Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

Overall thoughts – I can see the potential of the new UI for Galaxy/System map. For me, part of the problem will be the learning curve. The other part is that somethings appear to be broken.

Specific Issues:
  • Bookmarks - Breaking them down into categories of System bookmarks, station bookmarks, planetary base bookmarks - Good idea.
  • Bookmarks - Regardless of the type, plotting a course to a bookmark just plots to the the system only!!! I bookmark stations, not systems, so I can plot a jump to said station in that system in one click!

Suggested Fixes for the Issues:
  • Are the bookmarks "working as intended" with the system only course plotting or is this a bug? If it s a bug, fix it. If it is "working as intended", please re-vist your intentions as the category breakdown is of little use then.
  • Could this be an issue with legacy bookmarks? As in, do we need to recreate the bookmarks in Odyssey for full course plotting to work?

I have far more issues with the Ship Outfitting and Shipyard UIs, but this thread isn't supposed to be about that yet.

Off the top of my head, from a ~week's worth of use, here's a few thoughts:
  1. System map: After DSS-ing a planet, please make the heat map and ring hotspot data available as a layer in the system map. Also allow us to set targets at multiple locations on the surface to visit. (Consider hunting biological signals that don't have overlapping locations, can set targets for each, and go visit each one in whatever order we want.) Ensure our current location is also shown on the body (when opened on the surface).
  2. Both: When plotting a route/setting a target via click+hold on something, don't centre it in the view until AFTER the click+hold action is done. It's unintuitive/jarring for the thing to run away when you mouse down on it.
  3. Both: Easier bookmark removal (when looking at an existing bookmark).
  4. Galmap: Support hitting Enter to search, and if there's a single match, automatically go to it. (It's completely unnecessary to have to also click on the sole search result in the droplist).
  5. System map: Show counts of biological, geological, planetary POIs and ring hotspots (once known), and indicate terraformable worlds on the system map (a floating bubble near each body), not buried in a hover or menu. This would allow a much more intuitive overview of the system features.
  6. System map: Feature request/QOL improvement: in-system, multi-stop route plotter. Pick worlds/stations/signals from nav panel to visit (ie. terraformable or valuable worlds, things with bio/geo signals, NSPs, or stations/settlements, etc), then plot me an efficient route based on current orrery state which minimizes the back and forth within the system (which often happens by naively picking the next nearest thing at each stop), but also helps me keep track of what I've visited. Auto-advance target after an Approach Body or supercruise drop event has triggered on the current target body/signal.

I like the new UI because I no longer have to zoom in and out to avoid the information panels while clicking on a new target. I don't like the amount of clicking it takes to get the information I'm looking for. Aside from the obvious need for automatic replotting of routes, I find that when I am looking for information about planets, like whether they are terraformable or not, and if they have geological or biological signals, I have to click through two different menus to get the information I need. I'm not opposed to the idea of distinguishing planetary description and planetary details, but I would prefer that the system map itself contained the important information that most commanders will be looking for, at a glance; we can afterward click for more details. What I mean is, in the same way that the system map shows a blue bubble to indicate an atmosphere, and a blue circumference to indicate landability, similarly I would like indicators of terraformability, presence of geological signals, and presence of biological signals, and any other pertinent information at a glance. Perhaps a line or bracket indicating the "habitable zone" would be helpful. Maybe color coding would help here as well.

Reposting what I already said about the UI.

While loving the look of the new UI there are quite a few things that got pretty tedious.
Personally I play most of the game with a HOTAS that has quite a lot of buttons, X56, and some of the changes downgrade ease of use, mainly because there are additional movements and clicks to be made.

I also miss something in the space mission panels, like where is the filter that shows the Legal missions only and how do we distinct Bounty Missions or are they gone?
Actually playing Horizon atm. since I can't find these in Odyssey.

Additional note to the developers, in the future please test such major design changes in ships while exclusively using a HOTAS (X52/X56/Warthog and alike) which allows one to do pretty much everything without ever touching keyboard and mouse.
You might have added space legs, but ships are still a major part of the game, besides that it must be a real pain now for those that use VR.
That simple!

