Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

UI
Specific Issues:
  • The Manage Bookmarks dialog is modal and makes the main galaxy map icons unselectable while it is in use. In particular, the exit button for the galaxy map is still visible but does nothing, and the exit button for manage bookmarks is in a different location.
  • Bookmarks in the main galaxy map give no feedback as to their name, making them much less useful.
  • Changing between on foot, SRV, SLF and main ship in the crotch panel is laborious.
  • It can be annoying to find the right hotspot in the SRV to board it when on foot.
  • DSS can only be accessed above a certain height in supercruise.
  • The equipped tool of weapon resets between excursions on foot.
  • The top part of the on-foot UI takes a long time to boot up and display its information, in particular the distance from previously collected samples. IT's quicker to try to take a sample than wait to see if you're the proper distance away.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues:
  • Modal dialogs should remove inactive UI elements from windows behind them.
  • Buttons that appear in multiple dialogs, such as 'exit' should be in exactly the same on-screen position in every dialog they appear in.
  • Bookmarks on the main galaxy map should have a tooltip with their name (and probably 'rename', and 'delete' as options).
  • Allow specific keybindings for things like 'disembark/board', 'deploy/board with SRV', 'launch SLF' so they can be done with a single keypress.
  • Enlarge the hotspot for boarding the SRV so it's easier to find, and put the notification in the top right as for the ship instead of just the call-out from the SRV itself.
  • Integrate the DSS info with the body view on the system map, so filters can be changed or inspected anywhere.
  • Remember the last too9l/weapon selection between excursions on foot
  • Alter the on-foot top display boot-up so sampling distance is visible sooner, or better still have some kind of additional UI element that says whether you are far enough away or not, even when in the SRV.

UI Overall Thoughts:

Almost every function in Elite Dangerous has been made less informative, less accessible, and less functional. Exceptionally common tasks now take much more input to achieve.

Specific issues:

Galaxy map:

  • Bookmarks to bodies in systems are virtually useless. The bookmark will only select the system. It then requires 11 button presses, a loading screen, and manually selecting the bookmarked body to plot a route to it. This almost completely defeats the object of having the bookmark. This used to take 2-3 button presses and was available instantly from the galaxy map. Fix this by allowing press and hold on a bookmark to plot a route to that bookmark.
  • The system map is the fourth from bottom on the list of options on a star. All the Odyssey gameplay is in the system map. It should be at the top of the list. Order the list in the order of likelihood a player is going to want to use the function.
  • The population size filter forgets its state every time the map is closed. Make it not do that. I turned it on because I wanted it on. I'll turn it off again when I no longer want it.
  • The system states filter can't even select all states. It could before. Make it do so again.
  • When using the map with a pad putting the camera into vertical movement makes the rest of the UI inaccessible, instantly cancelling any other screen.

Outfitting:

  • Unable to see modifications applied to an item in storage. There's room to display that information on the screen, do so.
  • Can't fit items from storage from the ship loadout screen. Whyever not? It tells you you have them in storage but you need to back out and go to a different screen to do anything with that information.
  • Ship Loadout should be the default top option in outfitting. I went to outfitting to work on the ship I'm in.
Shipyard:

  • A list of my ships is displayed at the side of the front screen, but doing anything with them requires selecting "manage your ships". A different less informative UI element which only functions to allow me to interact with a thing I can see on the front screen but not interact with. These functions could be trivially combined.
  • In the list of ships in Manage Ships it shows whether a ship has engineered or guardian modules fitted, but not what they are without getting into it.
Powerplay:
  • Collecting merits is even more unspeakable than ever, becuase now after collecting a quota the powerplay contact closes, and after paying to skip the wait for the next quota the cursor forgets what was selected because the screen reloads. Fix this by just dynamically charging 10000 credits for every merit over quota the player picks up.

I would love to see select all/select none buttons on the list menus instead of the bizarre hold mouse button down and drag along all the selection boxes

As an update to my #225 post :

The System Map POI section, the one on the left bar that is listing the Bodies, Stations, Ports and Settlements should offer more info
If you want to see info regardind a station, one has to select the station then press Info on the right bar or Features to see the facilities offered. 2 different windows, 2 different buttons.
The Info part (at least), offering information like economy, faction, etc - should pop automatically when clicking the station

The same should happen for planetary ports, The info panel for settlement should pop automatically OR that information should be concentrated in the same tile present in the POI list
Currently to get the info panel for planetary ports one need to zoom in every planet then select the settlement / port then press info.

Another UI change/bug:

If the next system in a plotted route would not be normally displayed in the navigation panel in Supercruise because it's too far away, it is no longer present at all. It used to be at the bottom of the list. It still is if it's either the current target or you are in realspace, but it's missing in Supercruise.

Hi Frontier/Bruce,

I'm not sure if this has been discussed in the previous 25 pages of this thread, but I have 2 big UI gripes other than the navigation and outfitting screens (which enopugh people have probably complained about):

1. Why on earth has the HUD model of stations been de-synced from the actual stations!? It used to be fairly handy to use the HUD model to orientate yourself in line with the mailslot of a station while still in hyperspace, now, it's impossible.

