Odyssey in VR

I know it has been announced that Odyssey will not support VR during initial launch. I guess that the problem are the hands and motion controllers.

BUT! Would it be possible to let us play Odyssey in VR while using mouse and keyboard???? (i.e. without motion controllers)

It does not make much sense anyway. People are using HOTAS and I can't imagine myself releasing hotas, putting touch controllers on both hands and standing up every time I want to walk. That would be... inconvenient at least.

We are all used to press the keys without looking at them, which is skill needed in VR anyway. Especially when typing a message.

So please please please, do not block the access to Odyssey just because you recognize that player has VR! Give us the option to play with VR glasses and mouse + keyboard.

THANKS!!!!!

You can...
Didnt you see the post?
We can play vr in a small 2d window flat screen but can still keep hmd on. For now. Till they get something better sorted.

I think they've gone this route as it's not the most comfortable doing legs VR unless you spend a lot of time perfecting it. Since they've allowed VR to still be in the game when in ship / SRV maybe some clever type can generate the 3D info that would allow players to enjoy VR without Fdev being responsible for players comfort (hint hint Fdev, leave some hooks in the engine).
But I kind'a like the option they've given us where we play in VR until on legs then either play a projected image in the headset or remove the headset and continue playing the legs bit without interruption.
Also, the game can already be interchangeably played via HOTAS, keyboard & mouse or controller (I often grab the mouse in VR to navigate thru station menus).

OP, seriously, when you step back and think about it, do you really really think that the ‘simple problem with simple solution’ situation that you’ve set out is what’s actually going on? Genuinely?

I mean, if so, good luck to you and all, but.... 🤷‍♂️

Also, no one’s being blocked from Odyssey because they have VR. Not sure where you’ve got that idea from. You’ll still be able to play Odyssey, you’ll just have the on foot parts in flat 2D just the same as everyone who doesn’t play in VR.

In the entire discussion and all the info that FDEV have released this is the very first time anyone has mentioned touch controllers, so I am not sure why you think the only problem with Odyssey in VR is the use of touch controllers, that makes zero sense.

Ahhh I see ops point.
The transition from 2d to vr legs ...then hotas or controllers? Would have to have em nearby. He is asking can we come out of the srv or ship onto legs and have a mouse keyboard wasd setup.... mmm I dunno if that'll work. Sounds good only l can't see during the transition and indeed after, have to feel (muscle memory again like with the hotas) and learn it all. Cant see it being an issue.
I think?
Defo mouse and keyboard rather than controllers which are crap ingame clunky slowmo etc. Kbm would be the answer?

Someone made this statement to me " last statement frontier made said this expansion will phase out vr implementation "

Anybody knows if this is true ?

Not seen this, last I heard they were still going to be working on implementing VR for legs some time in the future.

Did they? I must have missed that.

It's strongly implied in the latest update about VR for Odyssey;

We understand that VR is a big part of Elite Dangerous and is a feature that holds a dedicated and passionate community. However, we do strongly believe that VR should only be enabled for on foot gameplay when we have an experience that truly matches the same quality bar that we set for cockpits.

In this PC gamer article it's explicitly stated that the 2D Odyssey on foot experience is only the current iteration in VR for Odyssey;

According to Tolmie, Frontier Development wants to ensure that any VR experience it creates for on-foot gameplay matches the quality of the cockpit VR the game is known for which is why the team is keeping it limited to a flat screen at the moment.

And in this article;

On the official forums, community manager Tim Smith explained that the scale of the expansion adds some more wrinkles for VR, so Frontier's had to reassess the feature, meaning that you won't be going off and exploring new worlds and getting into shootouts in virtual reality right away.

So all discussion is that there won't be VR at launch of Odyssey and very strong suggestions they are working on improving it to their satisfaction so it can be included in Odyssey in the future.

They've been very careful with statements about Odyssey VR which to me suggests it might never be fully implemented. So I really don't see any indication they're working on VR, all I see is a reluctance to implement bad VR.

To me it looks like they're setting the VR community up for a: "We tried but couldn't get VR up to a level we considered release worthy so on foot game play in going to be 2D only."

As for motion controllers, imagine the salt if someone got pwned but a dual pistol wielding VR player firing from the hip in two directions at the same time.

They've said they'll do their level best to implement a good vr experience rather than a bad one. Why alter their credo now? Seems to me their adept at half code n sloppy releases bugs unfixed like multiplay and the old skool networking were forced to play in. Why all of a sudden are they so concerned about fab vr when they clearly can't get their house in order.
I for one will play regardless. But 1000s of vr players won't. They'll just move onto nms or some other mmo.

At least make the legs VR transition in 3D, even if it is not full 6DoF. Large screen in the headset with 3D depth would be an easy compromise until they can go full VR. I’d be thrilled with that using the HOTAS for now.

How can you believe someone who has played in VR can go back to ancient 2d, I'll keep my cash till they make Odyssey VR, there are plenty of on foot shooter games out there, why bother with ED.
ED was great because it was very early into VR, Odyssey is a retrograde step and it is letting down all it's VR supporters.