System Map Issue:
If you are setup to use the mouse wheel to zoom in / out in the system and orrery map, then if you bring up the factions list popup and start scrolling through it using the mouse wheel, it also zooms the system map in / out at the same time.

  • In the System map, selecting Points of Interest on the left is useful. But then selecting a planetary settlement only selects the planet. We then have to select the actual settlement again. This should auto select the settlement (as it does for stations).

Galaxy Map
  • It is not that intuitive to use, too may options to click through though (e.g. right panel)
  • Map Mode (and others) - have a toggle 'All On/Off' button so we can quickly do that
  • Bookmarks - others have made the points I echo, but hold to select seems broken e.g. to select my fleet carrier bookmark, I can't seem to plot a route directly to it. Also the ability to quickly delete a bookmark is missing.
System Map
  • Too slow to draw/render planets. This should be much faster, don't know why it's so slow but should just be using a graphic overlay and not actually rendering the 3D planet in full, which I wonder whether it's doing
  • Bindings Issue - Quitting the system map causes my controller bindings to change, requiring me to unplug and plug back in the controller to 'reset' them. This NEVER happened in Horizons, but happens 75% of the time in Odyssey. The only time it doesn't seem to happen is if I am careful/slow in using/quitting the system map.
Overall, with improvement they could both be made to function well using the new design.

in the latest update, I've noticed an improvement in the double gamma bug where the ui isn't too dark to use and most planets that were white washed aren't any longer.

i can move my gamma back to normal.

it still looks like there is little to no cockpit lighting

fps around empty planets seems unchanged. the shaders that do the surface seem to need much more optimization love.

ultraforcapture the only mode that seemed to give us the odyssey that was marketed is still unusably slow and not dependable in function. on some airless world's in resulted in much worse looking surface features than ultra. this sometimes happened on atmo too. seems to occur more often when actually landed vs approach.

ultra gives a barren world that isn't very pretty but still manages to cripple high end graphics cards. it really shouldn't do that for what we are getting here.

the star light delay when high jumping seems gone. so it doesn't look like someone turned it on like a switch

steps in the right direction. didn't test much else though

This is Galaxy Map related and is more of a suggestion to bring a UI feature over to the galaxy map from the system map.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues:

I love that while in the system map, you can keep zooming into a planet to automatically switch to the planetary view.

It would be awesome if this same mechanic worked to get to the system map from the galaxy map.

It's easy to click the system map in the new right bar with a mouse, but with a controller, you have to click the system, then move right, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, click.

Selecting a planet and zooming and then having it switch automatically would be a great time saver. It would also create a seamless transition between the three map modes with a controller or other non-mouse and keyboard setups.

This could be a real help when it comes to console.

I think most of the issues right now are with the bookmarks system. This game relies in bookmarks a lot and they should be given a lot of priority.
  • We should be able to bookmark any coordinates in a planet, and share them with squadron and teams.
  • Names for bookmarks shouldn't be truncated in the list, and offer longer names
  • And why can't we edit the name of a bookmark the moment we add them? We have to go to a specific tab to do so. It is very inconvenient.
  • Bookmarks are distributed in category tabs but the way they are distributed is strange. Let us create our own categories and arrange them as we like.
  • It is incredibly hard to select a solar system with the controller. I have to use the mouse most of the time. So playing while sitting on my coach is impossible. Before I was playing (sometimes) in my coach with a bluetooth keyboard. Now I also need the mouse beside me.
  • After 1.1 all my controls were reset (controller). This was VERY infuriating.
No other complaints. I don't find the new outfitting menus any problematic, they are mostly okay. Whoever is complaining I simply don't understand where is the problem. The only thing I would change is reduce the size to show more information in the screen. The new interface has very big elements and I play at a 2560 x 1440 p. screen and still the elements of the menus are too large. Too much space wasted.

I know you put consoles in mind when creating the menus, but even for the new consoles, interface elements are still too large.

Edit: somewhat unrelated:
  • Can we have Camera Suite presets saved (camera position, zoom etc)?

Overall thoughts: The galaxy and system map could use some UX improvements, but the ship outfitting ui/ux is in far worse conditions

Galaxy Map - Why two clicks to get any info on system?
Outfitting - When clicking on mounted module there is no option to replace it from storage only to buy new one. WHY???