2. shipyard / switching ships menu - Why did you take away all the information!? It used to be, that you could see how your ship was kitted out before getting into it (and which stats were better/worse than the ship you were in), now all we get is a name, landing pad size......and for absolutely no reason, as it had literally no value, a counter of how many modules have been engineered....

Given the current state of Odyssey, you have made ED considerably worse, and then made us pay you for it.

I just got a new suit that was better than my previous suit, but the UI wouldn't let me just go into my "Fightin' suit" loadout and swap them - I had to delete the loadout entirely and make a new one with the better one I just bought, which undid all my cosmetic settings.

Being able to swap a suit in a loadout for another suit of the same type (eg. swapping out a G1 Dominator for the G3 Dominator you just lucked out on finding at PS) without losing the livery would be ideal.
edit: or at least the ability to copy cosmetic setup from one item to another

Overall thoughts.
I really like the new galaxy map and system map, I also liked the old system.

Specific Issues.
None at the moment.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues.
Since some people like the new icon based system and galaxy maps, while others prefer the older system, why not have a checkbox in settings and choose your preferred method. I do not know how difficult that would be from a coding perspective, but I though it might be worth mentioning.

PS I agree with what Pitvrug was getting at 2 posts above, about the switching ships missing info. I really miss that info.

I would like it to be added to the HUD of the life bar, the selected grenade, and that not only the icon appears on the weapon.
It has been very difficult to know which grenade is selected when disarming or changing weapons.

I have a quick suggestion can we include star port services. In the lounge terminal menu to pick up all the mission's and crew and change ship ect.

Overall thoughts
The UI was clearly designed for touch screens, this however doesn't work too well with controllers, HOTAS, keyboard and mouse.

Specific Issues
  • too many clicks are required to get things done
  • a lot of information is spread out in various multiple popup windows
  • a lot of information is missing
  • no more mouse over popups
  • buttons: we do have symbols now everywhere instead of text describing what does what
  • loading time of system map is extremly slow
+ a lot of other things

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
- remove this new UI entirely and bring back the Horizon UI. The Horizon UI was 100 times better.

Feedback to FDev... and I haven't read all 25 pages, so apologies in advance if this has already been said (many times I'm guessing)...

In the Horizons System Map, I used to be able to review the stats/features of all planets just by moving the mouse over the planets. No clicking required.
In the Odyssey System Map, I now have to make 4 mouse clicks and 2 large mouse movements for each planet in the system to get the same/similar information.

I feel it's a huge step backward on the UX. The old way was fast, simple, efficient, intuitive.

As an example, here is the workflow for flying to nearby system to retrieve my battle ship, then returning to fight in a CZ:

Enter galaxy map - Confronted by lots of symbols
Click bookmarks
Click what looks like a little picture of a station
Click bookmark for desired station
Taken to system
Click desired system on main map
Find an icon that looks like a system view
Zoom about and click on station
Click on set route
Back to main galaxy menu to bookmark current location
Can't find search so zoom about to find system by eye
Click system (eventually)
Click system view
Click station
Select 'set bookmark'
Back to bookmarks on LHS menu
Can't find bookmark
Give up and load horizons

To top it all there aren't any CZ in the system even though its in a war state, and it crashed to desktop twice and once to main menu.

Solution: revert back to how it was previously. Even though it had issues it was significantly more streamlined, stable and user friendly than this version.

Good day,
I think it could be a great enrichment if you could add a filter to the galaxy map that shows already discovered systems and still undiscovered systems. Especially for explorers, this would be a real relief! (I know that there is already a similar function, but unfortunately it only refers to the systems that one has not yet discovered oneself and not to completely undiscovered systems).
It would make life easier for me personally and also for other explorers and could lead to a new "gold rush", as we could then all see which systems near the bubble and surrounding area are still unexplored.
It is simply tiring to jump from one system to the next until you find an undiscovered system.
I think it would also fit the lore of the game, since there is only one provider on all stations who buys the map data (Universial Cartographics). Logically, this provider owns all the maps and is more interested in obtaining maps of unexplored systems than just updates of existing ones.

I would really like to see this!!!! And many others too. It would make exploration much more exciting and enjoyable.

P.S.: The system name copy function has been a good idea :)

Overall thoughts – I like the updated new look of the UI, the old one did need a overhaul, there is a lot of truncated text present which ruins its overall presentation *1920 x 1080 resolution. Some issues with information lacking.

Specific Issues

1* To much truncated text - its everywhere.
2* The ability to select a destination using your bookmarks - this one's a must please.
3* Need to know what is installed on a ship from the shipyard and what engineering is present on that ship

Suggested Fixes for the Issues

1* Font sizes scale - or scroll, or simply reduce how much is 'said'.
2* Possibly just 'Hold' on a bookmark to select its destination - this would also work better for settlement and station targeting bookmarks.
3* Use a part of the screen to show this information when you request it.

The inability to just plot a route to a bookmark from the galaxy map is the biggest killer.

I used to be able to just pick Liz Ryder from the galmap menu in one click and have a route plotted to her base in the second.

Now, I have to select the bookmark. It shows me Eurybia. I have to click it (not merely move the cursor over it as before) to display the option for the system map. Then I have to go into the system map. I then have to find and click the planet. Then I have to click the button to switch to the planetary view. Then I have to find the base on the planetary map. And then, finally, I can plot a route.
Then I have to hit the back button like four times to get back to the game.
