Odyssey Going Forwards

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
You would genuinely have better results deleting Odyssey and starting over. Horizons was in a good place. It had room to grow, but it was a fairly polished gem. This expansion has been steps backwards in every regard. Stability. Visuals. Gameplay and mission running. Xeno combat. Performance. Terrain generation. User interface. Flight model. Its a fundamentally worse game in every regard. I don't know what benefits the "new engine" brings, but I do know that my game is ugly and unplayable now. Delete odyssey and give the people that bought it a DLC pass for life, because you delivered us a broken product.

Making a decision and clearly communicating it in a timely fashion is definitely the right thing to do. Nice message and I appreciate it. Thanks D.Braben.

Yes I am a paying customer that is frustrated, blah blah blah. Honestly I have purchased lots of crap and not thought twice about it. Shrug and move on. The difference here is I really like ED so I really hope things work out good.

I mostly like exploring anyway. I got my Artemis suit. I got my frame rate functional. Sounds like Horizons is gonna be around as a nice fall-back. Time to head back out into the far reaches of the galaxy and return in six months.

I’m not sure if anyone at Frontier is monitoring replies, but I would recommend refunding anyone who’s paid for the Odyssey DLC thus far. Clearly it has not met anyone’s expectations, including the dev teams that built it, and this would seem the right thing to do.

For my part as a long-time PC VR player, I was never planning to pay for the DLC as going on foot was never that interesting to me — I am all about flying space ships. I was really looking forward to experiencing the graphical improvements to the Elite world in Horizons though, and it sounds like that might be a longer wait now, which is unfortunate. If Frontier would like another test pilot out there, with a VR setup, let me know. I can’t justify paying for Odyssey, but it definitely seems like you need more people willing to spend time with the update and reporting issues. I want the game to evolve and continue so happy to offer my time and feedback. :)

We always get the same bugs pc has, we never get an improvement version, so it makes no difference waiting, we will get the same mess you have
So, you really want to tell me, that you're willing to spend 40 quids for this product in a state that it is right now? For what? To have another reason to flame against Frontier?

P.S.: Those questions are all of rhetoric nature and I don't expect a reasonable answer at all.

Count me in as a VR-tester and I don't even need a Odyssee copy because I already have one. ;)

Oh, wait a minute! I AM one already! :cautious:

No it’s not, this Elite was always a multi platform game realise, console is not a afterthought or second class citizen.
Well that's not correct. Elite (1984) wasn't on consoles. Neither were it's successors up until ED. A lot of the fanbase are playing ED because of their time in the earlier versions.
Elite Dangerous came out on PC first and the majority of the playerbase, I would bet, is PC.
Console isn't an after thought, it's a logical step to port it over to them because it increases the market and therefore sales.

But getting it all sorted on PC first and then porting to consoles makes total sense.

I'm a console player (Xbox). If I'm honest, the wait until Autumn 2021 for the console release felt almost unbearably long. Now, hearing the news that the release is postponed even further (I'm guessing a Q2 2022 timeframe), a tremendous let-down. I have very little leisure time lately, and what time I do have is devoted to ED. The Odyssey console release was, for me, a shining light to look forward to in an unusually dismal 18 months.

HOWEVER, I am very pleased that David would take the time to reach out and give share the bad news himself. Indeed, the approach of setting aside the console development to fix the core issues is the right one. Plowing ahead with console dev while the core issues lingered would have only served to compound the issues. This could not have been an easy decision to make and I applaud the whole FD team for making it.

Take your time, get it right, be transparent, and your community will stick by you.

why should we believe you this time

None of this is "we've listened to feedback from the PC community and we're shifting focus to respond to that". It's because they won't be ready for console, so they need to stretch out the testing on PC.
It isn't mutually exclusive though, I'd say it's both.

No it’s not, this Elite was always a multi platform game realise, console is not a afterthought or second class citizen.
They're beta testing on the PC user base because they don't want a Cyberpunk level disaster for console launch - because Sony and Microsoft keep their platforms locked down and would hold them accountable. On PC, Frontier get total freedom for release and update schedule and if the content is unplayable, only the community will do anything about it.

They're stretching back the console launch because optimisation on PC still hasn't reached a satisfactory standard, so they still need to use the PC community as guinea pigs to beta test the full release game they purchased.

So in that framework, we are all second class citizens to Frontier.

No, I think he is saying that if they can't fix it in a timely manner they should do the adult thing and issue a callback, refunding everyone. That would be a very good ACTION to prove it's not just words thst they want our trust back.
Hmm.. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one.

I'd say I was surprised/disappointed, but this is Frontier Development we are talking about.
A company of over 500+ employees, 10's of millions in yearly revenue, that has the undying support of it's community, but can't fullfil it's promises... while you got much smaller teams (Hello Games), with fewer resources, and less support, doing more for their games than Frontier ever will.
I got a thousand plus hours in Elite and have been playing since the GPP.
Almost every decision Frontier makes leads me to be less and less likely to pick up the controller.
And it's a shame considering how much potential the game has.
Makes me wish they would sell it to a developer who would actually do something with the game.

But hey, at least they got that dinosaur money, AmIRight?

It's not mutually exclusive. But the suggestion from Frontier that the only reason they're doing bug fixes to make the game serviceable for PC, is because they're responding to community feedback, is frankly insulting.
1. Because it implies they don't have a clue about the state of their own game. They had to wait for us to tell them what state it's in before they realised it wasn't fit to push out.
2. It's playing off the communities against each other while Frontier keep themselves out of the firing line. It's not their fault things are being held back for console. It's PC feedback meaning they have to shift focus and delay for their console community.
3. The reality is far more likely that they are using PC as beta testing for optimisation to get things to a state where they can launch on console without the bad press of a Cyberpunk level failed launch, because Sony have already demonstrated with CDPR that they will hold publishers to account for pushing out inadequate products.

It's spin on top of misinformation, masked as "we're listening!". They knew things weren't ready during the alpha. They didn't need the player base to tell them that. Just more lies.
