Oculus pre order information

I can echo that sentiment. Haven't plugged mine in since it stopped working correctly.
Just proves my point that it's the software that sells the hardware.
Mine is working just perfectly. In fact since I got it early last year I've only played ED on a monitor to take a screen shot.
Just don't upgrade the SDK and don't install Windows 10.
I think you should do a live stream wearing your OR.

Why the defeatism? There's been a perfectly good work around that's easy as pie for ages :)

Been rifting non-stop for 8 months now :D

I would hazard a guess that CV1 support *is* a high priority for Frontier, if only from a sales point of view - to not support it would be stupid. But I would also guess that the CV1 is still a moving target regarding the SDK - we are still pre-ordering the device, not getting it in our hands.

Until Oculus say "This is the final API you need" for the Cobra engine to support Direct Mode, why throw all your resources at it? There are other more pressing issues to be worked on, and bugs to be fixed.

On 12/21, Oculus did lock down the v1.0 specifications and communicate them to developers with final hardware.

As an engineer, I can understand that they need time to look into it and confirm whether it's suitable or not, especially since the team was hopefully taking some well deserved holiday time. That said, I would love a straight answer on whether or not they've received the v1.0 SDK. Maybe Oculus hasn't given it to them yet? Maybe they have, but there's an NDA attached?

Unfortunately, I'm with Wokawidget that this thread doesn't really give me much confidence in proper support. Though it has had the proper effect of my deciding not to put in a preorder yet.

As I understand it, the consumer hardware is now in full production, and if that's the case it'll be delivered in weeks rather than months. Pre-orders may simply be a way of gauging their production volume targets to avoid delivery delays or overstocking.

If Frontier weren't high on the list of developers to get the pre-release CV1 units and SDK then I think that says something about their relationship with Oculus, especially given Elite is the perfect match for their technology (and has generated sales of more than a few DK2 units). My suspicion is that there *are* technical issues that prevent Elite running correctly in direct mode, but that Frontier are pushing them back to Oculus rather than working around them (i.e. taking the idealist rather than pragmatist point-of-view).

The problem is that given the official line from Frontier, those users who would like to buy an Oculus Rift are completely in the dark as to whether Elite will ever work with it. There is no commitment from Frontier to implement support, no timescale for support, nor any indications of roadblocks to support. So we're left to read between the lines. More open communication from Frontier is really all that I'm asking for, so that I can make an informed decision.

You do realise with third party DEVICE problems its better to talk to the source then trying work around a problem...because every update would break your work around and you would have to work again for a new work around...until it breaks again...thats inefficient and costly.
There is a reason why every company and game developer gives you the "did you update your drivers" meme...

Unless it's already known, I'll be trying out 0.6 with CV1 tonight and share what the results are. I'm still in the office at the moment though, waiting for the preorders to start so I can get one :)

Otherwise, from my thread you can see that CV1 + 0.8 oculus runtime + SteamVR can work if setup correctly.

I'm pretty sure CV1 will be supported when it comes out.

GREAT! Debate ending news! You are my main man ghcannon

That's not what I said at all :D
I merely said I was confused and Zacs posts were cryptic.
I only play ED...if I wasn't confident about future support I wouldn't be pre-ordering a CV1. If it does all go pear shaped, then like I said in a previous post, self inflicted on my behalf.

Yours is a DK2 I have a DK1 ;)

Last time I tried to install the 0.4/0.3 libraries for that, it destroyed the whole Windows install. So I had to reinstall Win 10 :p

My point was the same as yours however I only bought the Rift because of Elite. Not the other way around ;)

Tell me more of this VR shipyard. Sounds like I may be a VR owner who could help out :)

For LaveCon 2015 I took my PC with Oculus DK2. In Elite: Dangerous I purchased 18 of the 20 ships available (missing the Type 9 & Orca) and set up my PC in the LAN room, so that anyone who had not tried VR could sit in their favourite ship.
People got the chance to see what an amazing work of art the ships interiors are in game. The reactions of both adults and children to VR was entertaining in itself. You have to try VR for yourself; “No one can explain what The Matrix is…”
The LaveRadio team have said they are making the LAN room a bit more central this year. Depending on how far Horizons is along by that time, we might be able to have four players on the bridge of my Anaconda or Imperial Cutter. Something to see.

Just ordered mine. Wasn't expecting to see $600 for it but let's hope it's worth it and also lets hope they ship quickly! Sooner than March would be a pleasant surprise!

£499 in the UK not including tax or shipping... what a bloody rip off... will stick to my edtraker till they get imported over here and come down in price.... gutted

699 EUR for rest of Europe... And even here list of countries is fairly limited to larger ones... :(
I think I'll wait for Vive... especially since it has in-built camera, thru which I'll hopefully be able to see my keyboard to easily navigate star map :)

Reddit people are guessing the Vive will be in the $800 range. I'm guessing $799 personally. Camera and controllers included, I guess that's the better deal? Damn, I'm not sure how many people are going to be buying these things. We might actually be seeing the beginning of the end of VR. :(
