odyssey or not?

The part of the video you mention talks about what inspired the phrase spoken by Neil Armstrong when he set foot on the Moon. Then the difficulties of dealing with the 'superstar' status he acquired on his return to Earth and his regrets at not being able to spend the time he would have liked with his family because of his work.
Nowhere do they talk about what the phrase "Armstrong moment" means to Neil Armstrong. Not even that his first step on the Moon was the greatest moment of his life (but even without saying so explicitly, i'm pretty sure it was).
You missed it utterly.
I would guess you aren't a parent, His greatest moment would have been the birth of his daughter. His regret is not spending time with her while she was alive.
That you think his greatest moment was stepping off a ladder speaks volumes. That was important to the people who worked towards that moment.
Another member of the Apollo missions (8 if I remember correctly) spoke of all the effort of getting out to the Moon, then looking back and realising that everything he actually cared about was on the blue sphere on the Horizon.

I wasn't going to name it because I thought it would be clear enough... but okay. I was referring to No Man's Sky. There is a certain part (and, again, ex-part) of the community that regards this as be be-all-end-all best space game ever (I might exaggerate for effect). Yet it has alot of similar blunders to ED yet gets none of the flak Odyssey gets for it. The fade to black transition is only one example; yes, it has this silly little "getting up" animation when you disembark, but personally I found that even more annoying.
Well... i just can give a personnal opinion. And it's just i don't care about this game. It could die that it would touch one of mine without making the other move.
This is not the case with ED. I want FDev to shut my big mouth.

Getting out of the ship isn't the "act of landing".
There does not seem to be a separate word (disembarkation maybe ?). But yeah, the act of landing is pretty good (even if the graphic quality have been lowered since the launch).

Not so spectacular, and unimportant in comparison for me; way overblown criticism in my opinion.
It's not only about how it's important. Making a predifined animation with the game engine should be pretty trivial. And FDev didn't even bother to make this small effort.

why should FDEV waste a lot of time developing something
Euh... we're talking about some predifined animations using the engine. At worst, that may require to modelise a small airlock for ships. If it's such an issue for FDev, i don't see what we can hope for the futur of the game.

that will be viewed maybe a couple of times by 99.9999% of players and then never looked at again
If 0.0001% of players base would represent 1 player, this means that 1,000,000 copies of the game would have been sold. Pretty good success thanks to this landing animation :)

then never looked at again when they could put this effort into something players will actually use
Because it's not always the most used feature that sells ? The on-foot feature in EDO is a great exemple. Widely used but far from bringing the sales one might have hoped for.

with the example of the ship power up procedure as a demonstration of this behaviour, how many times have you done that process? 1 times, 0 times? Honest answer please. That exists as an optional activity, do you ever do it? Now that was wasted dev time, why wouldn't this also be wasted dev time?
2-3 times. But there are some areas of improvement that could be made to make it much more incentive to activate or even useful. Like giving the possibility to skip the procedure (like a rogue key that validates all procedures at the same time and faster) or to cancel the take-off request. Or to be able to do the procedure while the lift is going up. In short, the problem is not the procedure itself, it's that the way FDev has implemented it is really not great. So i would say that FDev should spend a bit more time on the power up procedure to make it not annoying, better and usefull.
On the other hand, i don't think removing the lift animation would be that popular (i mean just replacing the animation with a fade, like for disembarkation). But i think a lot of players would like to be able to skip it by pressing a key.

No, just that i'm not an english speaker.

Thx for the explanation, much appreciate 🙏

Ok. So, @Rat Catcher, absolutely no relation to what "Armstrong moment" may means. I don't understand why you have said so.

I for one wish that I could fade to black and then be directly in the concourse, or even that I could take on foot station missions without leaving my chair..

So, the Armstrong moment is actually... having a child?
How do you do that in Elite?!
As the Astronaut from Apollo 8 said; He looked at the Earth and realised all he cared about was there.
Armstrong's regret was not spending time with his daughter, throwing himself into his work and not spending time with his wife after their daughter died.
Apollo 11 wasn't Armstrong's first trip on a rocket, it was his last. Any money he looked up saw the blue planet, made the same realisation and decided to quit the space program in that moment..

That's a pretty fair break-down of on-foot CZ in the overall (y)
Also I highly recommend you to try CZ in PvP against another Cmdr. It's really where it shines and the NPCs become much more of a danger ;)

I have, my big issue with fighting players in CZ, is the best PVP weapons are the lasers, because People have a lot more mobility at their disposal so the hitscan is invaluable, it's simply better to use all your Aphelion ammo to get a kill, rather than waste all your L6 or Intimidator for nothing. But that basically means you go twin lasers and maybe the Karma pistol. My PVP loadout is a Scoped long range Headshot Aphelion and a High Cap auto-reload Eclipse. Very deadly combo in PVP and it is fun, but it also means the profitability of CZ takes a nose dive because you spend basically all your time hunting the other player, rather than racking up kills.

Hmm, glad you are game designer and know how easy it is to do things, otherwise we might never know. FYI things are rarely as easy as non-game designers think they are and the number of times I have heard that expression here "it would be so easy" is amazing.

Oh great to hear that you also went PvP, not that many people have been there, hehe 🏅
Very interesting loadout, double lasers + kinetic. I never thought of trying this, but I'll definitely do. I agree, imo, laser + kinetics are the best weapons to kill a Cmdr.
But what I love the most with CZ is that you must adapt your strategy to win, it's not just dogfighting. I guess if I would face a laser+kinetic Cmdr, I would try to avoid dogfights and try to hide my position as much as possible (so much covers in those maps).
Welcome to visit our discord and play with us (in my sig). o7!

EDO is more stable that it's ever been but I still occasionally get crashes.

Sometimes items are missing for crash site missions and/or goods are buried under ground.

Still get occasional glitches to terminal mission screen where there's just a '+' given and doesn't show materials or reward - really irks me!

For some reason sometimes in a concourse the sound starts to get choppy and I get lots of stuttering. A game restart appears to fix things.

I much prefer the planets (without atmospheres, of course) in EDH - much nicer terrain, much smoother. Sun rises and sunsets on atmospheric planets are something else to behold though.

It's a shame that it's taken a 1.5 years to get to this state.

My biggest problem is the separation they went for between ED and EDO - i.e. enabling people without ships to be able to play. Made me feel like they chose to forget about the pilots needs and tried to bring in a new player base. Not sure it worked, really.

Disclaimer: I still play EDH and EDO and will continue to while it's supported. Just really hope that they pull some new tricks out the bag and make up for what's been done so far.

PS @Ryox those are awesome PVP videos!

I was still getting the occaisional crash in H before O was released, I would say the number of crashes is about the same now as I was getting in H, mainly because they can probably be attributed to the same source which was essentially unchanged between H and O.
