Oculus Quest 2 for Elite Dangerous

For me, getting the elite strap and the facial inserts almost a must have.

After getting these, the q2 is very comfortable, and the wider facial interface increases fov and sharpness, as well as makes the middle IPD step seem ok.
By default it was just off enough to noticeable.

Yesterday I picked up a Quest 2 - and I’m massively impressed with it! As a stand-alone unit it is better than my Quest 1; trying out Star Wars Tales From Galaxy’s Edge again is a much smoother experience with better graphics, and the other Quest games all seem to have benefited from the upgrade as well.

Connecting up my cheap Link cable for a bit of Elite - wow! The last time I tried Link with the first Quest, it was pretty dire - stutters and artefacts, not a pleasant time. Now: smooth as softened butter and crystal clear. Not sure what magic has been conjured by Carmack & Co, but it’s certainly worked 😁

Compared to my Rift S, screen door is practically gone (if I squint, I can just about see it on bright white objects), the FoV is slightly wider, sweetspot seems bigger, and things look just a little bit crisper. I’m also surprised by the default headband - it’s got a lot of stick in reviews but I must have the right head shape for it 🙂 The headset is a touch lighter than the S, and I’ve remained comfortable in my one play session so far.

Although not used in ED, the new Touch controllers are better than the Rift’s as well - no more battery doors sliding off in the lightsaber dojo 😅

Looks like my Rift S is getting packed up today - and I’ll be trying to get the Quest 2 updated to v28 so I can try out AirLink with Odyssey 😱

Never had anything else but the Q2 on ED is amazing, either with cable or Airlink I get great graphics and being "in" the game is a massive change to game. Playing none VR is such a step back.

Would recommend using VoiceAttack too - never see that keyboard again.

Needing a FB account... Just as bad as the rest, just got caught. Need to log into Windows to play, Chrome boots into the Google account, Steam has what it wants... Nature of the beast these day.

all this does is open a curved version in a pancake window, have tried launching from oculus and steam vr, multiple reinstalls and cant get this to actually load in a headset, this is literally the only game that i have trouble running in vr
if anyone was having the same issue (was also not loading vr for game pass games) using airlink instead of virtual desktop fixed it

Let me try and get some clarification, I am considering purchasing the Oculus 2 for elite dangerous.
If I want to play Elite Dangerous Odyssey using the Oculus 2, am I required to link it to a FaceBook account?
That would be a big turnoff for me.

To play anything using an Oculus regardless of the version you are required to gave a facebook account. Unless of course you are an existing owner, then you get a while to use it without having an account before the requirement kicks in, which of course tells us the account isn't "necessary" but desirable from facebooks point of view.

Just also keep in mind if your facebook account stops working, you get banned or otherwise removed from the site, you will not be able to use your Oculus....at all!

You are required to have a FB account if you’ve newly purchased a Quest 2.

When setting up an account I was required to provide:
  • First name
  • Last name
  • Date of Birth
  • Email address
  • Gender
All other information about yourself is optional to provide - I have declined to do so, set all notifications to Off and set everything to Private.

Personally, I can’t get excited by the “what-ifs” around the FB requirement - I was a bit miffed by the mandatory Steam account to play Half-Life 2 back 17 years ago, but the “what-ifs” from then about losing access to all my games etc. haven’t seemed to have come to anything, so I’ll take my chances with my lovely AirLinked headset 😁

Why use a link cable? Airband (or virtual desktop before it) gives lag free play (actually for me better than the link cable, weirdly) - I play with Airband, and keep the Quest 2 plugged in to a charging USB port so only needing a lightweight standard long USB cable.

The link over WIFI runs about 20ms lag which is imperceptible (for context, the human ear can't differentiate 2 sounds 20ms apart)

As for Odyssey - don't bother yet... the FPS is terrible, though I'm sure will be fixed at some point. I would recommend sticking with EVH which is simply glorious in VR... heartily recommend going finding a gas giant and a neutron star - breathtaking!

I use the Link cable for seated games - battery discharge is very low when doing so. For everything else, I’m AirLinked up and very happy with it 😁

I’ve been playing ED in VR for about 4 years now - with Odyssey I’ve had to drop a few settings down a notch and put SS back to 1.0 but apart from that I’m enjoying the new stuff. Just a pity that on-foot is a virtual flatscreen (though I think any VR in Odyssey is a bonus) but using the camera suite comes in handy there.
