Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

Overall thoughts – The new map definitely takes some getting used to, and I feel we've lost some information in favour for a more stylized map.

Specific Issues – The system to map routes seems pointlessly tedious and complicated, having to enter a system map, galaxy map, then a planetary map just to find a settlement you need to go to for a mission.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – I would like a quick-map option to directly plot a route for my mission, where it marks the settlement I need to go to and plots a route there - not the system, not the planet - the actual settlement.

EDIT: changed to use the proposed feedback layout

This should be the job of a professional consultant that studies the game and comes up with a report but taking advantage of the players that love the game is cheaper so here:

Overall thoughts – Need to hire proper UI/UX employees that actually play the game casually so they can put themselves on the user seat.
Specific Issues – Repetitive/redundant actions/interactions. Cyclic action flow that hasn't been optimized
Suggested Fixes for the Issues – If an "action list" when interacting contains only 1 option, dont make the "user select the interaction", "show the action list" (which shows 1 option) and then "make the user select that action". Just do the action after pressing the interaction button; there is only 1 option so there is no need to go through 3 interactions when 1 interaction also gives the same result.

Overall thoughts
I do like the new UI, but it currently takes a lot more inputs to achieve the same results in the previous UI. It would massively benefit from keybinds to avoid having to move the mouse. I know we can use the arrow keys to generically move between all the buttons, but there are now too many buttons in the galmap for this to be efficient.

Specific Issues:
1.
System Map is not showing the full population number of a system. Instead of something like 11,333,333 that would display in the Horizons System Map, it displays 11.3 million.
2. Mousing over a system/body does not show any information of a system in the galmap/sysmap by default. This means to get any information we'll have to click to select it and then click one topic to get information.
3. The updated galmap/sysmap lacks keybinds to move around the buttons. This ends up requiring a lot of mouse movement and clicking, which is inefficient.
4. Plotting a route to bookmarks of locations in a system, or plotting from a station search on the galmap aren't working. When you arrive in the system you won't have the location selected by default.
5. More search options. We can search not only systems, but also stations, but it would be awesome if we could do much more...

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
1. Display the full population number in the system map, like it used to in Horizons.
2. Have the galmap/sysmap remember if you had any of the right side data buttons selected (Nothing selected, "System Information", "Market Information" or "Powerplay Data"). Include a hotkey that can be mapped to switch between these.
3. Give us lots of keybinds to speed up our button navigation in the galmap/sysmap. The UI already divides the buttons in categories, so all we need is ideally one keymap to easily navigate between the potential selections. For example, a key that changes the selection from "Bookmarks", "Your Fleet", "Your Active Missions", or none of them selected.
4. Plotting from non-system bookmarks or non-system search results should auto-select the location upon arrival in the system, like it does in Horizons.
5. There are many things that we could search and have the closest results displayed. While they will display in the 3D map, having the search show us would be immensely efficient. For example, type "Int" in the galmap search. It would display a potential "Interstellar Factors" result. Selecting would then enable this galmap filter, and also show a list of the nearest stations that you know of, so you quickly select from here instead of eyeballing and searching on the 3d map. Basically this would accept any of the options currently avaialble in the map modes or user data view modes - so you could do this with a commodity, a faction state, or pretty much anything so that you get a quick return of the closest results.

"We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not."
Statements like that will not make people happy. It sounds incredibly tone-deaf and out of touch.

I started playing Elite back in '85 on an Apple //e. It's come a long ways since then.

The new Odyssey UI is cumbersome and requires way too many clicks and mouse movements to traverse plus all the submenus just make it confusing. They don't flow together the icons keep changing or disappearing so there is no way to know how to get info. For example, the system map icon disappears instead of greying out. If its not usable, grey it out so we know that its there but unusable at that point in time.

The Horizons UI is simple and fast to negotiate. There was a lot of love and thought put into its design and it shows with its simplicity and flow.

The Horizons UI is magnitudes of times better than the Odyssey UI. In fact, Odyssey is not even close nor will it ever be close with the design of multiple submenus, confusing icons and multiple steps required to do simple things that can be done with the Horizons UI in just a keypress or two.

