ships, just purchase cost like any module.

Nice, thanks.

Well, as I cannot see any in-game way to get me started with the Guardian stuff, I just did a quick search... I've found a system, "Synuefe NL-N C23-4" which is exactly 830ly from Shinrarta. Not a clue if there are inhabited systems nearby to use as a staging area. I'd likely fly out one session, park up - if possible - then do what's needed. Is there any in-game guidance for this? How did people discover it initially? I'm solely reliant on what I'm reading, but wouldn't have a clue if it wasn't documented outside of the game.

Edit: I just found out there's a "Guardians" filter in the map....proves how log ago I last checked the in-game tools lol. Interestingly though, despite selecting to only show Guardian systems, no systems were shown until I manually found the one above an bookmarked it. Now it remains on the map when I apply the filter...very odd!