The item wheel:

1/ when the mouse input is on, please let the mouse wheel cycle through the choices.
2/ Can we adjust mouse sensitivity to movement, as its a bit slow (i.e too large movement to move the cursor)
3/ I know you won't like hardcoding, but a keypress to open the wheel plus then press 1-8 for each action would be a lot faster.

With some use I'd also like to add:
Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)
  • Points of interest in system map can be pretty useful, but as with many other elements it's slightly lacking in information and function.
  • You can't plot direct from the selection, you have to wait for the map to focus on an object and if it's a settlement you have to go to the body level and continue selecting down before you can plot a route to one.
  • To see what type of economy/settlement it is you have to go to the body, get to the settlement you want, then click the information panel.
  • Separately, regarding galaxy map, in Horizons it was very easy to see who from your friends list is in a system when they're online/in the same game mode. Now I don't know if that information can be accessed from Galaxy map at all.
Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues
  • Add buttons to each POI on the left hand selection to give options:
  • Plot route direct.
  • Focus direct (go straight to the settlement on planet view, not to the planet and leave it to the player to continue hunting)
  • Toggle information, so the player can access that level of detail to know what type of settlement it is without having to move the mouse back and forth accross the screen (could intoggle toggle to have this to default open up on focus/selection also)
  • Revisit Horizons to see how friends in system is displayed in Galaxy map and find some way to retain that information, preferably without gating it behind extra layers of clicks so it can be readily apparent to players that want that information.

Overall thoughts
I like the changes. The look is comfortable and fairly intuitive.

Specific Issues
  • Galaxy Map States are bugged - once you find a "War" system, everything shows as in War
  • Map mode "State" drop down bugged - unable to select every option, those off screen unselect automatically
  • System Mode - Post scan, I can see the number of Biological "Signals" but I've not found a way of seeing how many I've found without landing and scanning them again.
Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  • Replicate and fix bugs :)
  • On the Body Information Screen add a "(x scanned)" after the number of biological signals?

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

Edit: please use the edoperformance@elitedangerous.com mailbox to report optmisation issues in Odyssey rather than the Issue Tracker.
Hi Bruce,

tl;dr: can get 35 FPS in a low end machine and reproduce low 15FPS when using shared video RAM due to PCI-E bottleneck (look for BUS usage in MSI afterburner or similar GPU monitor and shared GPU memory usage in Task Manager)

I'm running the game on this old machine:
AMD FX-8370
32GB DDR3-1333MHz
Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z (PCI-E 2.0)
GeForce GTX1650/4GB

The game settings are 2560x1080 borderless, quality high with modified Texture, shadow, and environment quality set to low and blur turned off.

I can get 25-35fps out of it if I am careful with the quality settings mentioned above, and the game loads every asset to my 4GB VRAM:
Given the low specs on the machine, I am quite happy with it as it is, though if I could get some more FPS it would be nice of course.

Now, if I change any setting that increases the ammount of video memory used by the game to use the video shared memory (VRAM + RAM), then the PCI-E BUS usage peaks up and the FPS tanks to 10-15 FPS:

This is further impacted by my machine running a PCI-E 2.0 which does not have the bandwidth of more recent machines.

Texture quality, shadow quality seem to have a larger impact on this for now.

What is interesting is that whenever the shared video memory is used, the VRAM usage decreases, and that persists even if I revert the quality settings - need to reboot the game in order to get rid of the shared video memory allocation, otherwise my PCI-E BUS is hammered silly and the game FPS is always bottlenecked by it.

Of course that depending on the assets loaded by the game, even low settings might not be enough, specially if loading a lot of assets, as some surface on-foot sites I get some BUS usage and then the FPS drops.

Now this is just speculation as I do not have the hardware to test it, though I have seen some similar issues in other software and higher spec machines (https://github.com/microsoft/tensorflow-directml/issues/45), where even a 8GB VRAM GPU was allocating some shared video memory and degrading the performance, and as this memory allocation is managed by DirectX, it could be a similar issue occuring in higer spec machines running ED-O.

Hope it helps,
o7
