I think SS is a daft setting with the current HMDs; I never notice the benefits. HMD is where it is at!
1,000,000 pixels * 0.85 SS * 1.25 HMD = 1,062,500 pixels. I notice much better clarity than plain old 1,000,000 pixels, at very similar performance!
I think I notice a teeny negative difference between SS at 1 and 0.85, but a big positive between 1 HMD and 1.25 HMD. But that might just be my eyes. At what point to people notice a drop in visuals turning down SS?
When I am next at my PC I might use the oculus tray tool to set HMD to 1.34 and ED's SS setting to 0.75 which costs an additional 0.5% headroom and see what it looks like. Shame you can't take images to scrutinise!
EDIT
Can you take images that replicate what you see in the HMD??
I’ve seen video and images captured from the HMD, problem is since people view those images on a flatscreen further from their face, they don’t see the SDE or the god rays from the frenzal lenses. But, for me anyway, after using the HMD for a while my brain kinda “deletes” the SDE, like in those videos you watch where if you focus on something you brain gets rid of the parts of the image it determines is unimportant.
I haven’t messed with the HMD setting or SS balance much myself, just use the preset High or Ultra, but I may mess with it now and see what I can get out of it.