The Odyssey UI looks great, don't get me wrong. But it falls flat on its face as far as functionality and QOL improvements. It takes more time, mouse movements and clicks to do simple things.

Another problem that Odyssey UI has is that the screens no longer show needed information. As people have pointed out information is missing on the galaxy and system maps. This information was heavily used, why did it disappear? The mission board has issues with missing information also. There are those of us that play the BGS. Now when you pick up missions it no longer tells you what secondary faction is going to benefit when you complete the mission. That information is present in the Horizons missions, its missing in Odyssey missions. I don't want to take a mission and find out at the end that I've just helped the faction I'm struggling against in another one of my systems and just spread the pain to another area. In Horizons you can see who the secondary faction is and decline the mission, now, you don't know who it will help.

My suggestion is this, implement the Horizons UI into Odyssey and you will be on the road to fixing your issues. Totally remove the Odyssey UI, its clunky and definitely not well thought out.

Galaxy map:
1- Go back to purple engineer icon colour.
2- When you filter by size by population, you need to activate it every time you enter the GalMap. In old map that was permanently active.
3- When you scroll through the GalMap menus, you also zoom in/out on the background map
4- More clear and easier way to delete a marker. Just select the target and add a "Delete Marker" button as it was.
5- It would be cool if we could group up markers with tags and activate/deactivate by group and assign different colours, so we can sort them out by our own understanding. Example: I want farm system/planets to be green, or intersting exploring places to be blue, or whatever. And also grouped so I can toggle on and off the entire exploring or farming group if I'm not exploring or farming.

Big GG's with the new GalMap, it was needed, the old random popups were annoying, the clicking on a system and the cursor going somewhere else 100ly away was so tilting. This is one of the best upgrades of Odyssey.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.
I'm really glad to hear that. Like I said on another post. It does look nice. But it is just takes so many clicks to do the same tasks.

Also I have been wanting to grind ranks with the federation. However they are broken in Horizons.

My biggest gripes with the new UI are the following.

No exit button on the galaxy map. (Back button doesn't snap you back to flying but to the left nav panel.)
On the SLF deployment panel I have no idea which fighter is which at a glance. Adding the loadout name next to the fighter name would go a long way.
The shipyard's extra details doesn't actually give us a list of all the modules equipped on the ship. This makes finding things we store on them a near impossibility without going into each one.

Two quick thoughts:
  • Please combine all information about a system or a planet back into one panel, rather than sometimes being split between two now.
  • It would be great if a preference could be set to always come up in a certain mode. For example, when I go to the system map and click a planet, I always want to see the information, and it would be great if I didn't have to click the icon for that every time.

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)
Some things I like, but overall it's just more action for the same thing
Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)
-Cannot plot a route to a station from the bookmark (target the system instead)
-Bookmark category can't be changed
-Can't bookmark a ground planetary outpost directly
-the "info" panel for station/system is off by default.
-lots of icons everywhere. Make it harder to see what's what and pinpoint where you want to click. Some stuff are used all the time and should be easier to spot (like system view)
-icons are worst than text. I need to remember what's the icon do. I can read and immediately know.
-can't edit the UI. I have tools I never used and would like to remove to alleviate the clutter, but I can't (like the trade tool)
Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues
-Target the station and not the system when plotting a route to a bookmarked station
-ability to manage bookmark category by ourself. Extra point for adding the ability to rename, create and delete categories
-have the map "remember" what panel we had on and off, so we can keep the info panel always on if we so desire
-Ability to edit the icons and tools (IE remove or add)
-Option for big UI vs compact (now : compact, big : text next to the icon, Example : (icon) System view)
-ability to favorite the most used tool, or being added by default (like system view). Have them in a way that make them easier to see and use (above the system itself as in horizon for example).

recommend scrapping the incomplete station and outfitting menus and returning them to the Horizons version while the Galaxy and System map issues are addressed

a use case study of the system map was performed -- this was the finding

recommend examining Use Cases such as the one chosen and streamlining the UI for doing them specifically... a good example of the 3 click rule can be found in the Horizons UI

also please take full advantage of the hover function which seems to have been completely abandoned with this new UI, we should be able to see the following details about a body on hover
  • distance
  • type (rocky, icy, unexplored, etc
  • terraformable or not
  • mapped or not
  • signal types (bio, geo, human, etc) if any
  • bookmarks
  • option to plot / select the body
i don't mind the HOLD to plot feature... but it should complement rather than perturb other use cases for that selection.

