Oculus pre order information

You lot are sad.
Yesterday Frontier got it in the neck because they wouldnt say if they would support CV1.

Today no one gives a hoot cause the thing is to flipping expensive anyway.

WONDER WHY FRONTIER DON'T COMMENT MUCH HERE!!

I don't think we are sad really. I got in there straight away to pre order. I'll just wait now and see what FD say. Between now and March something will be said. If they turn round and say they are in bed with HTC them I'll cancel the rift. If they don't say anything before I get it then judging by the pre order rush I'll have no problem flogging it. Might even get back what I paid.

Now if they were being shipped next week I probably wouldn't have pre ordered one. I'm confident FD will support the cv1. And as was mentioned somewhere else the motion controller things look very good indeed.

Ultimately, if you're only going to buy the CV1 for ED, and nothing else, then it costs you nothing to wait for official support.

You *don't* need to order it at 4:00:01 tomorrow. If people aren't happy with the statement from FD, don't buy a CV1 - simple. If you're going to use the Rift for other things (they do exist you know), then you shouldn't have any conflict.

I don't get why people are complaining about FD preventing them from being first in the queue for the Rift - if it's that big an issue for you, simply don't buy one until full support is confirmed.

Well said and done I can wait.

If the Rift really is being sold at-cost, I can't imagine the Vive being any cheaper. Better, maybe, but not cheaper.

Yeah no way the Vive is going to be 999 now probably.

Not pre-ordering anything. I'm not jumping on that bandwagon. All I play in VR is ED (currently running beautifully on my DK2). Before I dump that kind of money for a commercial HMD, it better be working 100% with ED (damn it!). Between the rift and the VIVE, I'll immediately purchase the first one that has existing support. Otherwise, I'll keep my money right where it is. No hurry.

If i had a DK2 then i wouldnt buy the CV1 just yet... however after being patient (somehow) and holding off on a DK2 for a year of ED. The CV1 is something i cant hold out for, pre-order is 100% essential here.

Excited!

Same as others, I use the rift for other things as well as ED.
I also dual boot Win10 and Win7 (DK2 + OR 0.5) for ED

Pre-order is in, have time to cancel if FD don't give further information, but I may keep it for other games.

No idea what all the fuss is about, it is not like you spent $599 already, they are not even taking the money for months, so all you are doing is waiting in a queue.

Well, I also pre-ordered.

Steep price yes, more than we all wanted, but hopefully worth it.

Now we need ED to officially support 1.0... apparently the 1.0 SDK will be released on the first shipments on the CV1. So, hopefully after this we'll get support.

Believe I'm looking at April - but with the above statement about the SDK, seems like it's not a bad thing to wait a bit anyway...

Can we get back on topic.

I'd like to know more about the issue at hand and what FDEV are doing to sort it.

The only reason direct mode works now with dk2 is because steamVR supports extended and can convert it to direct. This will not be the case much longer. SteamVR is rumoured to change to direct mode only in the future. Won't that mean Vive support will also break?

Honestly VR is the only thing elite has going for it (for me personally). I'd have no interest in it otherwise. I'd love to know if FDEV have received the final rift engineering samples and runtime 1.0 so they can make the necessary changes to the cobra engine.

I signed up to elite as a beta backer for VR. I've a rift arriving in March and am none the wiser whether it'll work or of the actual problems which have existed since runtime 0.7.

Think it said you can create an account at a later date.

It said I would be given the option of creating an account after completing the order but I wasn't given the option. I've created a support account but this seems to be separate from the shop account and I can't see any way of creating a shop account.

Frontier doesn't control Occulus.

If the SDK moves in a direction that prevents Elite from rendering properly, Frontier may or may not be able to do anything about it.

"We're working with Occulus"

This probably translates as:

"The new SDK fails mysteriously due to undocumented changes to an API we don't own. The code we're writing should work per our understanding, and what Occulus tells us, but it throws horrible lovecraftian errors and generates non euclidean rendering artefacts instead because those guys have some weird bug in their code."

This is how interfacing with third party software under development goes sometimes. It sucks.

I'm pretty sure Occulus and Frontier understand that there is a big wallet influx waiting for both of them if they can hash this out, which is why it's "We're working with Occulus" and not: "Occulus support has been discontinued until further notice".

Corporate speak gets rough sometimes, but you have to understand, straight up saying: " It was working fine until those nuttholes broke it " has potential legal consequences, so we only get distorted parts of the real story.

^This. Just this.

Brilliant.

Been awhile since I wasted 3 minutes of my life in such a meaningless way. Congratz!

With Star Citizen VR this year, at least those VR Elite users can get their SpaceSim addiction there instead. Can't see this whole thing being such a problem actually, Elite is great and all that, but it's nothing to cry over, it's not Oculus's fault that the ED Engine doesn't work in direct mode.
Frontier should have thought ahead in terms of the Oculus Release schedule and engine compatibility to ensure this type of thing didn't happen. It is what it is. And there isn't a damn thing you or I can do about it. If you want a VRDogfight, go play Eve Valkyrie, if you want VRSpaceSim go play Star Citizen.

Have you played SC at all? To each their own but for me personally it is no elite beater and that won't change for me unless the flight model goesmback to the drawing board.

I have backed that too so have a dog in both races.... On and those who are saying ED specs for VR are unreasonable ...... Again unless something changes SC in vr is going to crush all systems I can see it being the new crysis in terms of system killer esp in VR.

Which is a return to form for Chris Roberts and brings back fond memories of strike commander

Got that right. SC in VR will require a lot more than a home computer to drive, with the power plant right beside the place. That is when they eventually get around to semi-optimize the engine.

+1

let's get back to the topic of VR support, and what happens when extended mode goes away.

Just confirmed CV1 is working with SteamVR & Oculus runtime 0.8 really nicely. I doubt this information will help the team much though so feel free to pass it along if you feel you need to.

Hey everyone,

With the news that Oculus are starting pre order of their consumer version tomorrow, I wanted to just make a quick post to confirm that we are still actively working with Oculus but currently the only SDK we are able to officially support is 0.6.

We wanted to make sure you had as much up to date information as possible and will let you know as soon as we have any more information.

Fly safe, Commanders!

So, can you confirm you are actually in possession of the oculus 1.0 SDK?
