Oculus pre order information

For LaveCon 2015 I took my PC with Oculus DK2. In Elite: Dangerous I purchased 18 of the 20 ships available (missing the Type 9 & Orca) and set up my PC in the LAN room, so that anyone who had not tried VR could sit in their favourite ship.
People got the chance to see what an amazing work of art the ships interiors are in game. The reactions of both adults and children to VR was entertaining in itself. You have to try VR for yourself; “No one can explain what The Matrix is…”
The LaveRadio team have said they are making the LAN room a bit more central this year. Depending on how far Horizons is along by that time, we might be able to have four players on the bridge of my Anaconda or Imperial Cutter. Something to see.

I didn't know you had done this, but this was certainly a fantastic idea and I think it would be excellent to repeat something similar this year. I do agree that one of the main points on Oculus is that you can look around the interior of your ship's bridge and see parts of it that are not visible in any other way. I especially like the T9 for this.

Didn't expect to say this....but please continue to support the DK2 and 0.6!!!!!!

No way I'll be able to afford that price

What exactly is the problem? Can you give a little insight?

Afaik they have to change a fundamental part of how ED is rendered. Before you rendered normal view the player sees and then distort it for lenses. With new SDK direct mode you have to render it into a special buffer. Directly. Because it provides lower latency.

Well, pre-order confirmed!

£539 or $768 in total (yeah, rip-off Britain strikes once more). More wonga than I wanted to spend, but within black-ops budget.

So Virtual Reality Shipyard at LaveCon 2016 confirmed. No pressure Zac...

just placed preorder - 750 euro. I'm speechless. I'll most probably cancel it in about a month.

I have the thing RIGHT NEXT TO ME and it's NOT even that much better than a DK2 dang it!!

Thanks, looking forward to hearing results!

Yes, I'm home and have had a few cigarettes after seeing the preorder price so now I'll get to trying it out.
I'm thinking of also snatching a few pictures with my phone just so you guys know I'm not trolling you or whatever

I pre-ordered..... Then promptly cancelled it.

TBH £529 is just a bit out of my price range after getting a new laptop, and I would also have to factor in another £500 *at least* to get a GTX9xx card (currently I run 760 in SLI which does me fine).

Here's hoping the DK2 will be supported by the 1.0 SDK for a while.

Edit: What I just posted on Facebook (oh the irony)

I had the Oculus on pre-order. About 30 minutes later I cancelled it - to factor in the UK price (£499) plus ESTIMATED shipping pushing it to £529, that doesn't even factor in that you need a <1 year old GPU to get the best out of it (so that's another £400 minimum).

Currently there is no guarantee that beyond the release games, the game I want to play will have persistence Elite Dangerous is already struggling on my 760 SLI setup at time).

To the argument about early adopter price - that's already come and gone, we've had the DK1 & 2 - we're now heading up the bell curve.

So it looks like it's a waiting game, to see what HTC can pull out the bag with the Vive.