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)
UI - Horizons UI was good/clean enough and provides more information with less clicks;

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)
0. SRV driving... please, very much please... bring Horizons SRV handling/driving back together with mountains and canyons!!!
1. Fleet Carrier UI softlocks if opened whist entering doking bay or clicked too fast;
2. System map no longer displays your status (WANTED) whilst pausing mouse over a station/settlement/etc as it does in Horizons;
3. Galaxy map no longer shows online friend's location (which system) as Horizons did;
4. System map information is now spread accross lots of icons you have to ckick once Horizon's show them all in 3 tabs;
5. The single new feature in galaxy map that is worth keeping is the search bar on top with "auto-complete". All the rest was better in Horizons;
6. Same for Stations UI... just revert back to Horizons. it worked and was good enough;
7. Outfitting UI for stored modules no longer distinguishes modules stored in another station/system... you don't know its location until you ask to equip it;
8. Flashlight/Energy wheel "deadzone" cannot be adjusted/changed;
9. Game contrast is just in excess... too dark overall and gamma correction is not enough to bring balance to it;

10. Most important of all - Get us a social area (bar) to our Fleet Carriers!!

That's it for starters...
Cheers!

Overall thoughts - someone designed this who doesnt play the game very much. Very inefficent on placement of icons. Worst is setting course.

Specific issues on Galaxy Map
1) Setting a course in the new Galaxy Map is awful .... 11 or 12 button presses plus typing in the system name. Target System should be at the top of the right hand side at the very least, as should be the most frequently used. In the Alpha we were able to press and hold UI Select once the system had been navigated to, but that does not seem to work now. Why? So instead you have to UI_right, then 5 UI_Down presses .... hardly efficient is it?

2) The list of systems matching your search dont guarantee that a system matching the full set of characters you have typed will actually show as the first search result ... example is Tir ... I get a bookmark for Tira Flirble (inherited from the Eurybia bookmark for Liz Ryder) and then get Tir. Others i have asked it shows up in 2nd or 3rd place. It seems to favour 1) bookmarks i have been to starting with the search characters 2) systems i have been to starting with the search characters 3) bookmarks i havent been to starting with the seach characters, 4) systems i havent been to starting with the search characters. Not very useful or consistent.

3) Also noticed if you have set a destination a couple of hundred jumps away, the interface seems to freeze the next time you come in to try to plot an alternate route.

On the UI:

Overall thoughts – aesthetically it is nice, but there are so many extra layers to do routine things, it is tedious. same for galaxy/system map.

a couple of specific things that have bugged me
  • in the galaxy map, it doesn't seem possible to target a system without canceling your route. I like the hold-to-plot-route option, that's an improvement. but i often like to keep a route while occasionally deviating from it to check out one nearby system.
  • in the galaxy map, some of the UI just doesn't work the way it should, it's like an annoying website, where you get a dropdown menu, but to select an item out of the menu you have to move the mouse, but when you move the mouse the menu disappears. The commodities dropdown menu is like this: you have to select each component one at a time (metals / silver / selling), because each time you select a component the menu vanishes, and you have to go bring it up again.
  • In the system menu, why is planetary information divided across two different tabs? Why not list atmospheric composition etc on the same panel as atmospheric pressure?
  • Need some hover-over information in both,. In the galaxy map I want to be able to hover over a star and see quickly the stellar types in that system. Instead, I have to click on each. So much more work, so much slower, just to search for interesting systems to visit. In the system map, hovering over a body should automatically make its basic characteristics (type / atmosphere / gravity / landable / etc etc) show up in a fixed window.
  • Colors are underused. Should be able to use a few diferent colors to distinguish some alternatives, but it seems like 95% of everything is orange.
  • Different color issue: it's much harder than before to distinguish the colors of stars in filter modes. Could be the whole color-space-is-wrong issue.
Something I like is the POI button that brings up a list of installations, including ground stations, dividing them into categories. Those could be hard to navigate in the old interface.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

  • For issue 1, just make it so that targeting and routing are different functions that can coexist. I want to be able to target without canceling a route.
  • For the UI issue above, the menus should stay on unless canceled (e.g. with right mouse click). And when a tab can have more information on it, put more there, don't divide across multiple sites.
  • There should be a panel, like the left-side panel in Horizons, with contents updating based on the simple position of the cursor in the map, as in Horizons. No clicks necessary.
  • Colors, use more colors. There's so much information in these maps, it can only help to distinguish some of it by colors.

