Oculus SDK/Runtime 0.8 Released

Like your optimism but that might be just what it is optimism. I am not really talking about the fact that VR will be supported but rather the statement about the exploding crowd of VR gamers I think that will be the real mystery is if people invest in this or just stick with their console. It is a pretty big jump when you add it all up, the device, the computer, supporting games designed for it all of those things have to happen in a big way for this to be truly successful.

Im pretty sure VR will be a success. And i mean in a major major way. But sure it will definitely not go mainstream in 16-17, that will come later in later versions.
VR is in many way the final platform. Once it gets good enough, you can throw away alot of older gear and technologies for good. But that is still 5-10 years out id say.

In 2016-2019 VR will litterary eat up the enthusiast and gamer crowd. Even the "gaming on the couch with friends" crowd will follow soon after. And gradually together with mobile devices eat further and further into the mainstream segment. I just cant see any reason it wont.

The only thing which excites me as much as VR is AR.... this could be just as cool as VR imo.

obviously in the long run, I am sure it will be 1 device for both experiences...... clear glasses and it is AR, press a button and they black up to become VR.

I reckon 10 years from now the videogame as well as digital communications industry will be a lot different than it is right now. its nice to be on the cutting edge of it all imo.

people say about the insane cost of a high end rig to run VR. I say this is very short sighted. what is high end today is mid range gaming pc in 2 years time, entry level gaming pc in 4 years time and mobile phone level in 5 years.

VR does not have to be perfect and mainstream in the 1st iteration... it just has to wet everyones imagination and get them thinking about it for the future.

Apparently you misread my statement, as I said support from developers will be there but are these hordes of people really going to jump on this in the numbers needed to stay afloat at the cost needed to truly enjoy it? I hope they do but that is a very optimistic outlook and the support will have to be rather quick or development will suffer as per the nature of business.
This doesn't really hold true when it comes to computer and software, sure other kinds of development, but there can be significant advantages to waiting until the platform is official, not least of all being the fact that erroneous beta code can affect the game negatively for those not using it, in this case those not using oculus..But yes I get what you are saying, I'm just saying temper it a bit with patience :) being on the cutting edge was never something that was that easy in terms of getting things to work properly e.t.c. though yes, right now there's a lot of people right now on that edge because of VR's appeal.

But also don't worry they are clearly working on it.

Not a point made in that post I didn't agree with 100%

I disagree that the combined AR/VR unit will be glasses with an AR/VR button - it'll either need something like the CastAR snap-on bits to go from AR to VR (you need to cut external light for proper VR), or need to be goggles. :p

Apart from the nitpicking, I too agree! :) AR and VR are going to be as ubiquitous as mobiles phones in the not too distant future.

We'll all look like extras from the Walking Dead bumping into each other in a zombified state.

Although I'm like that most days already...

I only play ED (now) with my DK2. It's smoother than it's ever been - a close-to-flawless experience on the older drivers.

same, ED works fine so long as you stick to the 0.5 runtime. This severely limits what other games you can use with the dk2 but i only bought it for ED so im fine with that. I use it on Euro Truck Simulator 2 as well which is kind of cool in a relaxing sort of way.

Ditto that. I'm dumping the Oculus Rift for the HTC vive anyway as soon as it's available.

The downside of vive is the mechanical scanning system. Then again it should be reliable for the average number of years a user will have that system.
