October Community Update Discussion Thread

Thanks, that's definitely useful, but not quite what I meant.

Does the playerbase at large tend to congregate more here, or on other platforms? I see discussion here, but all the major news I see outside of official announcements tends to originate elsewhere.
Reddit and these forums are the two largest, most active communities.

Here are the traffic stats for Reddit (forums' traffic can only be loosely estimated):

Horizons 2015
"Next Era" 2020

5 years

Not factual. It was a 5-stage release that took two years to complete + additional months of patching.

2014, December: Initial release of Elite: Dangerous (just so that we have that as a reference)

2015, December: Planetary Landings
2016, May: The Engineers
2016, October: The Guardians (this patch also introduced Ship Launched Fighters and a new ship: Beluga Liner as well as Passenger Missions among a lot of other things)
2017, April: The Commanders (Multi-crew and Holo-me, new ship Dolphin as well as the Camera Suite, ship naming and IDs etc)
2017, December: The Return (Thargoid related stuff, new ship Type-10 Defender, station evacuation events etc)

All of this was Horizons.

I think it was in August 2018, that FD announced that "next era" had gone through pre-production and was about to go into full production. That means that full production, if they keep the Q4 2020 deadline, will be 2 - 2,5 years, at most.

Yes, they extended the last updates of Horizons for another year. As they are doing now with the carriers.

you guys who are ok waiting another year till winter 2020,wth is wrong with you?
how can you be ok with waiting another year without new content, after its been several years of the same by now?
Im almost 39 and Im not getting younger,I dont want to die before frontier pulls their head out of their behind and fix the game

I am 43 and I promise to give you a heads up if I die first.

People are saying same stuff as last time this happened, and its all too familiar.. some are happy because they want quality, some are unhappy cos they want features. Im personally unhappy this time. Last time i was happy because i wanted quality of game to improve, but did quality improve? Ive noticed no improvement really. Sure little things have been added, but the game had not progressed in a very long time.
Seriously, ive not had this much smoke blown up my ar** since fable 3.
Its a very confusing move.. if the idea is to keep a community playing a game, why let them down at last minute?..... twice with one bit of content let alone the other content related letdowns.
I can see this game going same way as pirates of the burning sea... a beautiful concept and broken promise after broken promise with stupid, uneeded and uninspired content added occational to appease people that is aimed at large groups to try and solidify community whilst the player base slowly dwindles to next to none rendering all the large group content pretty much useless.

All this "next gen launch game" crap is ridiculous too. People remember.. if they launched pirates of the burning sea again with same engine but said it was for next gen, i would just remember what a mess it was and my frustration at it all... i wouldnt think "god yeah, il go through that again!". And its not the bugs that killed potbs, it was the lack of progression in content aimed at the individual player
I mean sure, gta5 did it and it worked.. but pretty much from day one we were all waiting for xbox one to launch and unlock gtas full potiential and it was a short wait.

I personally got every ship in game, tried everything, played it to bordom and ran out of stuff to do ages ago.. last thing that added anything to game for me was the engineers update.. since then ive just been collecting money for nothing really... just sits there. The only thing that kept me playing was more end game content being on the way.. a bigger ship or a story that was engaging and fun.. but none of it arrived. We were told it would and it didnt.. instead what we have had its early to mid game stuff added over and over.. game improvments for new players and some wierd obsession with drawing more new people in to play whilst they just kinda ignore the people who have been here from the start.
I mean jesus! The alliance ships added to game! They are all rubbish.. we already had better ships in game... and the type 10! Awesome idea! Lets make a combat vessel out of a cargo ship!
Fleet carriers was the first bit of content that made the game feel like it was actually progressing, and theyve screwed us twice on it. Dont get me started on that bloody CQC mode they added.. all that time wasted adding total rubbish to the game.. and all the bugs and needed updates after each bit of rubbish gets added.. this is why progression gets delayed over and over.. its not the communities fault for being fed up of bugs and petioning to have them fixed, its not the the creator of the elite francises fault for not meeting promises.... its his teams fault for basically being idiots who think there will be an endless stream of new players all the time they improve start of game.. the fans of elite.. the people who have played it since 1984 are already in game and even put money forward to aid its development, but over the years ive slowly seen them dwindle as the game fails to live up to the feeling achieved from playing the previous installments which, by age alone should be left in the shadows by elite:dangerous. All the things that need fixing, all the missed deadlines and delays.. all this so you can add a few cr@p ships, thousands of bugs and some e exploration update that makes the never ending expance of space still never ending, but explorable faster.... Id feel like a f*cking idiot if i was the one paying the devs to continue doing there fine work

What does that have to do with you lying by omission about "Next Era" timeframe?

Ehm? I didnt lie about that, Its confirmed by FD the "New Era" will be in late 2020, that's 5 years since the last paid update.
Personally I don't believe them, as no one should. They keep pushing back year after year content in favor of QUESTIONABLE "quality" and delivering a really poor and simplistic game.

Eh... it is what it is. What i find funny is quite a few of the responses.

FD: We're delaying new content to work on game stability
Players: well, since you delayed the new content, this means you have time to make this other new content right?

Just makes me chuckle...

Glad they took this route. Fix da dam bugs. I don't care about fleet carriers, I have Jameson and her neighbors for all I'll ever need.

I would welcome small additions to the game like more interesting landable planets (I don't care if it has an atmosphere or not).
Make mats grinding have more depth. Give us more reasons to go out and get them. 1-2 more SRV types would be cool.
Consider some of the hundreds of QOL improvements we suggest on a daily basis. Make use of this free consulting service we provide.

Any expansion on the Guardian/Thargoid story would also be great. Not JUST the story though. Give us interesting ways to interact
with them (more ruins, crash sites, secret bases). Shooting giant weeds in space is not interesting.

"Simple legs" (ship, immediate dock area), is fine as long as it doesn't ruin the game as it was intended (no FPS).

Sometimes less is more.

X.

And as for Horizon, with additions for a few more years for our greatest happiness.

Quite. They’ve been ’delaying new content to focus on bugs’ for years now and the end product is more bugs than ever before. At this stage it’s best to consider ED is essentially at the end of the road.

My money is on the ‘Next Big Thing’ turning into ED2 a couple of months before release.

And people said years back that Elite wasn't in maintenance mode. LOL at them.
This game clearly exceeds the capacity of FD. 100 developers they said. Ha!
Your partially correct. There are a small group keeping the game ticking over while the rest work on the "next era".

But we won't see the fruits of their labour until next year. So why you don't think there are 100 Devs is beyond me. There is no evidence for that, but plenty for (the group of people that attended).

People keep going on about 100 Devs as if it's a massive team. It isn't. It's rather small for a game with the scope of ED. They seem to have done a reasonable job so far considering the small size of the team.

Yes, you lied, since you did state, as a response to what I wrote, that "Next Era" has been worked on since 2015, which is a lie. But, of course, you are free to move your goalposts around as much as you want. Typical rule techniques to fit your agenda.