Overall thoughts – A step forward, specially the search bar.

Specific Issues
  • Search bar: "exact match" or "only match" should move to the match (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33446)
  • Plotting a course to your bookmarks requires a lot more actions
  • Interface buttons on both sides requires moving your attention / focus
  • probably a bug: selecting a planetary settlement and plotting a course only plots to the star, not the settlement
  • bookmarks split up into categories will not match the expectations of each playstyle
  • if I hold a target which is not centered, the map moves

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  • Search bar: move to the match if there is only one match, or if it is the exact match
  • faster bookmark course -- add the feature of the old boomarks, have the actions pop up there (see below)
  • interface buttons: various possibilities 1) make a group (like filters / info / action) and automatically expand them to the left once the cursor is over them and retract them once out of focus of this group 2) my preferred solution: have action buttons pop up near the star for those items which make sense there (like in the old UI for selecting or plotting)
  • allow to create folders in bookmarks and let users create their own categegories instead of coming up with your own (they are good, maybe add them as a bookmark filter)
  • if I hold a button to plot a route to a target, do not move the map (only when I click it)
Generic suggestion: optimize for navigation speed if you know were you want to go. To take the "search + one match" as an example: you search for something which has one match or an exact match:
  • when it matches a star: card moves to the star, UI is put on the action to plot a course there, other useful actions next to it
  • when it matches a planetary settlement and you have the corresponding map: switch to the planetary view, settlement selected, UI is put on the action to plot a course there, other useful actions next to it
  • as in the item above, but no map: the same just on a level above which is valid (e.g. star selected in galmap if no system map is available)

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

Edit: please use the edoperformance@elitedangerous.com mailbox to report optmisation issues in Odyssey rather than the Issue Tracker.
Pay us for our Beta testing work in ARX please.

I find it a bit fiddly that I have to click the star on the galaxy map and then find and click the icon to see the system map. Wouldn't it be easier to keep zooming in till it switches to system map, in the same way on the system map you can zoom in to a planetary body? Likewise, if you keep zooming out from the system map brings you to the galaxy map centered on the same star.
I just feel it would be more intuitive.

Really pleased we've got a chance to give some more directed feedback and thank you for making this post - I think in some aspects there was simply far too much to take in from the Alpha feedback and not enough time to process everything, let alone implement it.

Summary
I love the idea and I don't think it's completely borked but it needs refining; it feels, like most UI's now, that is was designed for touch screens and chunky fingers with little mouse and keyboard consideration; larger buttons / text and separated by more clicks than is sometimes needed. There are some missing key targetting features in the System Map too. (The "touch-screen approach" is also the major issue with Outfitting so a lot of this applies to that too)

Galaxy Map
  • Searching Systems - When pasting complete system names into search, pressing enter should act like clicking the top system.
  • Removed Cycle feature - When pressing enter on search text when multiple systems are found, it should cycle through them as it did in Horizons.
  • Inconsistent behaviour with results drop down - When Clicking on a searched for system, the drop down doesn't always close when it should (behaviour isn't consistent and I often need to 'click off' the search box)
  • If possible, show a small Permit Required icon on search drop-down alongside the System icon when permit controlled
  • The hollow white selected circle doesn't line up until you are zoomed into and centered with the selected system; this makes it difficult to use when zoomed out.
  • Removing Bookmarks - When selecting an already bookmarked system, allow us to remove the bookmark using the same icon (currently you have to go to manage bookmarks)
  • Scrolling Issues - Using the mouse wheel to scroll the systems info tab on the right will also cause map zoom to change with the scroll, they need to be focus controlled
  • (Think this may just be a bug) The map seems to like defaulting to User Data view instead of Realistic mode or last used
  • Text and Icon Size too large - Reduce the size of the System information text and show extra info - it would be nice to see info such as factions present, conflicts etc. Others have brilliant suggestions here
  • Tabs can't be pinned - The left and right panels close when clicking onto the map anywhere - when browsing this just adds extra steps to return to where you were, maybe add this as an option where the panels will remain open until its icon is clicked again
  • Online friend names missing - The map shows where my friends are but doesn't show who they are, we need a simple list of friendly cmdr's in the system as we did in Horizons.
  • If possible, make the shown Waypoint system at the bottom a clickable link to target / focus that system.
  • Can only filter by one criteria at a time - Allow us to select multiple system filters in the Map Mode tab - currently we can only see either Extraction systems or Anarchy (as a random example), would be nice to have all filters applied for more refined searches.

System Map
  • As above, white selected circle often doesn't line up
  • Click and hold behaviour feels odd (sometimes I have to release the click then click it again for the hold to register) - If possible, toggle between double-click and / or click and hold to select
  • Information is divided into too many tabs on the right, combine the Description and Planetary Overview tabs at the very least.
  • Very limited FC info - would be nice to see Owner name, squad / docking access etc in the Overview tab
  • Could be easier fining settlements for the kill faction X member missions - Given the missions available; would like to request a method to see what settlements a certain faction owns if not too difficult or sort / group the POI list by Faction owner. Browsing through can be tedious when there are a lot of settlements in the system.. maybe include this on the Factions tab.
  • Too many tabs - Maybe show system information as a fixed set of data at the top of each tab on the left, make the text and images smaller and combine the factions and powerplay tabs.
  • Browsing then selecting POI's to visit is uncomfortable - POI's can't be selected / targetted from the tab and should be, making them harder to find after changing views / alt-tabbing.
  • Related to above, clicking on a POI only shows the planet it's on and does not zoom in any further; you need to then zoom into the plant, re-open the POI's menu, find where you where, hope you click the right settlement so it doesn't wander off to a different planet just to get to that view. Repeating that for other settlements on the same planet is cumbersome. Would suggest auto-zoom when single-pressing a POI (i.e. an Odyssey settlement) from the tab and target selected POI with click and hold (or double-click) method.
  • Can't set POI's as target destinations - we should be able to target it without having to first find it on the planet surface view.

Edit: Applies to both, Key-Binds! If possible, as many binding options for the various map operations (such as target selected, show bookmarks etc) as feasible.

Not really a strict UI issue but it would amazing to have a way to target any point on a planet surface, not just a POI or activity if we could get that on the cards anytime in the future.

The Positives
  • It's clear that effort has genuinely been made to bring us some improvements and features with the maps and I think are onto the right track - this isn't overlooked or unappreciated.
  • Having some additional controls such as copying the system name and focussing the selected system are a welcome improvement and for me, make it much easier to 'explore' in the system map.
  • The System Search is a big improvement and I think nearly there, I like being able to see a list of matching systems without having to browse to each one.
  • Bookmark management - a major improvement and one place I welcome the division of types.
  • POI's are at least easier to get to and interact with in the system map - need more of that.

seriously... we paid extra to Alpha test, and it is worse than it was in Alpha. There are simply too many faults at so many levels that make a continuous and fluid game impossible (having to relog to clear completed missions, graphics being all over the place in quality, lags, crashes, invisible rocks, floors one can fall through, atmospheres and planets now looking worse than they did in alpha, the list is endless, plus the fact that the servers are obviously straining. I really want to like this much-needed update to the game, but it is painful at times, to even try to enjoy.... 90% of current missions now available are 22000 ly away, nearly all central systems are suddenly at peace to even the sub-par FPS that is ground combat is not easy to find (one suspects a deliberate choice somewhere to do this to limit the number of people using frontline solutions). I am generally very affable and ok with bugs, but this is beyond the threshold of what is acceptable, also, ARX still set to 400 a week, and all the new shiny suits and stuff is priced so that people will pay even more money to obtain a few skins. sort it out.
Yours Liraziel (raliel... etc)
